Message
PJ has officially become a city on 20th June, 2006! In case anyone is wondering why the date of this
momentous event was not conveniently fixed at the end or beginning of the month, well, look again. The
date makes better sense if you were to write it in numbers, like so – 20-06-2006!
On the economic front, it is getting really difficult for developers and contractors to do business these days.
In addition to the plethora of new regulations, rules and laws to comply with, the spectre of inflation and
escalating costs of building materials has reared its ugly head again. Purchasers’ sentiments of late are also
somewhat dampened, and the lacklustre local stock market has not helped. In the midst of this somewhat
gloomy scenario, however, there is at least some sunshine, in the form of our 5%-6% GDP growth for 2006,
which, according to published official numbers, is still on track at the half-way mark.
Moving to sports, Geoff Ogilvy was the surprise beneficiary of last-minute blunders by leaders Phil
Michelson and Colin Montgomerie in the recent US Open. Ogilvy was already in the clubhouse, resigned to
his 2nd or 3rd placing, until the unthinkable happened. It is indeed true that the ball is round, and it ain’t
over till it’s over! As for the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament, at the time of writing, the field has been
whittled down to the last 16. Will it be Brazil, Argentina, England, Germany or a dark horse that will lift the
coveted trophy this time around? Just ask any bleary-eyed and sleep-deprived fan, and you will hear no end
to his arguments as to why his favourite team will win, even as he struggles to keep his eyes open!
Some good news. Work on the road widening at the Sony junction, at the bridge over the NKVE and at the
ramp leading to the bridge, has finally re-commenced. Hopefully, this time, the work can be completed
smoothly. Closer home, we were told that the contract for the widening of the underpass at Persiaran
Tropicana to a dual-carriageway has been awarded, and once approvals from the highway authorities have
been obtained by MBPJ, the tunnelling work can commence.
For fitness enthusiasts, the construction of a whole new cardio extension to our gym, with a great view
of the pool, will be completed by August – so no more waiting for your turn at the treadmills during peak
hours.
In this issue, our ongoing articles on Tropicana’s more prominent residents will feature the affable and
likeable Mr Ho Kay Tat and his family. Kay Tat is the Group Managing Director / Group Editor-In-Chief of
Nexnews Berhad, The Edge Communications Sdn Bhd and The Sun. Read about what he has to say about
his family and his philosophy.

The many sides of a ‘wordy’ and happy
What are dreams? What are aspirations? What are determination
and fortitude? Simple English words to highlight the persistence
of the human mind in achieving a goal. For many, hurdles and
obstacles become a factor in pursuing their dreams but to this perky
gentleman, it was a whole different ballgame.
Mr Ho Kay Tat, a 47 year old gentleman had a vision, and saw
his dream through, and today, rests in the serene tranquillity of
Tropicana Golf and Country Resort, where he enjoys his glass of
wine at his porch after the rain, rekindling those days of struggle to
get where he is today.
It all began years back when he saw a future in journalism, a passion
that is only found in certain people. Joining the New Strait Times
group, Mr Ho had no idea what life would have in store for him in
the future.
For 6 whole years he was reporting extensively on political issues
and daily events around the country. It’s never easy, a journalist’s
life. Running around, interviewing people and burning the midnight
oil just to meet deadlines was necessary, so that the society would
have their daily news on their front lawn in the mornings.
In 1990, he took a step further by joining the Kuala Lumpur bureau
of Reuters, just as Malaysia’s economic boom was starting to take
place, covering issues of economics, corporate events, as well as
news on the money market. Years later, he joined the Singapore
Business Times where he was given his own column, a dream come
true for Mr Ho, or any journalist for the matter. Writing issues on the
Malaysian Business Scene was indeed a cry for joy for this young
journalist on the making.

life at Tropicana!
Principles of life…
1996 was the year that changed his life completely. Mr Ho accepted an
offer with Nexnews Berhad as Editor-in-Chief, the publishing company
for The Edge and The Sun Newspapers. It was indeed intriguing, to
hold such a respected and responsible position with one of Malaysia’s
widely read newspapers. Scary though, but yet physically possible, as
said by this intellectual being, “one should be good at what he or she
does, by working hard to achieve your goals with the right attitude.
Believing in what you do and to do it with honesty and integrity
would definitely accelerate one to limitless opportunities as trust is
very important in the media business”.
Determination and persistence…
Struggle was a definite when he took on this responsibility to build
The Edge into a respected must read publication for the business
and corporate community was indeed a milestone. When they began
12 years back, no one gave them a chance to shine, however, with
determination, they carried on knowing that they believed in the
publication and delivered a publication that the market needed and
wanted, and success came eventually.
Similarly, his struggle continues with The Sun at the moment, by
turning it into a free newspaper. Many people including so-called
media experts discouraged this move and predicted that they
would not last more than a year. This was very sad to Mr Ho and all at
Nexnews Berhad, however, it has already been four years and The Sun
circulates 230,000 copies a day and has a very wide following because
of its great content as well as the “telling it as it is” commentaries.
People look forward to this section of the newspapers as they yearn
for the truth. Giving people the truth is necessary according to Mr Ho,
that is why talented people are necessary for the industry and more
importantly, they must have the passion for what they do. Integrity is
of course central because readers have to trust what is reported and
said.
Life at serenity…
Having reached his goal, aside the struggle and hurdles that needed
to be crossed in his career path, Mr Ho also provides for a lovely
wife, Tan Puay Lin and his young and energetic daughters, Ho Ching
Ling, Ho Su Yuen and Ho Su Ling. He chose Tropicana Golf & Country
Resort as a living ground for his family as he believes that security is
necessary in case of an emergency. Being a gated township, Tropicana
was his first choice. Furthermore, having a golf course at literally the
foot of his doorstep added to his decision, as he is indeed a golf
enthusiast.
His beautiful home was decorated by his wife and him, has to be seen
for one to appreciate. Its cosy decorations include a reading hall that
is piled with books, magazines and of course, his newspapers. The hall
overlooks a well-maintained garden that includes a waterfall, with
water sounds that soothe the mind and relax the nerves. The other
side of his living hall is filled with a collection of golf balls and caps,
another of his passions.
Mr Ho also speaks proudly of his wife’s talents. Most of the walls in
their lovely home are decorated with water-colour paintings made
by his counterpart. She enjoys painting and most of her inspirations
are from old buildings and groups of people as she originates from
Penang.
The Tropicana Experience…
Aside from their welcoming home, where Mr Ho and his family enjoy
spending most of their free time, they also enjoy the facilities at the
club. The golf course is his cup of tea, although it is difficult to get
much free time to make it a regular occurrence, having to assure good
publications are out daily. However, his wife and kids do make use of
the Olympic-sized swimming pools, the well-equipped library and of
course the numerous eateries at the clubhouse. What better place to
live in than one that has everything, under one huge roof.
Being the passionate man that he is, he believes that “life should be
lived to the fullest” as everyone only lives once. Keep an open mind
and attitude and you will be able to achieve what you believe. Live
and let live, however do not try to impose your beliefs on others and
do not hurt others. Exclusive words of wisdom from this honoured
individual.
To all inspiring journalists out there, may this article on such an
extraordinary man, be your inspiration to a life filled with determination
and goals, where success is just a step ahead.
It was indeed a joy to meet the man in his home and sanctuary at
Tropicana.
