rocznie na rynek pracy naszego województwa wchodzi
ponad 40 tys. absolwentów szkół wyższych. Ma to wpływ na
zmianę oblicza tego regionu, w którym ciągle dominuje przemysł
ciężki. Zlokalizowanych jest tutaj 38 czynnych kopalń węgla
kamiennego, 25 hut i zakładów hutniczych, 43 elektrownie
i elektrociepłownie. Zmiany, związane z restrukturyzacją gospodarki
spowodowały już, że szybciej rozwijają się tu nowoczesne,
przyszłościowe gałęzie, jak elektronika i przemysł samochodowy.
w te zmiany wpisują się również śląskie uczelnie.
Poziom wykształcenia mieszkańców Górnego śląska przedstawia
się niekorzystnie na tle innych zurbanizowanych województw,
ale to skutek olbrzymich zaniedbań minionych dekad.
Dyplomem studiów wyższych legitymuje się 9,2% mieszkańców
regionu – to o 1 punkt procentowy mniej od średniej krajowej.
Optymistyczne jest jednak, że w stosunku do 1988 r. liczba osób
kończących studia wyższe zwiększyła się znacznie. Podobnie jak
w całym kraju, kobiety w woj. śląskim są lepiej wykształcone
i częściej niż mężczyźni kończą studia wyższe (9,2% kobiet i 8,6%
mężczyzn).
Gdy 40 lat temu powstawał Uniwersytet śląski z filii Uniwersytetu
Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie, żałowano mu miejsca. teraz
stoją przed nim otworem okazałe budynki nie tylko w Katowicach,
ale także w sąsiednim Sosnowcu, Chorzowie, Jastrzębiu
i rybniku. Na Uniwersytecie śląskim na 41. kierunkach studiuje
39,3 tys. osób.
Politechnika śląska, która szczyci się 60-letnią historią, kształci
obecnie 32 tys. studentów. Jej absolwenci i pracownicy zajmują

Annually, over 40 000 tertiary graduates enter the job market
in Silesia. this has an enormous effect on the transformation
of the region, in which heavy industry continues to dominate
– with 38 working coalmines, 25 steelworks and smelting
plants and 43 heat and power stations. Changes with regards to
economic restructuring have resulted in progressive industries
as well as those looking towards future needs such as electronics
and the car industry, developing most rapidly. these changes
have also affected Silesia’s educational instutitions.
the education level of the population of Upper Silesian does
not fare well in terms of other highly urbanised regions in Poland.
this, however, is a direct result of decades of neglect. 9,2%
of Silesia’s inhabitants have completed tertiary education – 1%
less than the national average. Optimistic is the fact that in relation
to 1988, the number of people completing tertiary education
has risen dramatically. Similarly to the rest of the Poland,
Silesian women are better educated and are more likely to gain
a tertiary education (9,2% women, 8,6% men).
when the Silesian University was established 40 years ago
as a branch of the Jagellonian University in Kraków, authorities
weren’t overly interested in offering the university buildings in
Katowice. today, authorities not only in Katowice, but also in
neighbouring Sosnowiec, Chorzów, Jastrzebie and rybnik are
only too happy to offer their buildings for the university’s use.
Currently, 39 300 students are enrolled in 41 faculties at the
Silesian university.
established 60 years ago, the Silesian University of technology,
has a current student population of 32 000. Its graduates
and staff hold key positions within the Polish economy and
politics. the university’s main campus is in Gliwice, where 9 out
of its 12 faculties are located, along with the university administration
buildings. the Organisation and Management Department
is in Zabrze, and the Materials engineering and Metallurgy
Department as well as the Transport Deparment are housed in
Katowice.
the engineering education Centre is in rybnik, as is the Organisation
and Management Department which, founded here in
1999, also conducts integrational studies for the disabled at the
rehabilitation Centre in repty. Postgraduate diplomas have begun
at the Central and eastern european Civil Aviation Personnel
Training Centre as part of the Silesian university of Technology.
this Centre is the University’s answer to the continually growing
need of specialist aviation personnel. the Silesian University of
