I visit Silesia several times a year, on business. From a fellow
businessman, I found out about Altus, in the very heart of Katowice,
right near the Spodek entertainment Centre. Since then,
I always stay there as it offers everything I need: the best hotel
in Katowice, fantastic restaurants, a casino, exclusive boutiques
– and all this in the tallest building in southern Poland.
Generally catch a taxi from the airport straight to Altus, but
you can also get there by express bus. towering over the city,
you can’t miss it. In the taxi, I look forward to a drink at Sky-
Bar – reputedly the highest pub in Poland. At over 100m above
the ground, it’s amazing. the view from the 29th floor offers
up an undisturbed panorama of upper Silesia – not the industrial,
dirty, smoke-choked Silesia of old, but views of the green,
developing agglomeration with lush forests and the best roads in
the country.
Opening the door to my hotel room, I know I couldn’t have
chosen a better place. everyone who’s anyone stays at the
five-star Qubus Hotel Prestige – Genesis, Metallica (apparently
they spent a loooot of time in the casino), Pearl Jam, as well as
the world’s best volleyballers in Katowice for the world Volleyball
League finals, and boxing greats: tomasz Adamek, Andrzej
Gołota and the famous boxing promoter – Don King.
even if I have errands to run in the city, I come back to Altus
for meals. It’s only two minutes walk from the main square, and
there’s so much to choose from. I’m a great fan of the salmon
dumpling salad from the Japanese restaurant and the gilt-head
bream baked with spinach, porcini mushrooms and crab meat,
from the mediterranean menu. the cafes are great, as is the
wine bar and I’ve already mentioned Sky-Bar. there’s also a Fitness
Club and beauty salons on site. And the shopping mall. My
wife spends many hours perusing the exclusive clothes stores
and boutiques. She says that since she’s already there, she may
as well make the most of it...there are also several banks and
parking for 560 cars.
I can often be found in the Atrium, particularly when feel
I want to ‘feed the soul.’ the photographic gallery featuring the
best Silesian artists is stunning. I’ve also heard that on special
days such as International women’s day, Childrens’ Day or
Valentine’s Day, Altus organises special events featuring wellknown
and admired celebrities – such as Maciej Kuroń, Grażyna
Brodzińska and the band “Feel”. that’s why I always tell my
friends visiting this region, which is so rich in possibilities, to stay
at Altus – it’s impossible to be bored.
Altus is the new Silesian benchmark for quality. Due to its
prestige and versatility, it’s the region’s business centre. Many of
the largest companies have made Altus their headquarters and
thanks to its contemporary and progressive style, it’s Katowice’s
showpiece. that’s why I recommend it everyone visiting this
opportunity-rich region.
