KnoBlAucHHAus
The oldest house in the Nikolaiviertel and one of
the few preserved middle-class homes from 18th
century Berlin presents life in the Biedermeier period
by example of the Knoblauch family. On the
second floor there are changing exhibitions on the
cultural history of the 19th century on display.

The Writer and the Salesman
In 1807 Heinrich von Kleist took up residence
in a guest house on Poststraße, not far from the
Knoblauchhaus. Jan Mende, curator of the current
exhibition in the Ephraim-Palais, explains, with
reference to one of Kleist’s letters, the relationship
between the travelling writer and the housemaster
at that time, the silk ribbon factory owner Carl
Friedrich Knoblauch.
