58 2 DeutscHe GuGGenHeIm Long Night of the Museums in the Deutsche Guggenheim, photograph: Nina Strasgutl Principally focusing on modern and contemporary art, the Deutsche Guggenheim hosts four major international exhibitions each year; among them are Deutsche Bank’s »Artist of the Year« and pieces commissioned specially according to the gallery space. exhibition Once upon a Time: Fantastic narratives in Contemporary Video Video artists explore the rich tradition of fables, myths and fairy tales, examining their role in the modern media age. Artworks by Francis Alÿs, Cao Fei, Pierre Huyghe, Aleksandra Mir, Mika Rottenberg and Janaina Tschäpe are on display. from 6.00 pm Short guided tour (in German) through the exhibition 7.00 � 8.00 � 9.00 pm Story-telling (in German) Fairy Tales through Time and Space Once upon a time… the artist Sabine Kolbe tells fairy tales and stories in the Deutsche Bank courtyard. 7.00–12.00 pm � hourly Guided tour (in German) through the Deutsche Bank Collection (please bring ID) Food & drink in the Deutsche Guggenheim Café in the courtyard 2 + DeutscHeR Dom German Cathedral at Gendarmenmarkt Though the English title of cathedral is misleading, the church in Gendarmenmarkt nevertheless has an important history – it was here that the victims of the 1848 March Revolution were famously laid out. Today it houses an exhibition by the German Parliament on parliamentary history. Permanent exhibition Paths – Wrong Turns – Detours: the Development of Parliamentary Democracy in Germany. The exhibition across several floors portrays the historical development of Parliamentarism and of political parties in the 19th and 20th centruries. 60 7 DeutscHes BlInDen-museum The museum dedicated to the blind has a collection of over 1000 exhibits including various aids for the blind, books, photos and paintings. Permanent exhibition Six Right! Louis Braille and Embossed Printing In 1825 the young Frenchman Louis Braille invented the six-dot system and opened the door for blind people to participate in education, careers and culture. This simple and ingenious writing system spread around the world, made the leap into the computer age and, in spite of modern speech programmes, is still used in the current day. Activity Visitors can experience the development of Hands reading. © Blindenhilfswerk Berlin e.V. The first suitable Braille script machine: Hall Braille Writer, USA 1892. © Deutsches Blinden-Museum Berlin various writing systems leading up to the Braille six-dot script and the different areas of use for the script. They can write their own Braille and try out different aids that improve the daily lives of blind people. In cooperation with the Blindenhilfswerk Berlin e.V. (Blind Relief Organisation, based at 15 Rothenburgstraße, about 100m from the Deutschen Blinden-Museum), visitors have the opportunity to experience the Garten der Sinne (Garden of the Senses), relying on their senses of taste, smell and touch. Refreshments are available from the Dunkelbar (Dark Bar). 3 + 4 DeutscHes cuRRYWuRst museum Cult, original, unique: the Berlin curried sausage now has its own museum, offering an exhibition experience for all the senses. last entry at 1.00 am Permanent exhibition Everything exciting, interesting and mysterious you need to know about the Currywurst. The virtual preparation of Currywursts, a spice rack with smell tests, a sausage sofa to relax on, a ketchup bottle audio station with Currywurst songs and a look backstage at a sausage stand are a few things you can look forward to. The interactive exhibition invites visitors to join in and try things out – including the delicious cuisine on offer.
