Principally focusing on mo<strong>der</strong>n and contemporary<br />

art, the Deutsche Guggenheim hosts four major international<br />

exhibitions each year; among them are<br />

Deutsche Bank’s »Artist of the Year« and pieces<br />

commissioned specially according to the gallery<br />

Once upon a Time: Fantastic narratives in<br />

Contemporary Video<br />

Video artists explore the rich tradition of fables,<br />

myths and fairy tales, examining their role in the<br />

mo<strong>der</strong>n media age. Artworks by Francis Alÿs, Cao<br />

Fei, Pierre Huyghe, Aleksandra Mir, Mika Rottenberg<br />

and Janaina Tschäpe are on display.<br />

German Cathedral at Gendarmenmarkt<br />

Though the English title of cathedral is misleading,<br />

the church in Gendarmenmarkt nevertheless has<br />

an important history – it was here that the victims<br />

of the 1848 March Revolution were famously laid<br />

out. Today it houses an exhibition by the German<br />

Parliament on parliamentary history.<br />

Permanent exhibition<br />

Paths – Wrong Turns – Detours: the Development<br />

of Parliamentary Democracy in Germany.<br />

The exhibition across several floors portrays the<br />

historical development of Parliamentarism and of<br />

political parties in the 19th and 20th centruries.<br />

There are also models of German parliamentary<br />

architecture and a section on the building and<br />

redevelopment of the Deutscher Dom.<br />
