VIVA lA musIcA 

For a long time it was customary when speaking of 

music to mean almost exclusively European classical 

music - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, perhaps also 

Palestrina. Even at the beginning of the 20th century 

– with the dawning of the modern age – music 

from other cultures only entered the picture in the 

context of the highly popular »Völkerschauen« (Ethnic 

Shows). In 1927 came the well-respected exhibition 

»Musik im Leben der Völker« (Music in the Lives of 

Other Peoples), in which Far Eastern, Indian and Persian-Arabic 

musical traditions were introduced for the 

first time – a good place to start... 

This Long Night music – both European and non- 

European – has arrived in the museums. In the collections 

musical instruments, sculptures and pictures 

give a lively impression of the musical life of different 

epochs and cultures; furthermore a multitude 

of musicians are helping to turn the Long Night into 

a unique and vast travelling concert. Over 35 choirs 

are performing through the night (thanks to the Chorverbund 

Berlin for their wonderful cooperation!) and 

many instrumental ensembles, as well as tours and 

readings on diverse musical themes. A certain high 

point will be the midnight sing-along at the the Kulturforum, 

when the Berlin conductor Kerstin Behnke 

will bring thousands of Long Night visitors together 

to create a powerful choir. Yet even with so much 

music it remains the Long Night of the Museums. It 

has the Kulturforum as its event centre this summer, 

where the evening begins with a strike on the beautiful 

Gamelan gong, featured on out poster image, 

and even on its 29th appearance it still has new participating 

venues, the Museum Berggruen and the 

Loxx am Alex. The Deutsche Technikmuseum will 

be participating again after a relatively long break 

and the Humboldt-Box at the Lustgarten enables a 

look into the not-so-distant future of the new rebuilt 

Stadtschloss (City Palace). With so tradition and so 

much to see you’ll be ready to raise your voice as 

the evening comes to a close...

to BeRlIn's 29 tH lonG nIGHt of tHe museums 

Twice a year Berlin’s uniquely diverse musuem 

landscape invites you to a night of exploration… Since 

the Long Night of the Museums was first held in 

1997 almost all of the city’s 200 museums and memorials 

have taken part. Each time the cards are 

reshuffled – new discoveries and a diverse programme 

are guaranteed. This summer 105 museums 

open their doors, amongst them the Museum 

Berggruen, the newly opened Humboldt-Box and 

the LOXX am Alex for the very first time. Tickets are 

also valid for the shuttle bus service, which connects 

the museums on short, convenient journeys.

Valid in all participating venues (from 6pm) and for 

the use of shuttle busses as well as all public 

transport (Berlin zones ABC) between 3pm and 

5am. Price € 15, concessions €10, children up to 

12 years have free entry. Concessions are available 

upon receipt of identification for school or uni- 

versity students, trainees, the unemployed and 

recipients of Hartz IV, those performing German 

military or civil service, pensioners and disabled 

persons. 

Concessionary combi-tickets are not available 

from S-Bahn or BVG ticket machines or online.

for German-speakers and have been given the

mean they are suitable for non-German-speakers.

Routes 

Seven shuttle bus routes all start out and finish at 

the Kulturforum Potsdamer Platz. The routes connect 

around 95 museums, collections and cultural 

institutions. There are eight museums in the direct 

vicinity of the Kulturforum. Visitors can also change 

between the southern route 7 and the S- and 

U-Bahn at the station Rathaus Steglitz.

The theme of the Long Night of the Museums this 

summer is music and over 35 Berlin choirs have 

signed up to perform in different venues across 

the city. We’ve put together a list of special events 

at the Long Night which are suitable for international 

visitors, including some of the many musical 

performances in the programme.

u Altes Museum 

In the atmospheric setting of the Altes Museum 

the Berliner Kantorei choir will be performing Romantic 

motets by Anton Bruckner, Johannes 

Brahms und Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. (p. 30) 

9.00 � 10.30 pm 

u Automobil Forum Unter den Linden 

Besides their exhibition on automobiles and technology, 

the Automobil Forum Unter den Linden 

also presents two up-and-coming alternative 

bands: Tonbandgerät (9 pm), who use with everyday 

objects to complement guitars rhythms, and 

Mega! Mega! (10.30 pm), an upbeat indie band 

with German lyrics. (p. 37)

u Berliner Planetarium 

Under the Planetarium’s night sky projection the 

vocal ensemble Kammerton will be singing pieces 

from the programme »Mond und Sterne« (»Moon 

and Stars«). If you miss them there, the group will 

also be performing in the St. Matthäus-Kirche at 

11.10 pm (p. 42).

u Computerspielemuseum 

The museum’s programme pays tribute to computer 

game soundtracks: from 6 to 10 pm the Erich 

Fried Choir will be singing an a-capella-version of 

the Civilization IV soundtrack every hour; from 10 

pm to 2 am gwEm and Microwave Massacre will be 

reliving the music of 70’s and 80’s video consoles, 

adding their own modern spin. (p. 55)

u Gemäldegalerie 

The Pauls Choir will be performing »O bellezza vitale 

– o bellezza mortale«, a concert of madrigals 

und chansons by Marenzio, Monteverdi, Debussy 

und Ravel – moving from the theatricality of the 

Italian Baroque to the French Impressionist’s reinterpretation 

of Renaissance fantasy. (p. 100)

The Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut presents the 

performance »Trio NeuKlang – lost in tango«, playing

Kunst bibliothek (9 pm, 11 pm). (p. 104)

The first of many concerts in the museum’s programme, 

»Wir Kinder vom Kleistpark« brings together

fire magic show, followed by horse-drawn carriage

On the Long Night the museum offers two English 

guided tours through their permanent exhibition MACHmit! Museum für Kinder 

on German history, as well as a classical musical Labyrinth Kindermuseum 

accompaniment. (p. 62) 

Both of these children’s museums are offering 

workshops for children to make their own musical 

instruments out of various materials. The latter 

also has a final sing-along concert with the new 

instruments at 11 pm. (p. 115/p. 112)

On this Long Night of the Museums visitors are 

not only invited to listen to the numerous tasters 

of Berlin choirs in museums. At midnight on the 

Kulturforum’s piazetta visitors can add their voices 

to the thousands in the Long Night choir (p. 192)! 

The midnight sing-along will be led by the Berlin 

conductor Kerstin Behnke, who took part in the 

mass choir in a Tokyo sumo stadium – bringing 

together 5000 singers for the closing bars of 

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. 

tango 

Visitors to the Kulturforum can look forward to 

variety of Tango performances. After the opening 

ceremony the consortium musicum berlin and die 

Sing-Akademie zu Berlin will be performing the pieces 

»Por una cabeza« and »En los campos en flor« 

by Carlos Gardel, arranged by Reiko Clement. The 

choirs are accompanied by Reiko Clement on the 

bandoneon, Cornelia Hagen on piano and Chloe 

Miller on violoncello. 

Susanne Opitz and Rafael Busch from »Tangotanzenmachtschön« 

will be showing visitors how to 

dance the passionate Tango, with Basak Evran und 

René Löffler from the dance schools »Zappatissimo« 

and »Estudio«. 

From 12.30 am the Tango DJ Jens Stuller will be 

spinning classic und modern Tango tunes. Time to 

get dancing!

Performative installation: 

untitled Act Berlin 2011 

A wall of ice is a metaphor for life; it undergoes 

its own distinct natural transformation in time 

and space. The artist Dolanbay paints the ice wall 

whilst it melts, undertaking an uncertain journey. 

Something comes into being and ceases to be, figurative 

and abstract, conscious and unconscious. 

How long will the wall stand? 

A project by Dolanbay (Meinblau e.V.), produced 

and documented by (Internationales Forschungskolleg 

– Verflechtungen von Theaterkulturen, Freien

From a Different Perspective: the Early Berlin 

Wall 

In 1966 GDR border guards photographed over 

40km of the inner-city wall. The negatives were 

forgotten and only rediscovered in the 90’s by the 

initiators of the exhibition. The 1500 individual 

negatives were digitally pieced together by the 

photographer Arwed Messmer and a text from 

the border guards’ files was added by the author 

Annett Gröschner. 

»From a Different Perspective: the Early Berlin

The museum, housed under the train arches at 

Alexanderplatz, displays the history of motorcycle 

production in the former GDR, including many rare 

models. 

Permanent exhibition 

Time travel through the history of GDR twowheeler 

production 

The largest public exhibition of GDR two-wheelers 

in the world includes more than 140 motorcycles, 

motor scooters and mopeds from the manufacturers 

MZ, Simson und IWL, shown over two floors 

and 800m2. On display are almost all models 

from 40 years of GDR two-wheeler production, as 

well as many trailers, sports and racing motorcycles, 

special-purpose and government vehicles. 


GDR Camping – Leisure and Everyday Life 

Camping was one of the most popular leisure 

activities in the GDR. The special exhibition shows 

camping and leisure scenes, such as a Trabant with 

a camping trailer and awning. Over 500 articles 

are displayed, including many every-day objects 

from the GDR such as cameras, radios, calculators, 

toiletries and toys.

forms a part of an art project by the NGBK Berlin. 

The U-Bahn line 10, which was conceived in early 

20th century and has never been completed, was 

used as the basis for a secret experiment in 1926 

that sought to achieve the deceleration of time, 

inspired by Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. To this 

end an A-I carriage was rebuilt and – complete 

with test passengers – sent off; the train is supposedly 

still travelling through Berlin’s underground 

as a time machine today.

The Karl-Marx-Allee – a street with history, stories

take part in a short walk through Zille’s milieu, 

Wohnzelle Friedrichshain, Neoclassicism, the 

Stalin Memorial, the Workers Uprising and postwar 

town planning, with many personal stories on 

the street. 



What makes the Karl-Marx-Allee so interesting?

German Cathedral at Gendarmenmarkt 

Though the English title of cathedral is misleading, 

the church in Gendarmenmarkt nevertheless has 

an important history – it was here that the victims 

of the 1848 March Revolution were famously laid 

out. Today it houses an exhibition by the German 

Parliament on parliamentary history. 


Paths – Wrong Turns – Detours: the Development 

of Parliamentary Democracy in Germany. 

The exhibition across several floors portrays the 

historical development of Parliamentarism and of 

political parties in the 19th and 20th centruries. 

There are also models of German parliamentary 

architecture and a section on the building and

The museum dedicated to the blind has a collection 

of over 1000 exhibits including various aids 

for the blind, books, photos and paintings. 


Six Right! Louis Braille and Embossed Printing 

In 1825 the young Frenchman Louis Braille invented 

the six-dot system and opened the door for 

blind people to participate in education, careers 

and culture. This simple and ingenious writing 

system spread around the world, made the leap 

into the computer age and, in spite of modern 

speech programmes, is still used in the current 

day.

now has its own museum, offering an exhibition

kleist: Crisis and Experiment 

The exhibition presents the writer Heinrich von 

Kleist – both his works and an eventful life of 

crises and catastrophes. For the Long Night the 

focus is on the Berliner Abendblätter (Berlin 

Evening Papers), published from October 1810 

to March 1811. Kleist’s newspaper was exciting, 

innovative and initially very successful.

researches and exhibits GDR design from 

1949 to 1989. 


40 years down the drain 

In the listed building of the former Karl Marx 

Bookshop formDDR presents mainly industrially 

manufactured products, from furniture and 

household items to a whole range of toys. Both 

accepted design classics and little-known designs 

are on display. The exhibition contradicts the 

stereotype of GDR design as inferior, drab or dull, 

presenting a wealth of artistic qualities.

The Order’s headquarters is the centre of the 

brotherhood in Germany and not usually open to 

the public. It houses an exhibition covering the rituals 

and customs of the brotherhood. 


The temporary exhibition covers the development 

of the Freemasons since 1770, with a particular 

focus on the influence of music. The displays include 

historical documents, records, pictures and 

other information on Prussian kings and famous 

Freemasons.

The only hemp museum in Germany explores the 

diverse uses of the plant and its significance for 

different cultures across the world. 


The exhibition addresses cannibus genus from 

various perspectives: its biological properties; growing, 

harvesting and processing through history; its various 

uses; its ritual significance in cultures across the 

world and legal status as a narcotic. 


Hemp in the Music of Various Cultures 

The exhibition presents musical genres and styles 

which are influenced by cannibus or its criminalisation. 

Reggae is a Carribean example of the 

sacral influence of marijuana on music; Greek 

Rembetiko is much less well known, although it is 

a European music style; many jazz songs centre 

on the criminalisation of cannibus.

Curtain The display was conceived more as a 

large joint installation than a classic exhibition, 

bringing together new paintings by Goerlich and 

murals by Gutsche specially developed for and 

integrated into the gallery’s spaces. In Goerlich’s 

works themes such as the origin and application 

of power and violence play a significant role as 

well as an engagement with colour, whilst Gutsche 

uses black and white lino prints to convey the 

abysses of the human psyche hidden under the 

surface and behind the façade.

used as an exhibition space for modern art, which 

is integrated into the unique building.

This year the house is celebrating the 125th birthday 

of Ludwig Mies van der Rohes. The garden 

installation »A Star for Mies« by Udo Dagenbach 

builds on the design principles of Mies von der 

Rohe’s Revolution Memorial of 1926, which stood 

in the cemetery at Friedrichsfelde, Berlin, until its 

destruction by the National Socialists in 1935. The 

staggered, overlapping cubes serve as planting 

beds, covered in red-bladed grass and roses (Mies 

was particularly fond of light-coloured roses).

simplicity and massive presence, made only more 

intense by the scent from the raw material, creates

Brassaï Brassaï. In the Studio and on the Street 

The Museum Berggruen and the Sammlung 

Scharf-Gerstenberg (directly opposite) host an 

unusual double exhibition from the Nationalgalerie 

with works by the Hungarian photographer 

Brassaï (1899–1984). Alongside his fellow countrymen 

André Kertész and Henri Cartier-Bresson, 

Brassaï was one of the three Greats of the 1930s 

French photography scene. In the Museum Berggruen 

Brassaï’s portraits and studio photographs 

lead us into the world of his artist friends Picasso 

and Matisse, Giacometti and Braque. They portray 

paintings and sculptures have a strange life 

of their own in the studios and which are today on 

display in the Museum Berggruen.

Between Film and Art: Storyboards from 

Hitchcock to Spielberg 

The Museum für Film und Fernsehen and the 

Kunsthalle Emden show impressive cinematic 

storyboards, each one characterised by individual 

artistic handwriting. The storyboards are 

juxtaposed with not only the relevant original 

film sequences, but also with the works of fine art 

which are referenced in the storyboard’s aesthetics 

or conception.

The museum’s collection stores 30 million objects, 

from fossils and preserved animal specimens to 

minerals and over 4.5 billion-year-old meteorites. 

A particular highlight is the world’s largest dinosaur 

displayed in a museum. The recent reopening 

of the East Wing also made a large research collection 

of formaldehyde-preserved specimens accessible

The Pankow district museum holds exhibitions on 

the history of the former school it is based in, the 

Jewish school on Rykestraße and life in Prenzlauer 

Berg in the years 1949–1990. It also holds special 

exhibitions on selected topics of the district’s his - 

tory. 


The White Line – Wall and Escape in Berlin’s 

north East 

A white line, drawn on the paving by border 

police, was the first visible sign of the division of 

Berlin. The construction of the Berlin Wall sealed 

this division for the next 28 years. The history of 

the Wall’s construction and escape attempts along 

the former sector border are depicted in eleven 

sections.

motorised plane airfield in Germany, Johannisthal, 

and the every-day reality of the Berlin Wall between 

Treptow and Neukölln.

Cause to celebrate: in 2011 the Treptow Museum 

turns 20 

On the Long Night the exhibition sections ‘Teltow 

Canal’, »Treptow Industry« and ‘The Berlin Wall 

between Treptow and Neukölln’ will be official 

opened. These complete the museum’s permanent 

exhibition. The exhibition section on the Berlin Wall 

was developed with support from the Federal Foundation 

for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship. 

A central exhibit is the model of the Berlin Wall 

along the Bouchéstraße, which, similar to Bernauer 

Straße, was once the border between the two social 

systems. A book on the theme, published in association 

with the exhibition, will also be available on 

the evening for visitors to buy.

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg displays masterpieces 

by the Surrealists and their predecessors, 

covering a spectrum from Piranesi, Goya and 

Redon to Dalí, Magritte, Max Ernst and Dubuffet. 


Brassaï Brassaï. Im Atelier und auf der Straße 

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg and the Museum 

Berggruen (directly opposite) host an unusual 

double exhibition from the Nationalgalerie with 

works by the Hungarian photographer Brassaï 

(1899–1984). Alongside his fellow countrymen 

André Kertész and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï 

was one of the three greats of the 1930s French 

photography scene. 

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg’s focus on 

Surrealism casts a look at the dark and unworldly 

»other side« (Kubin); here Brassaï »Graffiti« pho- 

tographs are displayed – pictures given life by the 

anonymous scratched images on walls and buildings. 

Like prehistoric cave paintings they appear 

as messengers of far-off worlds, which at the same 

time touch the deepest layers of our own lives.

Originally dating from 1706, the palace has preserved 

the rich decor of the late 19th century, offering 

visitors an insight into the living culture of this

Sisi – Empress Elisabeth of Austria: Myth and 

Truth 

The exhibition sheds light on unknown facets of 

the Empress’s life, which was characterised by her 

protest against the rigid ceremony and protocol of 

the court and devotion to her personal interests – 

primarily the cult of beauty.

Built at the end of the 17th century for Prussia’s 

first Queen, Sophie Charlotte, the Baroque palace 

is the largest of the former Hohenzollern family residences 

in Berlin. Surrounded by impressive gardens, 

the palace offers a varied perspective into the 

history of courtly culture in Prussian Brandenburg.

The banqueting halls and living quarters of Frederick 

the Great and his successors in the new Wing 

Whereas the White Hall and the Golden Gallery

God, the world, the Devil, man, woman and crow.

eight large-scale works and an altarpiece, in part 

developed specially for the exhibition. The intense 

yellow colour of the altarpiece ‘Mistral,’ created in 

1991 in the south of France, creates a meditative 

atmosphere.

crimes committed during the Nazi period. Central 

themes include forced vasectomies in the former 

Wittenau sanatoria, the role of the clinic in the

disabled children in the Wiesengrund pediatric 

department.

The Willy-Brandt-Haus, the party headquarters of 

the SPD, houses an extensive collection of Class- 

ical Modernist and contemporary art. There are 

also special exhibitions on a regular basis on various 

themes, in particular photography.

(Transitions) based in the SEZ, the Willy-Brandt- 

Haus and the galerie son. 

Since 2008 the painter Johannes Heisig has 

worked from his memories and visions of the 

divided and reunited Berlin of the last 30 years. 

In commemoration of the construction of the Wall 

in 1961 the series of works is now being displayed 

in its full form. Entering into a dialogue with 

Heisig’s paintings, the Berlin photographer Günter 

Bersch’s pictures document the withdrawal of the 

Red Army from Berlin..

zIlle museum 

80 years after his death, the artist Heinrich Zille 

is still revered for his sharp, tongue-in-cheek illustrations 

of Berlin society. Berlin’s 80th honorary 

citizen is celebrated in this exhibition, which 

contains original drawings and etchings as well as 

photographs of the artist. 


Heinrich Zille (1858–1929) gave a face to a phase 

of Berlin’s history characterized by the Industrial 

Revolution, population growth and poverty. Working 

tirelessly to translate his observations into 

significant depictions of urban life Heinrich Zille 

created a body of work with quality and originality 

that has spawned generations of fans. The Zille 

Museum contains a comprehensive presentation 

on his life and works as well as drawings, lithographs 

and photographs.

Zucker-Museum tells the story of sugar – where it 

comes from, how it is produced, its cultural, economic 

and social significance and its place in our 

diet.

Südzucker – Plattling Plant during the 2006 

Campaign 

The exhibition consists of black and white photographs 

on baryte paper, taken by a Leica M7 

during the 2006 campaign in Südzucker Group’s 

Plattling Plant. The plant, which started operations 

in 1961, is one of the largest sugar factories 

in German. During the campaign 15,000 tons of 

beets are processed every day.

It’s tIme… 

The Kulturforum’s piazetta and the square in front 

of St. Matthäus-Kirche will transform into a stage 

for what will surely be the largest choir ever assembled 

in Berlin. Long Night visitors will be joined in 

song by members of the 35 choirs performing in 

museums over the night and directed by the Berlin 

conductor Kerstin Behnke. The concert will include 

remarkably similar songs from over four centuries 

and conclude with probably the most beautiful Ger-

Schatzkammer der Moderne 

Vieles, was heute im Museum steht, war früher Alltagsgegenstand. Für einen 

Archäologen der Zukunft wäre das KaDeWe heute eine Schatzkammer. Vom 

Luxusboulevard bis zur Feinschmeckeretage ist es ein Spiegel des Lebens und der 

Genüsse unserer Zeit. Sie haben schon heute die Möglichkeit diese Kostbarkeiten 

zu entdecken – und müssen damit nicht mal warten bis es Nacht wird!
