Minimum ratings change for air-conditioning units
On Jan. 1 of this year "10" became
the minimum standard SEER
rating for newly manufactured air
conditioning units, as mandated by
the federal government
Many homeowners this summer
will be faced with the decision to repair
the old A/C unit or install a
new one. and they should be aware
of the ratings and new energy-efficient
models.
Regulations requiring the higher
SEER rating and others controlling
the use of Freon-type refrigerants
were reviewed this week by Dan
Bergstrom of Bergstrom s Inc. in
Livonia.
Shoppers will still find some
"eight" and "nine" SEER (Seasonal
Energy Efficiency Rating) units
being sold, but they were manufactured
Less costly
. "^he higher the SEER rating, the
greater the efficiency; in effect, the
home. - '
The typical home central air conditioner
that is being replaced today
is 15 to 20 years old. and probably
rated at 6.5 SEER, said Bergstrom.
Putting in a new 10 SEER unit
can cut your electric bill by some 35
percent. Bergstrom said. That
means that savings in electricitycosts
can pay for the new unit in
"five to eij?hr years, while rattling
pollution from electrical power generating
plants in the bargain.
Home owners can even opt for an
in Michigan. In warmer climates
like Florida. SEER ratings of
