"Tom Wheeler's a wealth of knowledge. He

it," Dodaon said.
"Tom'a still the largest supplier of Navajo
rugs priced from $150 to $12,000. At the last
show, people asked for the lighter colors so he's

Navajo weavers developed and refined their
craft before the arrival of the Spanish. The Navajo
loom is upright as opposed to the horizontal
loom of the Mexican and Spanish-American
weavers.
Demonstrations will run continuously
throughout the show, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday,
July 17-18, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday. July 19. Natani expects to weave three
inches during that time.
"1 do very small weaving. Within a hundred
years, it might wear out," Natani said in an interview
from her home on the Navajo reservation
in New Mexico. "I will show how to card wool
and how to spin it. I usually bring some vegetal
dye, what we use on the reservation."

Weaving skills are passed down through the
generations of Navajo women. Designs for the
rugs are not sketched before hand. Young
weavers are taught to plan their pattern and colors
in their head, to visualize it in its entirety
from the beginning.
"Mom's a weaver. She taught me," Natani
said. "Weaving, it relaxes you. You have lot of
problems. It makes you forget all but weaving."
Shearing the sheep, washing the wool, gather-
ing plants for the dye and stringing the loom can
take the Navajo many days or weeks of work before
weaving begins..
"What I find most interesting is the Navajo a
