Magic
combined magic and ventriloquism/
'""Engineering was a little bit different
from this," said fcjaddrill.
who grew up in Dearborn" Heights
and earned a bachelor's degree In
aerospace engineering from U-M.
He worked as an air-to-air combat
analyst with Boeing Co. in Seattle.
Wash., and as a co-op student with
McDonnell Douglas Corp. in St.
Louis, Mo.
He began doing magic while in
college, although his vaudeville/
musical performances go back to
early childhood. Haddrill and his
father, a musician and music teacher,
often performed together.
"When I was 4 years old, I sang
my first solo in front of about 400
people." He continued to perform,
and was doing three or four shows
per week while working for Boeing
in Seattle.
Haddrill decided to go into performing
full time after he turned
down his third offer to be a cruise
ship entertainer. He performs at
schools and libraries throughout
Michigan and also entertains adult
audiences.
"You'd be amazed at how much
of the same material I do for adults
as I do for kids." said Haddrill.
who's married and has a dog. cat
and rabbit, but no human kids just
yet. The style of showmanship is
quite different for kids than for an
adult audience; but much of the
same material can be used.
participants in the Plymouth District Library's summer reading program.
Haddrill performs for senior citizens
and for other adult audiences
at corporate functions. He enjoys
that work, although he wasn't as
enthused about working at comedyclubs
and doesn't do that anymore.
He does educational programs at
schools and promotional programs
at libraries and shopping centers,
along with birthday parties. Scout
gatherings and other functions.
Haddrill brought his puppet.
Mury the cockatoo, to the Canton
Public Librarv last week. School -
Summer school from page 1C
surements.
One group of youngsters got starte^bv
determining what — length,
area, volume or angle — would be
used to describe the size of the
parking lot. Students moved around
the park in teams, figuring out such
things- a* how many times the
pump had to be pumped to fill a
cup of the number of students it
would take, one standing on top of
another, to reach the flagpole's top.
"They're collaborating really
well," Tripp-Opple said. "We try to
mi* them up. so they have to work
with different people."
Teachers and aides had expected
youngsters would have more difficulty
concentrating on their studies
in the summer. Instead, the kids get
involved in a project and forget to
yylfh thp rlrvlc
"All of a sudden, 55 minutes is
gone," Tripp-Opple said. "My biggest
frustration is I don't have more
time with them."
Students will receive an evaluation
at the end of the program.
age youngsters in the audience enjoyed
their ventriloquism show,
along with a variety of magical
feats.
"This one was primarily for entertainment."
In his performances,
Haddrill encourages kids to keep on
reading, although the extent to
which that's emphasized is left up
to library staffers.
His career switch is an unusual
one, and Haddrill finds people are
often interested in learning more
about that. He studied everything
he could get his hands on and
rather than letter grades. They've
been keeping "Captain's Logs," dai'
ly journals.
Reading the book "Brothers of
the Heart" by Joan Bios is part of
the program, and the Ann Arbor author
will speak to the students later
this month. An all-day field trip to
Lansing, including stops at the cap-,
itol and state museum, is also
planned.
Tripp-Opple knows students
benefit from learning about their
own state. Fifth graders in the
talked to others before making the
change. Haddrill's putting together
a seminar and book designed for
those looking to make a career
change.
He had to give up some benefits
when he left engineering, but does
just fine financially and doesn't regret
his decision. Those who- love
doing something and have the determination
to stick with jt
shouldn't hesitate to make a move,
he said. "Then you can make a living
doing pretty much anything."
Plymouth-Canton Community
Schools have a study unit on Michigan.
and she likes to see those efforts
continued.
"Oh. absolutely, I really believe it
should be revisited .every year because
their appreciation will develop
and grow." Knowledge will serve
students well for their rest of their
lives.
"They don't realize how much
Michigan has for entertainment
and recreation."
