Beat the Boss is BBC Children’s first formatted business programme for 8-12 year olds.
The show challenges children to compete against experienced business people in designing
a new product for the most competitive market in the world – the children’s market.
In January 2008, BEAT THE BOSS was one of the top 5 children’s programmes on
BBC One among the target audience of 6-12s – comparable with classics like Blue Beter
and Shaun the Sheep.
„Great when the children’s team beat the older team. We have lots of ideas too
and should be asked more what kids like and like best too.“ (Girl, 10)
„Exciting to see who wins.“ (Boy, 8)
„It tells us who knows more about kids – the children ort he adults.“ (Girl, 11)
BEAT THE BOSS is a surprising factual entertainment format for kids made by BBC Children’s,
celebrating the spirit of enterprise and creativity in the audience.
BEAT THE BOSS motivates children to be passionate about business and aims to encourage
entrepreneurial skills in young people. Each show pits three competitive children - THE BRIGHT
SPARKS - against three business executives - THE BIG SHOTS - in a challenge to design a new
product for the children’s market.
What the kids don’t have in business expertise, they make up for in knowledge of the peer group.
Given the same brief and an opportunity to research the market-place, which team will have
what it takes to impress 25 kid-judges with a winning product: the kids who have the insider
knowledge or the adults with the business acumen?
Two teams, two products, but ultimately only one can win….
THE BRIEF:
Your team must create the ultimate activity based outdoor game. It must incorporate physical
challenges and a scoring system. AND... It must be playable by three to four players.
Each team then has the opportunity to research the market place and brainstorm. Then they
each build a prototype of their idea and present their proposals to the jury.
the PrOPOsaLs:
THE BIG SHOTS chose to make a football themed game, designed to improve goal scoring skills.
THE BRIGHT SPARKS chose to make their outdoor game into an action packed obstacle course.
The jury of 25 kids test the proposals and choose their winner. This time THE BRIGHT SPARKS won!
The jury loved the exciting race against time to complete all the activities in the obstacle course.
