Commentary 

City council restoring order

Since the March 3 Temple City Municipal Election that seated 

two new council members, Tom Chavez and Vincent Yu, replacing 

longtime incumbents Cathé Wilson and Ken Gillanders, the new 

council began what most citizens hoped would be a positive change 

in the direction of our town and local politics. 

Since then, several issues have been addressed by the City Council 

which have pointed the city in then right direction. 

1. City Council. Cynthia Sternquist, a former Parks and Recreation 

and Planning Commissioner, has been selected to fill a vacancy 

on the City Council. 

There are difficult days that lie ahead. The dark cloud created by 

the recent indictments of past and current council members, as 

well as the ongoing Piazza litigation are big hurdles to overcome by

Cub Scout and PTA activities.

2009 Citizen of the Year, A.L. 

“Van” Van Houten. 

Van is very involved with the 

community. Both Van and his 

wife, Geneva, have volunteered 

for many years for Temple City 

events, wherever needed. Van 

has helped set up and moved 

the Moving Wall of Vietnam 

Veterans, helped at People For 

People events, Chamber events 

and helped at the Sierra Madre 

Playhouse. 

As a member of the Historical 

Society of Temple City, Van 

has spent endless hours volunteering 

as a docent in the museum, 

painting and wallpapering 

and cleaning. He is always 

there when needed. 

He is active in the Methodist 

Church of San Gabriel as a 

choir member, pianist and at 

many church activities. He 

cooks breakfast once a month 

for the Methodist men’s group. 

Every Tuesday, except holidays, 

you can find Van and Gen 

conducting the Temple City Seniors 

meeting. For twelve years 

Van has nurtured many elderly 

citizens as the President. For 

many of those seniors, this is

look, added an installation company to 

service the homeowner and changed the 

name to Seaport Window Center. 

Jim has resided in Temple City his 

entire life. He is a graduate of Don Bosco 

Technical Institute and Cal Poly Pomona. 

He has been a general contractor for 20 

years and now specializes in the installation 

of custom windows and doors. His 

wife teaches for the TCUSD and his children 

attend Temple City schools. Jim 

continues his involvement in the city 

with Temple City National Little League 

where he helps coach his son’s baseball 

team and is a very active member of his 

parish, St. Luke Church.

Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus 

invites singing ladies to join 

Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus is actively 

searching for women singers to become part of 

the chorus as it prepares to compete in Seattle in 

the fall of 2010 at the Sweet Adelines International 

Chorus Competition. The Chorus wants to increase 

its 55-member chorus with at least 25 new 

singers. 

Do you sing in the shower? Do you sing in the 

car? Have you had formal vocal training? Are you 

an experienced singer? Do you have an ear for harmony? 

If you answered yes to any one of these 

questions, the chorus wants you. No need to hesitate. 

The chorus can’t wait to meet you. 

All singers receive voice training and music 

education as a benefit of membership. If you can 

sing the notes, the chorus help with the rest. All 

voice ranges needed.

to attend the chorus’s weekly rehearsal at

It was in 1962 that Zak 

Zakarian opened his shop to 

repair the European vehicles of 

the day. These included the British 

Jaguar, Triumph and MG, 

the French Renault and Peugeot 

and the Fiat from Italy.

Allard, French Facel-Vega, a 

1909 Renault taxi, MG models 

TA, TC, TD, TF’and some early 

Ferrari Dinos. Zak also performed 

work for movie studios 

on set vehicles from the TV series

Rosemead was the place to be 

in the 1960s with many repair 

garages and enthusiasts in the 

area. Valley Boulevard was 

loaded with specialty shops that 

sold speed equipment, custom 

wheels, racing camshafts and 

intake manifolds and performed 

custom bodywork and 

interiors. 

These classics cars are now in 

the past or in garages of enthusiasts, 

replaced by modern machinery 

requiring current computer 

technology to repair and 

diagnose. Zak’s has kept up with 

the technology.

on Jaguars, M.G., Triumph and 

Rolls-Royce models are virtually 

replaced by complex Electronic 

Fuel Injection (EFI) on 

every vehicle made. Gone are 

the Lucas points replaced by Hi- 

Energy Electronic Ignition 

(HEI) systems to maintain 

emissions and keep our air 

clean.

current city council and staff. However, morale 

at City Hall remains upbeat. The staff is working 

hard to make sure citizens enjoy events and services 

previously provided, as well as new ones. 

With three new council members, the current 

council is committed to moving in a positive direction 

and to revitalize the city into one our citizens 

can be proud of. 

2. Redevelopment. City Council voted to retain 

Avant Garde to assist with redevelopment and 

business retention. Robert Paz has been working 

with staff and council members to create a plan 

to not only increase our sales tax base, but also to 

address the needs of current city businesses. A 

committee, comprised of local business members, 

service groups and citizens has begun to form to 

assist Avant Garde with its recommendations. 

3. Transparency in City Government. To ensure 

that citizens have the opportunity to view 

how their local government works, all City Council 

meetings will now be broadcast on local cable. 

The broadcast will also be available on the Web 

in the very near future as well, together with other 

city meetings throughout the year. The overall atmosphere 

of the meetings has changed. Most in 

attendance have stated that the current City 

Council is more receptive to comments by those 

in attendance and they feel comfortable speaking 

at the meetings. 

4. Joint Use Agreements. City Council has approved 

joint-use agreements with El Monte Unified 

School District and Temple City School District 

for the continued use of school facilities for 

city-sponsored programs. 

5. Balanced Budget. A balanced budget was 

recently passed without requiring the city to invade 

its reserves, while maintaining its quality services 

to our citizens. Interim city manager Cathy 

Burroughs, Financial Services Manager, Monica 

Molina and city staff worked very hard to meet 

city goals. 

6. City Commissions. The Council has been 

busy filling vacancies on both the planning and 

the parks and recreation commissions after receiving 

numerous applicants from many quali-

This year, she is Sponsorship 

Chairman for Ramrodders, the 

football booster group at 

Temple City High School. She 

is also one of the “devoted” 

team moms for the Rams Varsity 

football team. Keeping the 

traditions of the Rams alive, 

Janet plans and prepares for the 

pre-meal served before each 

football game. 

Janet is one of the founding 

members of the Temple City 

Schools Foundation. She serves 

on the Board of Directors as the 

PTA representative and has 

served as Vice President and 

Secretary in the past. 

Janet chaired a committee to 

raise funds to help pay for 

medical expenses for a high 

school senior and long-time 

family friend who was diagnosed 

with cancer. Congressman 

Adam Schiff was one of 

the honored guests who at- 

tended this overwhelmingly 

successful fundraiser. 

During Woman’s History 

month in March, 2007, Janet 

received the “Woman of the 

Year” award for Temple City 

from Congressman Schiff for 

her contributions made to the 

29th Congressional District. 

When her two oldest sons 

were seniors at Temple City 

High School, she enthusiastically 

planned the game booths 

that were part of the Grad Nite 

celebration, a safe, all-night 

party held on campus for the 

graduates following the Graduation 

ceremony. This year she 

is busily planning the game 

booths for the Santa Monica 

Pier Area of Grad Nite 2009: I 

Love L.A. She plans to continue 

this tradition next year when 

her youngest son, Collin, is a 

senior. 

Janet has been an active supporter 

of the performing arts in 

Temple City at both Oak Avenue 

Intermediate School and 

Temple City High School. She 

served on the Temple City High 

School Band Rose Parade committee 

during 2003, helping 

raise over $100,000 to support 

the Pride of Temple City’s debut 

in the Rose Parade on January 

1, 2004.

being a stay-at-home 

mom and being involved 

throughout the community.

7. Non-Smoking Ban. City Council recently 

approved a nonsmoking ban in all city parks, recognizing 

the health benefits of such a ban. 

8. City Manager Position. Longtime city manager 

and city attorney, Charles Martin, has retired 

and Cathy Burroughs, current Parks and Recreation 

Director, has been installed as interim city 

manager. 

The process for hiring a permanent city manager 

has intensified and the goal is to have someone 

in place by the end of summer. Eric Vail has 

been retained as interim city attorney until a permanent 

city attorney is selected.

years at CSUF. Any chance she 

gets, she and Matt like to go up 

North to visit Cary at the University 

of California at Berkeley 

where he is a sophomore 

and a sousaphone player in the 

band. 

She knows she’ll have many 

more opportunities to volunteer 

as Collin finishes high 

school. In her free time, she enjoys 

baking, photography and 

being creative. She works part 

time at a stationery store in San 

Marino. 

Janet’s husband, Matt, is 

serving in his eleventh year as a 

member of the TCUSD Board 

of Education. He is a Technical 

Sales Manager for AT&T.

City focusing on growing tax 

receipts by attracting business

The Chamber’s new fiscal 

year begins July 1. We have a 

new contract with the City and 

the focus will be on business attraction 

and retention. 

Our Planning Day and 

Board Retreat is set for Sunday, 

July 12, at the Chamber office. 

The new board of 13 will decide 

on new programs and 

policies. 

Another month has passed 

and the City is moving forward 

with several plans. Within 30 

days, a few more projects 

should be unveiled. 

Cloverleaf, a new bakery and 

coffee house is near completion 

at Cloverly Street and Las Tunas 

Drive. Another new business, 

Cafe Roule, hung its banner 

earlier this week on Las Tunas. 

A new herbal store recently 

opened at 9552 Las Tunas Dr.

it looks like a jewelry 

store at 9087 Las Tunas Dr. will

Colliau said, “We do not

Health Seminar slated for July 14 

The Temple City Chamber of Commerce will 

be hosting the fifth in a series of Health Seminars, 

slated for Tuesday, July 14, from 7 p.m. to 8 

p.m. Each seminar will be held on the second 

Tuesday of each month. Check Temple City Life

Inflammation of the shoulder 

refers to a kind or reaction

of soft tissue functions around

blood and chronic inflammation.

Healing process for perifocal shoulder inflammation 

Those interested in hunting 

or fishing, target shooting, conservation 

work, charity work 

and participating in family-oriented

The club has a number of 

annual activities open to all 

members and on occasion to 

longer be attached and pain will 

be released. 

In a case history, Angela, age 

52, has had right arm pain for 3 

months. The pain is worse at 

night and movement was limited, 

she could not raise her arm 

from the back and tenderness 

was found in shoulder joints.

Repetitive Motion Injury

Movements done repeatedly over a 

long time, such as working on an assembly 

line or using a computer can cause a 

condition known as repetitive motion 

injury. Repeated motions strain smaller 

muscles and joints causing pain, swelling 

and limited use of the body part. 

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), is one 

type of repetitive motion injury involving 

the wrist. 

The word “carpal” comes from the 

Latin word “carpus,” meaning “wrist,” 

and “tunnel” refers to the shape formed 

by the wrist bones and a tough membrane 

binding the bones together. If the 

soft tissues within this tunnel swell, they 

press on and pinch the Median Nerve, 

causing pain. “Syndrome” indicates several 

symptoms together characterizing a 

specific disease. 

Symptoms of CTS include tingling 

and intermittent numbness of the hand, 

often accompanied by pains shooting up 

the arm from the wrist, generally worsening 

at night disrupting sleep. Hanging 

your hand over the side of the bed 

and rubbing or shaking it may lessen the 

pain. A severe condition may lead to 

weakness of the thumb and one or more 

fingers, or unpleasant stiffness or clumsiness 

in the fingers, especially in the 

morning. 

POSSIBLE CAUSES: 

• Vigorous use of the hand producing 

blood vessel swelling. 

• Inflammation of tendons in the fingers, 

possibly due to overuse with repetitive 

motions or unusual strain on the 

wrist. 

• Rheumatoid arthritis causing increased 

swelling in the wrist. 

• Fluid retention (from PMS or the 

last trimester of pregnancy) putting 

pressure on the nerve. 

• Various metabolic diseases, including 

gout, hypothyroidism, acromegaly or 

amyloidosis. 

Some very mild cases may clear up by 

themselves. Classic treatment immobilizes 

the wrist with a splint for two or 

three weeks. In many cases, physical 

therapy helps, using electrical stimulation, 

manual therapy and exercise. Taking 

B vitamins helps in mild cases. Making 

modifications in using your wrist 

and hands can make a tremendous difference, 

as this addresses the reason the 

problem occurred in the first place. In

• Use your wrists and hands appropriately. 

• Do not overwork, tire or strain 

them. 

• Listen to your body for signals of 

overuse and try to make the movement 

more efficient. 

• Take movement breaks so muscles 

and joints have a chance to “recharge.” 

• Vary your activities so you are not 

using the same muscles continuously. 

• In your leisure time, do activities 

using other parts of your body. 

• Include a regular stretching program 

for the whole body. 

• Do a regular program of aerobic 

exercise to be sure you are getting oxygen 

to your entire body, since disease 

forms in the absence of oxygen.

Rabies clinic and dog license renewals 

The City of Temple City will sponsor a public 

Rabies Clinic from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 

Friday, July 10, at Temple City Park, 9701 Las 

Tunas Dr. The cost of the rabies vaccination 

is $5 per dog. Dr. Pavlik from Community 

Companion Animal Hospital will be on hand 

to give the rabies vaccinations and to answer 

questions. 

Resident dog owners may also purchase 

their dog license at the clinic. The license fee

Grand Ledge, Michigan. After 

serving in the Korean War, Van 

married his high school sweetheart, 

Geneva in 1952. Later on 

in the same year, they moved to 

California and set-up house in 

San Gabriel. In 1959, they relocated 

to Temple City. 

Van and Gen have three children, 

son Steven and daughters 

Lori and Amy. As parents, Van 

and Gen actively took part in all 


of their children’ activities. All 

three went through Temple City 

schools. 

Now the Van Houten’s are 

blessed with seven grandchildren. 

Van and Gen recently celebrated 

their fifty-seventh wedding 

anniversary. They are a 

fine example of a happily married 

couple. 

After thirty years of service, 

Van retired from Pacific Telephone 

Company as a relocation 

manager. He then began organizing 

day trips and extended 

trips for his friends. This led to 

the birth of his company: 

ROTG, which is short for Retirees 

on the Go. 

For nineteen years he managed 

to plan trips locally, across 

the country and to Europe. 

Even though Van retired from 

ROTG, he most recently organized 

a European trip for a 

group of ten friends, including 

himself and Gen. This will be a 

riverboat trip leaving in August. 

The trip will begin in 

Amsterdam and end in 

Budapest, Hungary. 

Van will be home in time for 

the Chamber’s Annual Installation 

and Awards Banquet, 

which takes place on Friday, 

Aug. 28, in the Parish Hall at St. 

Luke Catholic Church and 

School. Formal invitations will 

be mailed to Chamber members 

and dignitaries. Watch for

TCUSD improves attendance 

The Temple City Unified 

School District thanks its 

school families for making sure 

children are attending school 

and are ready to learn. 

Every school increased student 

attendance. 

District-wide student attendance 

has increased from 

97.43% to 97.74%. For the current 

school year, this increase 

brings $96,323.70 in additional 

revenue into the District. 

If the student doesn’t attend 

school for one day, the District 

doesn’t get paid and, again, 

based upon the District’s current 

ADA and our funding per 

student that will equate to a loss 

of approximately $1 million 

each year. 

Absences from school 

should only be for health reasons, 

family emergencies and 

justifiable personal reasons, as 

permitted by law and District 

policy. Also, whenever possible,

After the honeymoon the couple will be 

living in Elko, Nevada. Christopher has 

already relocated there and is working 

as a geological surveyor. Faith plans on

Walk for Wishes. They were the top fund-raising team with more than $9,000 raised for the foundation.

her team participated in the 

Make-A-Wish Foundation’s 2nd 

Annual Walk for Wishes. This is 

Michelle’s report to her team. 

Hi Everyone. I just wanted 

to personally thank you for 

walking with me on Saturday. 

It really meant a lot to me. I had 

such a great time. 

Sorry that I didn ‘ t get a 

chance to really talk to all of 

you, my mind was everywhere. 

If you didn’t get a chance to 

stick around for the whole 

event, our team came in first 

place for fundraising. Our 

team raised more than $9,000. 

That’s amazing. 

Thank you for all of your 

donations and for getting the 

word out to your families and 

friends. 

If we raised that much this 

year, I cannot imagine how 

much more we can raise next 

year. 

By coming in first place, we 

got a special prize: 18 tickets 

and a suite for a Sparks basketball 

game on June 21. It would 

be great if you could go to that, 

but I realize that is Father ‘ s 

Day, so I totally understand if 

you can’t.

TCHS Students Win AP Statistics Contest 

The Southern California Chapter of the American 

Statistical Association recently announced two Temple 

City High School teams among their top 10 Poster 

Project winners. 

Congratulations to Yvonne Tat, Carmen Tan, Derek 

Lau and Jason Fujioka for their study on “Does Birth 

Month Affect Test Scores?” and to Jenny Fang, Brandon 

Wong, Amy Zhang, and Johnny Zhou for their 

M&M’s project. 

“The poster contest is a great culminating activity, 

allowing students to synthesize their year-long statistical 

learning while collecting data on specific topics of 

interest,” said advisor Gary Ledger.

The TCUSD Board of Education recognized the accomplishments 

of two talented artists at their regular 

meeting on May 27. 

Demi In, a second grader at Emperor Elementary 

School was recognized for her artwork being selected 

as the second grade winner from over 450 entries in the 

Los Angeles County School Board’s Art Exhibition. 

Demi’s artwork will be permanently displayed at the 

Los Angeles County Office of Education. 

The TCUSD Board of Education 

recognized the accomplishments of 

two talented artists at their regular 

meeting on June 24. 

Thalia Loi, a second grader at 

Emperor Elementary School was 

recognized for her artwork being 

selected as the first place winner 

from kindergarten through second 

grade entries in the 

Water is Life art contest sponsored 

by the Upper San Gabriel Valley 

Municipal Water District. 

The TCUSD Board also recognized 

Isabel Tian, a 2009 graduate 

from Temple City High School. Her 

artwork received a third place award 

Thirty nine TCHS students participated in this 

project. Intriguing studies included The NBA, Where 

Amazing Happens; Facebook versus GPA; Are Girls 

Really More Culinary-Arts Inclined Than Boys?; Sight 

vs. Hearing Reflexes; and Does Advanced Placement 

Environmental Science Help? 

Judging was based on statistical knowledge presented 

in both writing (as a poster) and verbally (in interviews). 

Each team was interviewed by three separate 

judges.The contest was held on May 30 at the City of 

Hope Cancer Center in Duarte.

the meeting because she left yesterday 

to attend an out-of-State college. 

Thalia and Isabel’s artwork will 

now be entered into the annual art 

contest sponsored by the Metropolitan 

Water District of Southern 

California. 

Both students are gifted artists 

who have a natural ability to express 

their ideas in an exceptionally creative 

way. 

All eligible art entries were displayed 

during the Upper District’s 

Board Meeting on May 18. 

Carolina Li, a fifth grade student at Cloverly Elementary 

School was recognized for receiving an Honorable 

Mention Award for her artwork entered in the United 

Nations Programme’s 18th Annual International 

Children’s Painting Competition.

TCUSD announces all 

schools excel in 

Academic Performances 

On May 21, the State released the 2008 Base Academic 

Performance Index (API) test scores for all California 

schools. The scores for Temple City Unified 

School District show that all traditional schools in the 

District continue to rank as high performing. 

Oak Avenue Intermediate School took the top honor 

in the District with an API score of 888. The California 

Department of Education ranked Oak with a top score 

of 10 for both the statewide ranking of all middle 

schools and similar middle schools in California. 

“Oak Avenue is proud of the scores they have attained 

through the overall involvement of students, teachers, 

parents, and staff,” commented Principal Lawton Gray. 

“These scores are great; however, they are only one 

method of evaluating student success at Oak. One way 

we are improving student achievement is with our Promoting 

Success program where students receive additional 

support from counselors and teachers.” 

Emperor and Longden Elementary Schools both 

scored 887 and Cloverly Elementary scored 878. Also a 

high-performing school, La Rosa Elementary scored 

830. 

Temple City High School scored 822; only about 17% 

of high schools in California scored 800 or above. 

The State Board of Education sets the State-wide API 

target at 800 out of a possible 1,000. State guidelines 

require that schools achieve an API rating of 800 or 

above to receive a high-performing rating. These API 

ratings are a result of the State’s compilation of test data 

from the California High School Exit Exam and the State 

Standardized Testing and Reporting Program. 

Superintendent Chelsea Kang-Smith said, “There is 

no question that these wonderful results are a tribute 

to dedicated staff and their collective support of all of 

our students. TCUSD’s team of certificated, classified, 

and administrative staff build the foundation for student 

success.” 

La Rosa offers full-day Kindergarten 

When the 2009-2010 school year opens on Sept. 3, 

La Rosa Elementary School will offer a full-day kindergarten 

program. 

Kindergarten students that live in La Rosa’s attendance 

area will benefit from extending their school day 

from 3-1/2 hours to 6 hours. Intra- or Inter-District 

permits will be approved on a space-available basis. 

“Full-day kindergarten contributes to school readiness, 

leads to higher academic achievement, improves 

student attendance, supports literacy and language development, 

and benefits children socially and emotionally,” 

said Principal Tiffany Haeberlein. 

More than 90% of La Rosa teachers and parents support 

this program. Two-thirds of U.S. students attend 

full-day kindergarten programs. Statistics show that 

43% of California kindergartners and 74% of Los Angeles 

County kindergartners attend full-day programs. 

TCUSD’s Board of Education unanimously approved 

La Rosa’s full-day kindergarten program at their 

May 13, 2009 meeting.

Rock Star performs at La Rosa 

“Not so Hannah Montana” (aka Principal Tiffany 

Haeberlein) rocked the La 

Rosa Elementary School campus 

on June 10. 

As a school, Ms. 

Haeberlein challenged the La 

Rosa Rascals to read 250,000 

pages outside of school hours. 

If they reached their goal, Ms. 

Haeberlein promised a “rock” 

concert. 

Students successfully completed 

this challenge. The 

Rascals read an amazing 

371,000 pages from February 

25 through April 13.

Husband-Wife team address Blue Star gathering

A husband and wife team 

were the main speakers at the 

annual Blue Star summer gathering, 

June 5, at the First Baptist 

Church. 

Following dinner, retired 

Petty Officer 2nd Class Valerie 

Floyd spoke. Valerie joined the 

Navy in 1980 when she was just 

17 years old and loved her career 

in the Navy. Only 5 days 

before 9/11 she had joined the 

USN Reserves and stayed on 

standby with the Fleet Industrial 

Supply Center out of San 

Diego until November of 2004. 

At 42 years of age as a wife 

and mother of two children, 

Kaitlyn and Kyle, she was called 

back to active duty to serve in 

Kuwait as a Customs Border 

Clearance Agent for the 1st Na-

On June 5, the Temple City Blue Star Banner 

Program celebrated its fifth year by hosting its 

annual summer dinner at the First Baptist Church 

of Temple City. The room was packed and the 

agenda was full. 

The program exists to honor those Americans 

who serve the cause of freedom by living in harm’s 

way as members of the Armed Forces to preserve 

freedom for the rest of us. 

As usual, honored guests were members of the 

military and veterans. 

During dinner the regular feature of color 

slides showing military personnel in action was 

shown. It had been updated by Tony Hillbruner 

and, as always, stirred the patriotism in everyone’s 

heart. 

The dinner fare included expertly char-grilled 

hamburgers and hot dogs plus a variety of trimmings 

and side dishes. 

Dessert of banana splits followed the speakers 

which gave all the participants one more change 

to buy tickets to distribute their chances among 

the myriad of raffle offerings. 

The Blue Star Banner Program would like to 

thank: 

The First Baptist Church of Temple City for 

opening their great hall for the event; The Honor 

Guard of Boy Scouts from Troop 161, who presented 

the colors for the Pledge of Allegiance; Bob 

val Customs Battalion until July 

2005. She was stationed on the 

Iraqi border and responsible for 

inspecting tanks, equipment, 

and personnel coming out of 

Iraq. 

Valerie shared a lot about the 

actual conditions she worked in 

regarding what she was inspecting, 

how inspections were conducted, 

and time off. Once she 

returned home she was stationed 

in Coronado, California 

with the Naval Coastal Warfare 

Group I, Inshore Boat Unit M. 

She was released from active 

duty in September, 2007 and 

received an Army Commendation 

for 7,000 tank and equipment 

inspections during her 

Iraqi Freedom tour of duty. 

The next speaker was 

Valerie’s husband, Marine Sgt. 

Greg Davis. It was tanks that 

brought them together! He 

spoke about his military career 

which spanned six years based 

out of Camp Twenty-Nine 

Palms. Davis was a Tow Gunner 

(anti-tank) officer serving 

in Iraq, Desert Storm from August 

1990 until May 1991. He 

went into Kuwait City under 

special orders because of his 

unique skill, which earned him 

a Navy Commendation with a 

combat V. 

Both Valerie and Greg were 

riveting speakers, bringing 

home to us the stories of warfare, 

skirmishes, difficult living 

conditions and cultural disparities. 

The Blue Star Committee

comments and for serving the 

nation.

First Lutheran Church & School to host Blood Drive, July 12 

First Lutheran Church and School Temple City will 

be hosting its second American Red Cross blood drive 

of 2009 in the Parish Hall from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, 

July 12. The local community is not only welcome, but 

urged to participate, as there is a blood shortage that 

occurs in the area every summer. 

First Lutheran has been participating in two to three 

Red Cross community blood drives annually for well 

over 25 years as a way of giving back to the community

Sunrise Community Church is joining with thousands 

of other churches across the nation on Sunday, 

July 5, to pray for our nation with Call 2 Fall. Call 2 Fall 

is not a promotion, but a movement of people who realize 

this nation has become derailed because it has 

chased after empty promises. 

“As we celebrate the independence of our nation, 

followers of Christ recognize we need to fall 

to our knees and ask God to reshape our lives and 

renew our land by turning to Him in prayer for

Methodists change worship time 

First United Methodist Church of Temple City has 

changed the morning worship service time to 9:30 a.m. 

starting Sunday, June 28. The church will revert to the 

fall schedule on Sunday, Sept. 13. 

The adult Sunday School is now suspended for the 

summer and will resume in the fall. The church also 

will be welcoming a new pastor, the Rev. David Palmer 

and his wife, Beth and son, Ethan, on July 12. 

Pastor Palmer comes to Temple City First from Glendale 

UMC where he was the Pastor for Spiritual Formation 

for the last 2-1/2 years. He was a missionary to 

Khabarovsk, Russia, and was part of organizing the first 

United Methodist Church in the Far Eastern part of 

Russia. 

The public is invited to come and help the UMC celebrate 

not only in the worship service but also welcoming 

Rev. Palmer on July 12. 

The Alzheimer’s Association will have a speaker to 

talk about a “Healthy Body and Healthy Brain,” at 4 p.m. 

Saturday, July 18, in Fellowship Hall. The public is invited 

to come and join this free event and learn more 

about being healthy.

Kiwanis Club receives TCUSD Public School Award 

On June 24, the Board of Education of the Temple 

City Unified School District presented a Public School 

Award to the Temple City Kiwanis Club in recognition 

of Kiwanis’ long-standing support of TCUSD students 

and staff and to celebrate the Club’s 70th anniversary. 

The Club recognizes Students of the Week; donated 

wall maps for Walk to Washington, a drug-free, healthy 

living program; donated replacement books and supplies 

destroyed as a result of an arson fire at Emperor 

Elementary School; donated books for La Rosa Elementary 

School; donated Safe Schools magnets; and last but 

certainly not least, loaned TCUSD their portable pancake 

grill for the annual back to school breakfast. 

Kiwanis President Chuck Souder accepted the Award 

on behalf of all Club members. “It is my privilege and 

honor to accept this Award on behalf of the Club’s members 

both past and present,” said Mr. Souder. “I am proud

TCHS Grad Night Scenes 


Donors make TCHS Grad Night a success 

Thanks to all who helped 

In a year of tremendous economic downturn 

and great business uncertainty, the fundraising 

efforts facing the Grad Night Committee 2009 

at Temple City High School looked daunting. 

But the answer came in over the past several 

weeks, as Temple City residents, its business 

community, parents and non-profit organizations 

joined forces to send our seniors off in 

style. 

Both local and national businesses stepped 

up to help out, donating much-appreciated cash 

as well as their products and services for various 

fundraising events, including Casino Night 

and student raffle prizes.

wall at the entrance to Grad Night on Friday, 

June 19.
