Ideas for Using the Media Files
The following ideas will illustrate how teachers and students can use the media files appropriately
within the Terms of Use of the Individual License for offline learning:
Learner:
1. Download the files. You are allowed to put these files on one media device (e.g., audio
CD, MP3 player etc.), and at the same time, have them installed on a portable MP3
player or on your computer. The files will play equally as well on your computer using any
application that handles MP3 files. You cannot copy and distribute to other students.
2. Decide on the listening activity you want to practice. You can use the lesson outline on
page 3 as a guide, or you can listen to them in any order you choose.
3. Go to the specific listening activity at www.esl-lab.com using the URLs listed on page 3.
4. Print the Webpages for the activity.
5. Review the Pre-Listening exercise for each activity and complete any suggested tasks.
This will help you improve your familiarity and language skills associated with the
listening topic. Too often, students jump into a listening activity before preparing
themselves adequately, and they experience frustration because they do not understand.
Thus, previewing the Pre-Listening exercise will help prepare you to achieve your
comprehension goals.
6. Answer the five multiple-choice questions in the Listening Section of the activity. These
questions often focus on understanding main ideas, pinpointing specific details, drawing
conclusions, and making inferences.
7. Do the Post-Listening exercises. Focus on building your speaking skills in more
unstructured situations.
8. Study the key vocabulary on the Script page. Try to create your own sample sentences
using these words. Be sure to think of situations in which you would actually use the
vocabulary. It is not very helpful to memorize words that you will probably never use
again. Consider writing these words down in a small notebook you can quickly review
while traveling, for example, to and from school or work.
Teacher:
1. Download the files. You are allowed to put these files on one media device (e.g., audio
CD, MP3 player etc.), and at the same time, have them installed on a portable MP3
player or on your computer. This will give you several options for playing them to your
students. You are note allowed to make multiple copies of the files for the students and
either distribute them via CD copies, email, Websites, or any other transmission method,
but you may purchase a multiple-user license.
2. Make as many paper copies as you need of the Webpages for any listening activity and
distribute these to your students. In other words, you can play the MP3 audio file on a CD
player or computer, and the students can listen and do the exercises for that activity.
3. Follow the other suggested activities as found above in the Student section. Make the
most of each activity by extending students’ learning beyond the suggested Post-
Listening exercises. The more students learn how to use language in extemporaneous
situations, the more comfortable and confident students will become.
