Welcome – Croeso
In Wales we’re known for our warm welcome in the hillsides. And in
Rhondda Cynon Taf, we have some of the most spectacular hillsides to
be seen.
With the rise of the UK staycation, Rhondda Cynon Taf is the perfect
destination if you love the great outdoors. With a network of walking
and cycle routes, inviting hills stretching endlessly away and a diverse
choice of activities, Rhondda Cynon Taf is south Wales’ hidden secret.
Here you can follow riverside trails, historic canal towpaths and forestry
tracks. You can join our popular Valleys Walking Festival in September
or explore mile upon mile of the National Cycle Network, stopping only
to take in breathtaking views or to spot exciting wildlife species. Or
perhaps you’d prefer to enjoy the outdoors at a more leisurely pace in
our picturesque and peaceful parks.
Rhondda Cynon Taf was at the heart of the industrial revolution and
many clues to this proud heritage still stand. From the fascinating
Rhondda Heritage Park near Pontypridd to the outstanding Dare Valley
Country Park, forged from a former mining valley, there is much more to
the area than many realise.
In Rhondda Cynon Taf there is plenty to keep you busy on even the
rainiest of days, including our museums, theatres, market towns and the
renowned Penderyn whisky distillery.
Rhondda Cynon Taf is neatly sandwiched between the vibrant Welsh
capital, Cardiff, and the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park,
making it an ideal base for further sightseeing.
When you’re in Rhondda Cynon Taf, you know you’re in the heart and
soul of Wales. So come along for that warm Welsh welcome and see
another side of Wales.
The Taff Trail
Route: RCT section - Quakers Yard to
Nantgarw (full length - Brecon to
Cardiff)
National route: 8
Category: Greenway / traffic free
Distance: 55 miles (Brecon to Cardiff)
Running from Brecon to Cardiff and passing
through the heart of Rhondda Cynon Taf,
the Taff Trail is Wales’ longest established
cycle route. Taking in some of south Wales’
most varied and beautiful landscapes, the
route follows rivers and railways and runs
through forests. It also links up with
Rhondda Cynon Taf’s network of trails,
including the Cynon and Rhondda Fach
routes, as well as the spectacular Trevithick
Trail in neighbouring Merthyr Tydfil.
Several train stations along the Taff Trail
make it very easy to access. From Merthyr,
the route takes walkers high above the
valley, offering sweeping views and passing
Surface: Mainly tarmac
through former mining communities. The
trail runs through pretty woodland as it
passes Abercynon, then joins a new section
of path alongside the river Taff. Traces of
the old Glamorgan canal are hidden in the
woodlands along the route.
In the market town of Pontypridd, the Taff
Trail passes Ynysangharad Park, which has
a popular outdoor pool (seasonal opening
only) and hosts a range of summer festivals
and shows. The trail then leads to Taffs Well
and past the landmark fairytale castle of
Castell Coch before continuing through
Cardiff to the waterfront.
Church Village Community Route
Route: Llantrisant to Tonteg
Category: Greenway / traffic free
Distance: 4 miles
This community route opened in 2010 and
instantly won approval from walkers,
joggers and cyclists. It runs alongside the
Church Village bypass but its clever design
means the path is surprisingly peaceful and
scenic. It is the first traffic-free trail to be
completed under the Valleys Cycle Network,
an exciting project by cycle charity Sustrans
and local authorities to extend the National
Cycle Network in the Valleys by 100 miles
over the next two years.
The route can be picked up at various
points or to travel the whole route can be
accessed at Cross Inn near Llantrisant or
near Cheriton Grove (Powerstation Hill) in
Tonteg. Information boards along the route
offer fascinating insights into wildlife,
particularly the globally important Rhos
pasture, renowned for its purple moor
grass, orchids and ivy-leaved bell-flower.
The pasture is also the habitat of rare
butterfly species the Marsh Fritillary.
Surface: Tarmac
Nearest railway stations:
Pontyclun, Trefforest
Tourist Information: Pontypridd
This community route has several picnic
spots, eco-benches made from reclaimed
wood and even its own artwork, in the form
of a six-foot tall Victorian vent incorporating
cheerful paintings of future modes of
sustainable transport designed by local
school children.
From Tonteg, where the route comes to an
end, walkers can continue along Llantwit
Road, passing the University of Glamorgan,
to pick up the Taff Trail to Merthyr Tydfil
or Cardiff.
Dare Valley Country Park
Where the clanking and grinding of 19 mines could once be heard, there is now only
birdsong and bubbling brooks. The trails at Dare Valley Country Park offer a real
chance to get away from the hustle and bustle and get back to nature.
The walks range from family-friendly to strenuous and all start from the visitor centre.
Way-marked Routes
Bwllfa Trail:
This is a short, circular walk around the
valley floor, passing the Cascade waterfall
and following sections of the River Dare.
Cae Mawr Trail:
This pleasant criss-cross circular route dips
in and out of wooded areas and travels
along the side of the valley. Walkers feeling
especially fit might want to stop at the Trim
Trail along the way for an extra workout.
Penrhiwllech Trail:
This is a strenuous route taking walkers over
rough terrain onto an upland plateau, the
Tarren y Bwllfa. The Dare Valley is a classic
example of a glaciated U-shaped valley
and Tarren y Bwllfa is the glacial “cwm” at
its head. This uphill walk is well worth the
effort due to its majestic views and birdlife.
Dare Valley Country Park also has a
heritage trail for visitors who want to learn
more about the geography and rich
industrial history of the valley, and the Dare
Valley Quest, an interactive walk for
families.
Leaflets for all these trails are available
from reception or can be downloaded at:
Pen Pych, Blaencwm
Distance 10km
Surface – variable
This walk is set in the stunning landscape of
the Upper Rhondda Valley, and takes you
high above the villages to the view point of
Penpych above Blaenrhondda.
If Wales is said to be a land of mountains
and waterfalls then this walk provides
irrefutable proof.
Using the Forestry Commission car park
in Blaencwm is an ideal starting point to
this walk.
Among the highlights of the area is Llyn
Fawr. The lake was drained in the early
20th century and revealed a large hoard
of Bronze Age artefacts, which are no
on display at the National Museum of
Wales, Cardiff.
Attractions along the route include the
visible remains of the Iron Age Village at
Hendre Mynydd.
Nearest Train Station – Treherbert
Tourist Information - Pontypridd
From the Rhigos viewpoint, walkers can
take in fantastic views across the Brecon
Beacons to the north and down Rhondda
Fawr to the south.
Pen Pych is one of the few flat topped
mountains in Europe and overlooks the
village of Blaenrhondda, which is
historically important as the largest
undefended Iron Age settlement in south
east Wales.
There a number of waterfalls cascading
down the valley sides, and stunning views.
Please be aware this strenuous route
footpaths are of varied surfaces and there
are a number of steep ascents. Weather
can be very changeable ,especially on
higher routes. Suitable clothing and
footwear is highly recommended, and a
copy of the relevant OS 1:25,000 map (OS
Explorer No. 166 Merthyr & Rhondda).

Cwm Hafod Trail
Category: Traffic free
Route: A short, circular walk from
Rhondda Heritage Park
Distance: 1.5 miles
On this circular route there are plenty of
viewpoints at which to stop and admire the
lower Rhondda Valley and Rhondda
Heritage Park. Walkers can see the colliery
in its landscape setting, with its reclaimed
tips of colliery waste and the old routes
used to transport coal. The geography of
the narrow, sheer-sided valley is seen at its
dramatic best from this route, while other
points of interest include the Darren y Pistyll
waterfall and the Gethin Terrace.
This way-marked route, although short,
includes a steep climb. It may be uneven
and muddy in places and strong footwear is
recommended. The walk starts and finishes
at the Rhondda Heritage Park’s free car
Dare to be Different
One of the jewels in Rhondda Cynon Taf’s
crown, Dare Valley Country Park is set in a
natural amphitheatre, heightening visitors’
closeness to its varied landscape and wildlife.
The epitome of a changing landscape, this
500-acre park was once a glaciated valley.
The impressive rock face at its head – home
to peregrine falcons – contrasts strikingly with
the peaceful woodland below, where a
number of viewing platforms stand as wellplaced
havens to listen to birdsong and take
in the park’s rugged beauty.
Dare Valley’s history is as rich as its wildlife.
Home of the first mechanised coal-cutting
machinery in Britain, the finest steam coal in
Europe was mined here. But as the coal
industry declined, Dare Valley’s 19 mines
stopped operating and, in 1973, the site
became the first country park in Britain to be
created from the spoil tips of former
collieries. This distinct heritage is outlined
fully in the information centre, which also
houses a viewing platform for visitors to see
up-close the comings and goings on a busy
bird table outside.
The visitor centre has a cafe selling freshlyprepared
food, an exhibition gallery, two
fully-equipped seminar rooms and a
welcoming new reception area with
conservatory lounge. Dare Valley also has a
range of outdoor education facilities and
environmental education services.
As well as its series of trails suitable for a
range of ages and abilities, Dare Valley has
a new adventure playground, a playground
for younger children, a fitness trail and
orienteering courses for families and groups.
One day just isn’t enough to see all that
Dare Valley Country Park has to offer. Luckily
for visitors, the park has a well-appointed
three-star hotel and newly-extended threestar
camping and caravanning park. Dare
Valley is an ideal base for exploring Rhondda
Cynon Taf – after all, who dares wins!
Rhondda Heritage Park offers a fascinating
glimpse into a bygone way of life. Based at
the former Lewis Merthyr Colliery, it is a
living testament to the mining communities
of the world-famous Rhondda Valleys.
The Heritage Park shows Rhondda’s rich
culture and character in an entertaining
and educational way. Experience the
thrilling descent into the belly of the colliery
on one of our underground tours, where
former miners share their anecdotes and
reveal the answers to the questions you’ve
always wanted to ask. Then climb aboard a
thrilling simulated ride* back to the surface,
where you can wander back in time along
a reconstructed village street and find out
more about domestic and commercial life
in the Valleys.
The visitor centre also has a well-stocked
gift shop and Level One, a contemporary
gallery and cafe space with stunning views
over the lower Rhondda. Level One is a
relaxing place to meet friends for coffee,
have lunch and enjoy the regularly updated
programme of exhibitions, including
exclusive artworks, ceramics and jewellery.
For younger visitors there is the Energy
Zone, an adventure-packed, secure
outdoor play area perfect for days out and
birthday parties.
Rhondda Heritage Park’s jam-packed
calendar of events includes the annual
Vintage Transport Festival, the magical
Santa’s Toy Mine and historical talks. With
facilities for meetings, conferences and
seminars in restored colliery buildings and
with catering menus to suit all tastes and
Blazing a trail
Rhondda Cynon Taf has a rich heritage, and our walking and driving trails have been specially
created to help visitors uncover as much of the past as possible. Along the way you will
discover castle ruins, fascinating facts and our series of Blue Plaques, dedicated to renowned
figures such as the eccentric druid Dr William Price and boxing champ Freddie Welsh.
Walking
Llantrisant
Heritage Trail
The ancient town of
Llantrisant centres around
the Bull Ring, an imposing
square with a statue of
cremation pioneer Dr
William Price. From here
the trail winds past
fascinating buildings such
as ‘Y Pwysty’, or the Weighing House, and
the Guildhall, which was used for the
‘Hundred Court’. It also stops at Castle
Green, where visitors can see the stocks and
a memorial plaque to the local longbow men
who fought in the Battle of Crecy in 1346.
Aberdare
Heritage Trail
Aberdare dates back to
medieval times, while
artefacts from the Neolithic
and Bronze Ages and
Roman times have been
found locally. In 1801 the
population stood at just
1,486, but by 1921 had
exploded to more than 55,000 thanks to the
increase in iron manufacture in places like
Hirwaun and Abernant and the rapidly
expanding Cynon Valley coal industry.
Aberdare’s walking trail starts at the Market
Hall, next to which used to be the town’s
slaughterhouse! The route also includes
Queen Mary’s Cottage, a miner’s cottage
visited in 1912 by King George V and
Queen Mary.
Pontypridd
Heritage Trail
Although not an old town,
Pontypridd has an
interesting history stemming
from the building of its
landmark bridge over the
River Taff in 1756.
Pontypridd reaped the
benefits of the coal industry
and in 1818 opened its chainworks to meet
the demand for chain cable. The last chain
made here was destined for the QE2! The
town trail takes in the Brunel Viaduct, the
Musicians’ Mural and the railway station,
which for many years had the longest
platform in Britain.
Driving trail
A series of four driving
trails that will enable the
user to discover the
heritage of the area.
years before
Stevenson; the grave of the
remains of the Powerhouse which were the
focal point of the Tonypandy Riots and many
more interesting locations that are part of the
rich heritage of the area.
We Don’t Let Bygones Be Bygones
The past is central to Rhondda Cynon Taf’s present, which is why we are proud of our
museums and other places of interest.
Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery
This charming museum and gallery is
housed on the site of the 19th century
Gadlys Ironworks on the outskirts of
Aberdare. Its ‘Footprints through time’
gallery uncovers 200 years of the Cynon
Valley’s social and industrial history and
shows how the lives of the people of the
valley have changed.
The gallery has some of the best in
contemporary Welsh art, craft and design
through our Space and Innerspace
exhibition programme. There is an extensive
range of craft and designer-led gifts,
including jewellery, glass and ceramics, in
the shop, which also stocks a large range
of art and architecture books, limited
edition prints and local history publications.
And for a refreshing drink or a freshlyprepared
meal, the Footprints Cafe is a
great place to end your visit.
Pontypridd Museum
Although the market town of Pontypridd is
not an old one, it has a rich history and
many interesting features.
The museum is housed in the Tabernacl
Chapel, which was built in 1861 to the
design of its minister, Edward Roberts.
Rebuilt in 1910 at the height of the town’s
prosperity, the interior has an exceptionally
fine ceiling and art nouveau stained glass.
The pine woodwork came from Russia and
Poland, a reminder of the international
trade created by the coal industry. The
splendid pipe organ is still used for concerts
today.
The museum also houses a Tourist
Nantgarw China Works Museum
Nantgarw China Works is the only
remaining archaeological site of porcelain
production in the UK. Visitors can discover
the fascinating history of the works, view
William Billingsley’s exquisite porcelain and
famous porcelain was made. The museum
also recounts the importance of the
Glamorganshire Canal, which formed the
western boundary of the site en-route from
Cyfarthfa, Merthyr Tydfil, to Cardiff.
The stable has been converted to a
