5.3. Kick-off meeting to introduce <strong>the</strong> project to all stakeholders and raise <strong>the</strong><br />
profile of butterflies – used to launch <strong>the</strong> Red Book<br />
As explained in <strong>the</strong> 2009 report, it was decided that it would be more beneficial to use this<br />
activity to launch <strong>the</strong> final red list to key stakeholders, especially government, as by <strong>the</strong> end<br />
of <strong>the</strong> first year it was <strong>for</strong>eseen that <strong>the</strong> list would be an authoritative technical document<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> provisional list which was originally planned.<br />
A prestigious launch <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Red Book was held at <strong>the</strong> EU Delegation in Ankara, an event<br />
hosted by DKM, <strong>the</strong> Dutch Embassy and <strong>the</strong> EU (Turkey). The event was well attended and<br />
was followed by positive reviews of <strong>the</strong> Red Book in high profile magazines.<br />
Details on <strong>the</strong> work:<br />
An event to launch <strong>the</strong> Red Book was held at <strong>the</strong> EU Delegation in Ankara on 7 February, in<br />
partnership with <strong>the</strong> Dutch Embassy and <strong>the</strong> EU (Turkey). More than 65 people attended<br />
including butterfly watchers, academics, EU staff, National Customs offices, General<br />
Directorate of Forestry, Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, Ministry of<br />
Agriculture, Tübitak, funders (including UNDP and BTC – Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline<br />
Company’s Environmental Investment Programme) and NGOs (including Svetlana Miteva<br />
and Kars Veling from BCE).<br />
Presentations were given by Resit Akçakaya, IUCN (via internet link from <strong>the</strong> United States),<br />
on <strong>the</strong> role of national red lists and Evrim Karaçetin on <strong>the</strong> red-listing process followed in<br />
Turkey.<br />
