4. A National Butterfly Conservation Strategy <strong>for</strong> Turkey<br />

4.1. Develop strategy elements with <strong>the</strong> participation of key stakeholder<br />

groups<br />

All preparatory work <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Conservation Strategy was successfully implemented in early<br />

<strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Details on <strong>the</strong> work:<br />

A list of potential stakeholders was compiled through a combination of existing contacts and<br />

visits to ministries to identify <strong>the</strong> most relevant departments and interested individuals, and<br />

through individual networks, input to development of <strong>the</strong> Strategy was extensive. With each<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance of butterfly conservation and <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>thcoming Conservation Strategy were<br />

discussed.<br />

An initial threat analysis and stress-based assessment, based on <strong>the</strong> recommendations of<br />

IUCN and <strong>the</strong> Conservation Measures Partnership (see<br />

http://www.conservationmeasures.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Classification-ofthreats-and-actions.pdf),<br />

was carried out by <strong>the</strong> DKM team. This focused on <strong>the</strong> threats<br />

facing Turkey’s butterflies at national and local levels.<br />

A desk study was carried out to identify existing agro-support schemes with <strong>the</strong> potential to<br />

be used to encourage and promote High Nature Value (HNV) farming systems.<br />
