League and Cuppers:
This year the 3rd division had too many teams for a simple league, so the format was
changed to a two-stage tournament, with positions in the Michaelmas groups
determining starting positions in the Lent groups. Also, a Plate tournament was
introduced for teams not in cuppers, or knocked out in the first round
13th March 2007: Caius win Cuppers
Caius have won the 2006-07 Cuppers competition, with a crushing 4.5-0.5 victory
over Queens' in the final on Monday (12th March). They reached the final with
victories over Trinity II, Trinity III and Churchill I, and are the first team from outside
the top division to win cuppers for 4 years. Congratulations to captain Ruari Hamlin
and his team, who have also secured promotion to the top flight for next year.

13th March 2007: Ruari Hamlin wins farewell blitz
The farewell blitz - the last event of the season where we say farewell to our departing
committee, wrap up another year of chess and start to panic about rapidlyapproaching
exams - was held last Saturday, 10th March. The turnout was somewhat
disappointing, though this was probably connected with the Varsity Match being held
on the same day. In the end an exciting finish saw Ruari Hamlin take first place with a
score of 4.5/5, closely followed by runners-up Stephen Cairns and Aloysius Han on
3.5/5. Congratulations to Ruari, and to all involved with a successful year for CUCC.
Cairns, who scored 5.5/6. The single half-point Stephen dropped was in the second
round against Aloysius Han, who finished runner-up with 4.5/6.
27th February 2007: Varsity Match Line-Up Revealed
The 125th Varsity Match will be held at the RAC clubhouse in Pall Mall on Saturday
March 10th, as the Cambridge team attempt to take back the trophy after last year's
5th February 2007: Duane Rowe scores 12/14 in simul
A late report from last Saturday (27th January), when NM Duane Rowe of Jamaica
faced 14 CUCC members in a simultaneous display. He acquitted himself well,
winning 12 of the 14 games. Congratulations are also due Jeremy Sharples and Rich
Lee, who inflicted Duane's only defeats.
24th January 2007: Cambridge defeated by Insurance Club
The annual match between CUCC and the Insurance Cub was held last weekend, and
sadly ended in a 3.5-1.5 defeat for the university side, despite a quick win by CUCC
president Sean Lip. Details and some games can be found here
18th January 2007: Welcome back!
27th November 2006: Duane Rowe wins Christmas Blitz
The final event of Michaelmas was the annual Christmas blitz tournament, which took
place on Saturday. 18 players competed in an 8 round Swiss tournament, and the
competitive nature of the tournament was illustrated by the fact that no-one remained
unbeaten. In the end, Duane Rowe took first place, with victory in a tie-break against
Andre Kueh, both players having scored 6/7. The final standings:
1.Duane Rowe, Wolfson, 6/7
2. Andre Kueh, Trinity, 6/7
3. Stephen Cairns, Trinity, 5/7
4. Tariq Oozerally, Fitz, 4.5/7
23rd November 2006: Cambridge narrowly defeated in Freshers'
Varsity
The Freshers' Varsity Match took place in Oxford last Sunday, with a squad of 13
players making their way down to The Other Place. After a pub lunch shared by the
two teams, the match itself was very close and hard-fought, with all games lasting at
least 90 minutes. Sadly, in the end we lost by the slender margin of 6.5-5.5 (the
bottom board was not counted as Oxford fielded a second-year on that board). Robert
Dover won the best game prize with a fine tactical victory against a strong opponent.
For more information see the match report, or a selection of games.
8th November 2006: Gustav Holzegel wins Rapidplay
The Rapidplay held on Sunday 29th October was fiercely contested by the 11
2006-2007 Archive: Freshers' Varsity Match
On Sunday 19th November, 13 first years made the arduous coach journey to Oxford
to play in the annual freshers varsity match. Soon after arriving, we went for a pub
lunch with some of the Oxford team. It was a great opportunity for the team to get to
know each other a bit better - indeed most of the team seemed to be mathmos and so
recognised each other from lectures! It was particularly interesting to discuss the
recent 'toiletgate' in the FIDE World Championship final between Topalov and
Kramnik.
The match itself took place in University College, apparently one of Oxford's oldest
colleges (not that we had much opportunity to look round!). It was clear from the
outset that it was going to be a very even contest. On paper, Cambridge seemed to
hold an advantage on the top boards, able to field the new Jamaican champion, Duane
Rowe. However after an hour's play Oxford appeared to hold decisive advantages on
several of the lower boards. Tariq Oozeerally, Steve Cairns, Robert Dover, Mikko
Fischer and Aloysius Han formed a formidable middle order, all recording wins.
Robert's game was particularly impressive, securing a sharp tactical win against an
accomplished opponent, which won him the best game prize.
While Oxford held a 5-2 edge at one stage, this did not tell the whole story.
Cambridge held strong positional advantages on almost all of the remaining boards,
with Barraclough looking particularly strong. Unfortunately at around the 2 hour
mark, both Rowe and Barraclough blundered. Although Rowe's error was only
marginal, on the surface appearing to make sound positional sense, Heaton, the
Oxford board 1, took advantage with great authority. By contrast in a seemingly
unassailable position Barraclough managed to blunder his queen! While this would
normally lead to immediate resignation, his dangerous attack gave him good fighting
chances. Again much credit is due to the Oxford player for remaining so cool under
immense pressure. Overall Cambridge slipped to a 6.5-5.5 defeat, with the result not
decided until the penultimate game. A loss is always disappointing, but there was a lot
of encouragement to take from the day. Rowe and Tyomkyn intermittently
demonstrated the talent required to challenge for Half Blue honours, and the
aforementioned middle order deserve top credit, all showing the match sharpness
needed for winning chess.
The annual match between CUCC and the Insurance Cub was held last weekend, and
sadly ended in a 3.5-1.5 defeat for the university side, despite a quick win by CUCC
president Sean Lip.
Be2
I was thinking for a while about whether to move the bishop to f1 or to e2; I couldn't
see anything wrong with the latter. Now just hoping to castle quickly and go into the
middlegame a safe pawn up.
8...h6 9. Nf3 e4 10. Ng1
White's position looks a bit sad but I'm not sure Black's is much better. The plan now
is d3 followed by getting rid of the e4-pawn, then developing KB and KN and castling
10...Bd6 11. d3 O-O 12. Be3
f2 was weak so I gave it some extra protection just in case
12...Re8 13. dxe4 Nxe4 14. Nf3 Bg4 15. Nbd2 Qe7? 16. Nxe4 1-0
The bishop on d6 hangs after Black takes the knight. This game took about 25 mins
per player.
Eckersley-Waites
On the club afternoon on 14th October, Varsity player Adam Eckersley-Waites gave a
simultaneous display, taking on 12 club members at the same time. He handled this
very well, scoring 8 wins and 2 draws, with just 2 losses. More events of this kind are
planned for the future, so look out for announcements on this website or through the
email lists.
Below are some pictures from the simul:

Rowe

A late report from last Saturday (27th January), when NM Duane Rowe of Jamaica
faced 14 CUCC members in a simultaneous display. He acquitted himself well,
winning 12 of the 14 games. Congratulations are also due Jeremy Sharples and Rich
Lee, who inflicted Duane's only defeats. Two pictures (somewhat blurry) are below:
2006-2007 Archive: 125th Varsity Match
Cambridge emerged victorious at the 125th Varsity Match, held yesterday in lavish
surroundings at the RAC clubhouse, Pall Mall. After a balanced opening session,
Cambridge raced into a 4-1 lead at the end of the first time control, and Elizabeth
Roberts scored the crucial half-point to secure victory, the final score being 5-3 to
Cambridge.
After the short journey down from Cambridge, the opening ceremony was held at
12:00. After a somewhat unusual method of determining colours, which fortunately
secured for us black on odd boards, which we agreed beforehand we wanted. Then, at
12:30 play was underway, as we sought to avenge last year’s narrow defeat.
After a mixture of fairly standard openings and some rather more unconventional stuff
(the board four game commencing 1.e4 c5 2.a3), first blood was drawn on board two,
when reigning Jamaican champion Duane Rowe scored a short, sharp victory over
WM Olena Boytsun to give Cambridge the lead, and also earned himself the
Cambridge best game prize. This lead was short-lived however, as Richard Mycroft's
unusual opening choice failed to pay off, and after a tactical struggle Tom Eckersley-
Waites forced checkmate to level the scores at 1-1, for which he was awarded the
Oxford best game prize.
This remained the state of play up until the time control, when out of seemingly-level
positions Cambridge won three more boards, with Adam Eckersley-Waites, Gustav

Holzegel and Tom Nixon defeating Robert Heaton, Steffen Schaper and Alvar Kangur
in time scrambles. Tom's win was especially nice as it was a defeat to the same
opponent in time trouble last year which cost Cambridge the match.
So, as if out of nothing Cambridge led 4-1. Shortly after the time control this was 4-2,
as the experience of Grandmaster Luke Mcshane paid off in a clinical victory on
board one. This left boards seven and eight to determine the match, both in positions
which looked rather drawish but with winning chances for Oxford. Thus it remained
for another hour, with the tension rising amongst both the players and the crowds of
spectators around both boards. Finally Elizabeth Roberts, the Cambridge board eight
managed to force a draw by repetition, and the match was won, causing much
rejoicing amongst the Cambridge team. With the result of the match determined, the
players on board seven were playing just for pride, and agreed a draw a couple of
moves later to leave the final score 5-3 to Cambridge.
Speaking after the match, Oxford captain Herve Hansen expressed thanks to the
sponsors and the arbiters, and congratulated Cambridge on winning "a thrilling
match". He added, "it was a dramatic turnaround just like last year - unfortunately,
unlike last year, it was a turnaround for the worse."
Cambridge captain Sean Lip also thanked those who made the match possible, his
Cambridge team for doing a "good job", and the Oxford team for a good match. This
victory leaves the scores over the history of the match as 56 to Cambridge, 51 to
Oxford, with 18 draws.
