Introducti<strong>on</strong>:<br />

This essay is an attempt to discover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> place <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> residential houses in Iranian history and<br />

culture. As a place where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y spend a significant amount <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> time <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re, should be able to<br />

fulfill <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir needs physically and spiritually as well as satisfying <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir cultural and religious<br />

aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir lifestyles.<br />

Mainly focusing <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan which is located in Isfahan province, where it is a locus<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g>. The city itself is a field where exhibits <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> traces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> works <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> architects<br />

who could find suitable methods to organize <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spaces in such a way that can functi<strong>on</strong> as a<br />

medium in order to signify <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> landmark and lifestyle. By looking at<br />

many old buildings around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world, it is noticeable that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are reas<strong>on</strong>able relati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

between human lifestyle and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> place. As Alexander, who is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> writer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

architectural books about identity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> places, has menti<strong>on</strong>ed: The identity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> old buildings<br />

come from each <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir parts being united with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir envir<strong>on</strong>ment and, can recognize <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

forces around it and obeys <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> principle <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment and human nature. [1]<br />

There are some articles published about Iranian Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> however, few <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m<br />

are particularly focusing <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> functi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> residential houses. There is a need to questi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> principles <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> designing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> residential houses in Kashan from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> points <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> culture, religi<strong>on</strong><br />

and traditi<strong>on</strong> al<strong>on</strong>g with envir<strong>on</strong>ment and climate c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city. Two key examples <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al houses in Kashan will be investigated. As a brief introducti<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> houses,<br />

Bafande's house and Shahyalani's house are two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> oldest traditi<strong>on</strong>al houses in Kashan<br />

and based <strong>on</strong> reports <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cultural heritage organizati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Iran, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y bel<strong>on</strong>g to Qajar Period.<br />

Qajar dynasty ruled Iran from 1795 to 1925. [2]<br />

Before starting to focus <strong>on</strong> different aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> design <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> houses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan, it is essential to<br />

describe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> role <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> art in Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a <strong>on</strong>e to <strong>on</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> between<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> and pure art.<br />

Eastern art is based <strong>on</strong> spirituality. It pays more attenti<strong>on</strong> to traditi<strong>on</strong>s, which has been<br />

formed by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> society. [3] Iranian traditi<strong>on</strong>al art can perform functi<strong>on</strong>ally in such a<br />

way that aims to c<strong>on</strong>sole <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> human soul [4], while <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> attempts to create an<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment that suits particular aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> human life, which respects his believes and<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>al ambiti<strong>on</strong>s, his thoughts and high spiritedness [5] as well as providing safety and<br />

privacy. [3]<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> importance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> spiritual issues in <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g>, Islamic architects has<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidered climate and envir<strong>on</strong>ment as <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most important factors that generates a<br />

correlati<strong>on</strong> between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spiritual demands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> inhabitants, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> climate,<br />

and applied <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se factors to create a formal form. [6]<br />

The ancient city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan, situated in central <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Iran where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> human presence<br />

dates back to 6,000 B.C., <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> city can be c<strong>on</strong>sidered as <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first foci for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

organizati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> civilizati<strong>on</strong>. [7] It is situated in a hot and dry regi<strong>on</strong> with very hot summers and<br />

cold winters. For Instance In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year 2010 Minimum temperature in winter was -5 Celsius<br />

and Maximum temperature in summer was 45 Celsius [8] The difference between day and<br />

night temperature is high in Kashan, The reas<strong>on</strong> is its proximity with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kavir desert. [9]<br />

Shortage <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> water resources, few greeneries and desert winds which spread sands in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

area, [10] are main elements resp<strong>on</strong>sible for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> harsh situati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re. In order to create a<br />

harm<strong>on</strong>y within this climate c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vernacular architect has implemented some<br />

strategies in resp<strong>on</strong>se to such wea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, while basing his designs <strong>on</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental c<strong>on</strong>cerns<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sustainable interacti<strong>on</strong> between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> human and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment is observed. [11]<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> residential houses in Kashan is based up<strong>on</strong> several principles in order to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ceive a design that satisfies necessary demands <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> society.<br />

1. C<strong>on</strong>densed Urban Fabric:<br />

Urban fabric in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole city <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan is c<strong>on</strong>densed. Houses are compressed to each<br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and have merged walls. [12] This can minimize <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> wall surfaces with air so<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re would be less <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rmal exchange between inside and outside <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> buildings.<br />

Meandrous and narrow allies with high walls in sides can reduce winds speed and provide<br />

shady area in passages. (Fig. 1) Like allies, building has enclosure too. They are<br />

surrounded by high walls which make isolated from outside envir<strong>on</strong>ment. These walls<br />

perform as a shell, protecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building from intense sun ray and desert dust winds and in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cold seas<strong>on</strong>, from cold winds. There are few openings <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> shell and in many cases<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly opening is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main entrance. [10]<br />

2. Introversi<strong>on</strong>:<br />

Before c<strong>on</strong>sidering <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> word introversi<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g>, it’s better to have a clear<br />

understanding <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> it from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> moral point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> view including meanings that have a tendency to<br />

inner feelings and avoid from showing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. Facades have been presented in Iranian Islamic<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> at very modest level, (Fig. 1-2) however <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior has been decorated in an<br />

elegance way. (Fig. 3) Here, this can be called as an introvert <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g>. [13] This types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> has applied in many residential houses where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re isn’t any direct c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />

or openings between interior and exterior spaces. By creating some openings in interior<br />

spaces, it opens <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spaces into a private envir<strong>on</strong>ment that will be explained fully later.<br />

Most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> times when walking in allies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan, it is not easy to realize this phenomen<strong>on</strong><br />

features <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r side <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> walls without getting inside <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building. The <strong>on</strong>ly clues <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

domestic life are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrances. These houses are modest in relati<strong>on</strong> within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir urban<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment are like jewel inside an un polished cover. [5]<br />

3. Vernacular Materials and Giving Them Qualifying:<br />

Materials available in Kashan are generally mud and brick and mud mixed with chaff. Usually<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same soil that has been prepared for excavating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground is also been used as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

material for c<strong>on</strong>structing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house. The traditi<strong>on</strong>al architect knows every c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

and structural property <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> materials. He employs <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> right place and in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

appropriate amount [5] using this material with heavy thickness so that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> walls surrounded<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house functi<strong>on</strong> like a capacitor that observe solar heat during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> day and transfer <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

heat to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nights time. So that it can balance <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> temperature and<br />

reduce fluctuati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> it during day and night. The architect stripped <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> raw material, refined<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> attribute and adorned <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m with patterns and lines until it progressed to ascending<br />

degrees <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> perfecti<strong>on</strong> step by step. In this way <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> raw materials which were<br />

unpleasant, heavy untamed and dull were shaped into a pleasant feature light delicate tamed<br />

and alive. [5]<br />

4. Courtyard:<br />

Almost all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> houses in Kashan has <strong>on</strong>e courtyard or more and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rooms and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

spaces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house take place around <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard and have openings to it. The courtyard<br />

is functi<strong>on</strong>ing an element to unite <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different space <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house. As this has been<br />

menti<strong>on</strong>ed before <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire house so that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard is surrounded with very high and<br />

thick walls that can make shady area inside <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yard. The humidity provided by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> water and<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants and in additi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> shade provided by high walls, can increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relative<br />

humidity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> air and cool <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> air in order to create a microclimate in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> middle <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

house. The airflow passing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard and touching <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> water in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pod enters <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

spaces <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house and cool <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. (Fig. 4- 5)<br />

Courtyards are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main core <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> social ga<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ring in Iranian culture. It provides outdoor activity<br />

and privacy. A family can get toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> evenings and water <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> gardens and enjoy <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

small envir<strong>on</strong>ment and beauty provided inside <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir house in a private and comfortable<br />

atmosphere. Courtyard gives life to buildings in a dry climate and few greenery. Water in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

courtyard not <strong>on</strong>ly smooth <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> air but also creates a good perspective. Sound <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> water<br />

coming from water work [14] and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reflecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> light <strong>on</strong> it can all add a dynamic quality to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> space, while water and light are two aes<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>tical parameters in Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g>.[15]<br />

Form inside <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building seems like a statue that has embraced and surrounds<br />

people, increasing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> feeling <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> intimate b<strong>on</strong>d between humanity and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> space.[5]<br />

Usually <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole building and specially <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard is lower than ground level. In dry<br />

climate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan, access to water resources was an important parameter in design.[16]<br />

Going down in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> earth could provide easier access to water reservoir and underground<br />

water pathways. in additi<strong>on</strong> by placing a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> building under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground heat transfer<br />

between inside and outside decreases and c<strong>on</strong>trols <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> temperature <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> day and night.[10]<br />

underground floor in Kashan houses are living places and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> architect pays a lot <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> attenti<strong>on</strong><br />

for designing and decorating it as a main part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house. Underground floor is a cooler<br />

place although in some cases all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> it is under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground and in some cases it is <strong>on</strong>e meter<br />

upper <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground floor and light and ventilati<strong>on</strong> is provided for it by this space. in some<br />

cases, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> middle <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r yard take place in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground in which trees<br />

are planted and it is called "Godal baghche"(Fig. 5). This place with more shade and<br />

humidity could provide a beautiful and cooler place for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house.<br />

6. Orientati<strong>on</strong> and Seas<strong>on</strong>al Functi<strong>on</strong>:<br />

Most <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> traditi<strong>on</strong>al houses are formed al<strong>on</strong>g an orientati<strong>on</strong> which is near to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orientati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

north to south. This allows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house to be divided into a part in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> north and a part in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

south <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house. Due to geographical locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kashan, spaces located in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yard which face <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> south directi<strong>on</strong>, observe more sunray and heat and become<br />

warmer where and can be used in cold seas<strong>on</strong>s. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> opposite spaces located in sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn<br />

part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yard which face <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> north directi<strong>on</strong>, observe less sunray and are shady so can<br />

provide a cooler place. They are mostly used in hot seas<strong>on</strong>s although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re might be some<br />

excepti<strong>on</strong>s in some cases. This seas<strong>on</strong>al movement occurring between spaces in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house<br />

is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> human resp<strong>on</strong>ses to climate c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>.[6] Houses in Kashan are living places for<br />

all four seas<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year. Occupants may move to a more suitable place when seas<strong>on</strong><br />

changes in order to advantage a better situati<strong>on</strong>. For instance basements can provide cooler<br />

places for hot summers. "Sardab" is an underground semi open space which is usually<br />

located in sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house that can provide a cooler place in hot summers. Sardab


usually has a p<strong>on</strong>d and sometimes has access to underground water pathways which are<br />

called "Ghanat".<br />

7. Privacy and Hospitality:<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>cepts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> privacy and hospitality have had a great impact <strong>on</strong> home culture and house<br />

formati<strong>on</strong> in Iranian Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g>.[6] Iranian family both needs to have privacy as well<br />

as social c<strong>on</strong>tact with neighbors’. In order to achieve this aim, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hierarchy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> spaces starts<br />

with a public space and it c<strong>on</strong>tinued with a semi-public space, semi- private and at last a<br />

private space. Spatial c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> to manage this divided <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole house into spaces with<br />

different characteristics such as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrance, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exterior (guest room) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior<br />

(private rooms). In Iranian houses <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrance were extremely important and sequences as<br />

well. The intenti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrance was to block direct sight to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior. Vestibule or<br />

"Hashti" was designed as a stopping point and could be used as a temporary recepti<strong>on</strong> room<br />

for those who did not need to enter <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quest room. (Fig. 6-7) recepti<strong>on</strong> area or exterior<br />

room is a part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house into which male guests can enter.[17] This room is a main space<br />

in house where has been well decorated[18], at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time marks <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> family. This room is situated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main ax <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> yard and has <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best view<br />

to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> courtyard with double height ceiling. Its interior is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most private part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house<br />

where it has been designed in a way that should not be seen or accessible by guests. As<br />

walking from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entrance towards <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior spaces, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are usually two different<br />

corridors; first <strong>on</strong>e is facing to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exterior part and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d <strong>on</strong>e, which is usually l<strong>on</strong>ger<br />

curvy, facing to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior part. This pattern <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> spatial c<strong>on</strong>figurati<strong>on</strong> is by no means<br />

accidental, it is a carefully c<strong>on</strong>sidered resp<strong>on</strong>se to balance needed relati<strong>on</strong> between<br />

hospitality and social c<strong>on</strong>tact as well as providing privacy throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> house.<br />

a l<strong>on</strong>g corridor to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior part and a with a l<strong>on</strong>g corridor to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interior part and<br />

short corridor to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exterior part a short corridor to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exterior part<br />

C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>:<br />

Residential buildings in Iranian Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> have been designed based <strong>on</strong> culture,<br />

religi<strong>on</strong>, traditi<strong>on</strong>s and in resp<strong>on</strong>se to climate and envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each regi<strong>on</strong> and lifestyle.<br />

This <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> could create forms which is able to generate a correlati<strong>on</strong> between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

parameters. Old residential houses in Iran despite <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> having a simple outer shell or facade,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were providing a complex inner shell in order to create an elegance and comfortable<br />

atmosphere for its residence. In spite <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rich history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Iranian Islamic <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al houses, today residential buildings are not designed as carefully as before. They<br />

are mostly designed by focusing more <strong>on</strong> its appearance or its outer shell ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than<br />

creating a complex and comfortable interior. As lifestyle in Iran has been changed quite fast<br />

recently. this has evoked new demands. It is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> resp<strong>on</strong>sibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>temporary architects to<br />

realize <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m and achieve a comprehensive understanding <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se needs in order to be able<br />

to resp<strong>on</strong>se to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> new c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. They can design spaces and create forms adapted to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

new lifestyle and be able to satisfy <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se requirements. Studying <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> history <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> in<br />

residential houses in Iran can introduce a new path to architects that how those traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

houses could find suitable resp<strong>on</strong>ses to people's demands at that time and lead <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m to<br />

create a better <str<strong>on</strong>g>architecture</str<strong>on</strong>g> appropriate for this period <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> time.<br />
