I am pleased to provide you with the second edition of the Lebanese American University
Fact Book 2010-2011.
The Fact Book 2010-2011 depicts in facts and figures the academic year 2010-2011, a year
of continuous expansion resulting from years of collaboration, dedication and visionary
commitment at every level of the institution. One of this year’s major accomplishments is the
development of the Strategic Plan 2011-2016. The fundamental inspiration of this strategic
plan is LAU’s commitment to fostering excellence in all facets of university life, addressing
student needs, providing involving settings, fostering inclusive learning environments,
and cultivating forms of pedagogy that enhance student learning and development. It sets
LAU’s direction for the coming five years, and aims to take it to a higher level of academic
excellence.
The Fact Book provides a wealth of information about the university. In addition to general
information about LAU, its history and its evolution, the Fact Book provides data on our
students, faculty, staff and services. The Fact Book presents a comprehensive picture of
LAU through various lenses.
A printed copy is available upon request, and an online version is available for download
in Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf) (http://www.lau.edu.lb/offices-services/ira/
ABOUT ThE INSTITUTION
History and Location
Founded as a women’s college in 1924, the Lebanese American University is a not-for-profit private institution of
higher education in Lebanon rooted in the tradition of exemplary education. Since it was granted absolute charter
by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1955 (the sole entity authorized by the State of
New York to incorporate institutions of higher education and authorize them to confer degrees), the charter has been
amended several times in response to the institution’s growth. The University currently boasts two campuses: its
historic home in Beirut and a new campus in Blat, overlooking the historic city of Byblos. The two campuses together
house seven schools. The emergence within the past two years of three new schools —the School of Medicine, the
School of Nursing and the School of Architecture and Design — along with the transformation of the newly acquired
University Medical Center – Rizk Hospital (UMC–RH) into a state-of-the art teaching and research facility, attest to the
institution’s continued commitment to growth and excellence.
accreditation
LAU is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. The University
of the State of New York is the sole entity authorized by the State of New York to incorporate higher
education institutions and authorize them to confer degrees.
Beirut College for Women (which was to become LAU) was granted a provisional charter by the Board of
Regents in 1950, and an absolute charter five years later. Since then, the charter has been amended
several times in response to the institution’s growth.
The University of the State of New York is a large system of educational services, including thousands
of schools, colleges, universities, museums, libraries and other institutions. Its Board of Regents sets
overall education policy for the State of New York and chooses a Commissioner of Education, who
serves as president of the University of the State of New York and heads the New York State Education
Department.
accreditation
Degrees awarded by the Lebanese American University are officially registered with the Ministry of
Higher Education in Lebanon and with the Board of Education in the State of New York.
institutionaL accreditation
In 2007 LAU became a candidate for accreditation by the Commission on Institutions of Higher
Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (CIHE-NEASC). CIHE-NEASC is the
oldest regional accrediting association in the U.S., developing and regularly reviewing standards for
educational institutions of all levels in the U.S. and other countries.
After a comprehensive evaluation visit by a CIHE-NEASC team in November 2009, LAU received full
LAU began the rigorous accreditation process in fall 2005, and has demonstrated at very stage its
MAJOR PROJECTS UNDER DESIGN
gibran Library
The architectural firm Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani has submitted four alternate designs, two of which have been
retained and developed.
The first option is a single structure incorporating both library space and administrative offices. Its fluid, curvilinear
shape would introduce a dynamic element to the campus’ exterior spaces, while creating a spectacular interior
space around a central multi-use courtyard. The elliptical shape evokes Phoenician sea voyages from the shores
of Lebanon to Europe.
The second option consists of two separate buildings, providing distinct identities to both the library and the central
administration area. The design’s fractal form reflects the excavated mountain of the construction site, and creates
an interesting outdoor canyon-like space between the two structures.
engineering Workshop & Labs
The design of the Engineering Workshops and Labs building has reached an advanced stage of the concept phase.
Several coordination meetings were held between architects from Khatib & Alami and the end-users in an effort to
properly identify the exact needs and expectations of the various engineering departments involved.
Beirut infrastructure
Pierre Dammous and Partners were commissioned to study the existing power infrastructure in Beirut, and were
asked to recommend needed upgrades.
The design includes a new data center in the basement of the former Faculty Apartment Building; it will serve as an
IT Center with dedicated uninterrupted power supplies. This center will constitute LAU’s largest data center.
OFF CAMPUS LOCATIONS
Beirut camPus
capital suites Building – off campus dorms
This is an eight-story off-campus dorm building with a total area of 1919 square meters. In order to provide more
comfortable living quarters to male students and faculty members, the LAU Beirut dormitories and apartments have
been moved off campus. The new facility is conveniently located 10-minute’s walking distance from LAU, in a safe and
secure area of Commodore Street. It accommodates residential units for male students and faculty members, including
four faculty apartments, single rooms for 20 students, and 16 shared rooms to accommodate 21 students.
four rented apartments
Four apartments facing the lower gate of the Beirut campus were rented in Summer 2010 in response to growing
demands for office space. These apartments are currently being re-designed to house the CEP and the IWSAW
offices.
CAMPUS MASTER PLAN
The Campus Master Plan represents a physical translation of LAU’s mission to engage, prepare, and partner with
our neighbors, national and international friends, and LAU students, faculty, and staff. The goal of the university is to
guide future growth and development over the coming years, and to provide a physical campus framework embodying
its mission. The Campus Master Plan is an ongoing plan that is continually reviewed to maintain alignment with LAU’s
vision.
