Greetings:
In the Waterloo Region, summer is finally here. Hardly any Spring to speak
of. By the time you read this newsletter, Seminar 2001 will be history. Seminar
has been the culmination of over two years of planning and preparation. The
University of Waterloo site was booked some four years ago. It was important
to the former Waterloo-Wellington Branch to host Seminar 2001, as 2001 is
the fortieth anniversary of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Seminar 2001 is
a joint production of the two new branches, the Waterloo Region Branch and
the Wellington County Branch.
The Houston Lecturer this year was Wendy Cameron, researcher and lecturer,
speaking on the Petworth Project, 1832-1837. The research of this early
emigration project has resulted in two recently published books, Assisting
Emigration To Upper Canada, by Wendy Cameron and Mary McDougall
Maude and English Immigrant Voices, Labourers’ Letters from Upper
Canada in the 1830, edited by Wendy Cameron, Sheila Haines and Mary
McDougall Maude. A presentation of research documents was presented to
Susan Bellingham, Head, Special Collections, University of Waterloo for
deposit at the University, by Reverend Edward John Rowell Jackman, sponsor
and patron of the volumes.
We also had a book launch of a new Waterloo Region Branch publication,
Family Research in Ontario’s Waterloo County, by Ryan Taylor. This is an
update of Ryan’s 1986 publication, Family Research in Waterloo and
Wellington Counties. The new publication covers only Waterloo County, now
Waterloo Region. The book is 136 pages with index and is priced at $12.95
Cdn. plus postage. The book was published with the assistance of a grant from
the Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation. It should be noted that Ryan
donated the manuscript to the Branch.
I wish to publicly thank the many volunteers, the Branch executive, the
Seminar 2001 committee and many, many others who gave of their time and
energy to make Seminar 2001 a success. I am deeply grateful and very proud
to have been part of this experience.
Charter Night for the Waterloo Region Branch was celebrated on May 14th,
2001, when O.G.S. president Ken Bird presented our branch with a framed
O.G.S. Branch Charter confirming our status as the Waterloo Region Branch
of the Ontario Genealogical Society. We became a new branch on January 1st
this year, one of two new branches formed when the Waterloo-Wellington
Branch was divided.
I wish all of you including our hard-working executive and volunteers a most
pleasant and enjoyable summer. My wife Rosemary and I have planned a
camping trip to P.E.I and Nova Scotia in June. We are looking forward to revisiting
that part of Canada.
The Cover: Sheave Tower
Barely visible through the trees along the Old Mill Road in Blair the
Sheave Tower stands about 100 metres downstream from the site of a
larger mill which was built by Samuel Bowman in 1846. It takes its name
from the sheave wheel which is described as “a wheel with a grooved rim,
especially one used as a pulley."
A recent restoration put new timbers in its frame and a fresh coat of
oxblood paint on its board and batten walls. The tower looks as it did
when built 124 years ago. During the 1800s, creek water created power
for the larger mill by churning through its turbine. The water then
wastefully trickled downstream. So Bowman built the tower and installed
a turbine to harness the water-power a second time before it flowed
toward the Grand River. As water twisted the turbine under the tower, a
series of gears and shafts spun a large steel wheel (sheave) near the
peaked roof. Like a giant laundry line with a cable looped around two
wheels, water power was transferred from the small tower to the main
mill. It's one of the only surviving examples of auxiliary water power still
standing.
Our latest publication
The Waterloo Region Branch is
proud to announce its latest guide
to research in Waterloo County.
This book is the most
comprehensive “how to” book on
any County in Ontario that we
are aware.
Packed full of tips and
information specific to
researching your Waterloo
County Ancestors.
There are numerous maps,
listings of cemeteries, churches,
libraries, archives and societies.
Perfect for beginners and
advanced family historians,
researching Waterloo Region
families.
To quote from the book “When the first edition of this guide was published
in 1986, it would have been impossible to foresee how genealogy would
change ... This handbook is meant to assist genealogical researchers working
in Waterloo, whether they are resident there or living far away. “

Genealogy Research
Made Easier
Thanks to New Partnership
Toronto, April 30, 2001 - The
Archives of Ontario and the Ontario
Genealogical Society are making it
easier to research family history. As
of April 30, 2001 microfilm copies
of historical Ontario birth, marriage
and death registrations and their
indexes will be available through the
Ontario Genealogical Society.
This partnership responds to an
increased demand for vital statistics
microfilm by libraries, universities,
local genealogy associations and
heritage organizations across the
province, Canada and the United
States.
This venture will provide better
service to customers who need
access to historical vital statistics
through their libraries or local
genealogy associations," says the
Chair of Management Board of
Cabinet David Tsubouchi. "This is
an innovative way for the
government to provide a service and
respond to an increased demand."
"We are excited to provide this
service," says Ken Bird, president of
the Ontario Genealogical Society, a
non-profit corporation representing
the largest organized group of
genealogists in Ontario. "These
statistics are of special interest to
genealogical groups and we look
forward to working with the
government."...
Details on purchasing copies of
the microfilm can be found at the
million individuals whose names
appear in the original ships'
passenger manifests for the Port of
New York from 1892 to 1924.
Origin of the Doersam Surname
DOERSAM is the anglicized spelling of DÖRSAM. The origin of the Dörsam
surname is unknown. Although the name appears in records back to the 16th
century in the Odenwald region of Germany, it is apparently not German nor has
an English translation. H. Bahlow's Deutsches Namenlexikon has been consulted
with negative results. Any additional information about the Doersam surname
would be appreciated.
Background
In the 1840's, six brothers emigrated to Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada from
Beerfelden, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. (Beerfelden is located
approximately 35 kilometers or 22 miles northeast of Heidelberg, Germany.) The
brothers' names were: Johann Jacob, Johann Peter, Johann Georg, Johann Adam,
Valentine and Georg Wihelm. Their parents were Johann Jacob Doersam and
Anna Maria VOLK. Their father who was a master weaver, was born in
Grasellenbach on 25 October 1794. He married Anna Maria ARRAS nee Volk,
a widow, on 1 August 1816 in Beerfelden. Anna Maria was the daughter of
Englebert Volk and Anna Margarete SAUER. She was born on 25 February 1790
in Beerfelden and died on 3 December 1833. Johann Jacob died on 13 March 1871
in Beerfelden.
Three of the brothers settled in Wellesley, one in St. Agatha, one in Heidelberg
and one in Berlin. Subsequent generations moved to the counties of Perth,
Wellington, Grey, Simcoe and Bruce as well as to the western provinces. Some
descendants emigrated to Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska and New York in the
United States.
The site has been generated by a program called GED2HTML and the family
database contains1503 individuals and includes photographs of a number of
people.
Gazetteer of
British Place
Names
The Gazetteer of
British Place
Names is a unique
source of
geographical information. It has
three main functions: it provides the
most exhaustive place name index to
Britain currently available,
containing over 50,000 entries
including commonly accepted
alternative spellings and Welsh and
Gaelic versions. It lists the ancient
or geographical County in which
each place lies and the name of the
most important administrative areas
(i.e. of local government, police,
health authority, region and
lieutenancy) in which each place lies.
It can be found at:
Database
A database
containing the names of places
encountered in the 1891 census. It
has a fairly wide coverage of places,
but does not contain the smaller
ones. You can use it to help locate
places, or to find out the film on
which the 1891 census records can
be found.
Coverage for England, Wales and
the Isle of Man. Therefore there will
be no match for places in Scotland,
Alberta Heritage Digitization
Project
The University of Calgary in
Alberta, Canada has recently
launched a new Web site that
features scanned images of old
newspapers and community history
books. The site had about 107,139
images in the Newspaper collection
and several hundred books as well.
The site contains two different
collections: one for newspapers and
another for books. Once completed,
the Alberta Newspaper collection
will contain all Alberta newspapers,
whether daily, weekly or monthly,
including all special and
supplementary editions from 1880 to
1950. The majority of the collection
is being digitized from microfilm.
For the researcher, this means that
you will have the same access to the
materials as you would if you walked
into a library and used a microfilm
reader to view the newspapers. The
collection is organized by year and
by location. You cannot search for
individual words within the
newspaper collection, only by date or
location of the publisher.
The Local and Alberta Histories
collection consists primarily of paper
books and books on microfiche.
Both general province-wide histories
and histories of specific regions and
communities are available. In all
cases, the text of the volumes has
been processed through optical
character recognition for searching.
Every book has an electronic table of
contents that you can use to jump to
specific chapters and sections of the
book.
The Alberta Heritage Digitization
Project is an excellent on-line
resource for genealogists as well as
for historians. You can access it at
Rosemary Ambrose’s Latest
Newspaper Publication
Rosemary like Frances Hoffman
is doing a great service to
Waterloo Region genealogy in
publishing newspaper
publication. Rosemary’s latest
in her series is the “Dumfries
Reformer notices of Births,
Marriages, Deaths 1866-1870"
The Dumfries Reformer was a
weekly produced newspaper and
went through many changes of
names. Rosemary again has
done a great job extracting
genealogical information from
this important paper. Her
publication is divided into
sections including, Births,
Deaths, Marriages.
It is a must have for any one
searching in North Dumfries and surrounding areas.
The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid is a
pointer database consisting of the
surnames, cemetery name and location of
over 2 Million interments from several
thousand cemeteries, cairns, memorials,
and cenotaphs in Ontario Canada.
Version '98 of The Ontario Cemetery
Finding Aid offers a database of over two
million Ontario cemetery listings.
Version '98 consists of the data from both
OCFA version 5 and OCFA version 6.
This site has just been upgraded to allow
the searching of all current entries. Prior
to upgraded version only version 5 was
searchable, leaving version 6 as a
download text file. This upgrade means
both versions are searchable with an
approximate 1,000,000 additional names
added.
In the fall of 2001 it is expected to have
an additional 30 percent increase..
OCFA is always looking for volunteers to
assist in indexing even more Ontario
cemeteries. If you would like to volunteer
to help this massive database grow please
contact: Ron DeMaray at
ocfa@islandnet.com
The web site contains many Waterloo
Region Branch cemetery entries. Our
branch was one of the first supporters of
this project and over 120,000 Waterloo
County names are searchable.
Loyalist Lists
Transcribed by E. Keith Fitzgerald,
(1984) Editor Mary Beacock Fryer
Ontario Genealogical Society,
Toronto, 2000.
The original publication of the
Loyalist Lists was a transcription of
the “Haldimand Papers” by E. Keith
Fitzgerald, M.D.,Governor Frederick
Haldimand was governor of Quebec
(including what is now Ontario)
from 1777-1784, covering virtually
the entire period of the
Revolutionary War. The Papers
included the returns and roll of the
service men under Haldimand’s
command for this period; General
Return of Refugee Loyalists in the
Province of Quebec, exclusive of
those quartered and residing at the
Upper Posts; Roll of King’s Rangers,
believed to be more commonly
called Roger’s Rangers; Return of
the First Battalion of the King’s
Royal Regiment of New York
(1KRRNY); also known as the
Royal Yorkers; Return of Loyal
Rangers – Company of Pensioners
(more commonly called Jessup’s
Rangers).
The lists are followed by an
alphabetized index by return/roll
number. The publication is
introduced by its own preface as well
as the preface and author’s
introduction of the initial
transcription. These inclusions add
greatly to the reader’s understanding
of the political circumstances of the
times. For those primarily concerned
with the Loyalists who came directly
to central Canada and for all research
and reference collections, this is a
valuable resource restored.
Continuing her long held love of abstracting information from Waterloo Region
newspapers Frances has just published “The Berlin Telegraph and Waterloo County
General Intelligencer, Notices of Births, Marriages and Deaths 1853-1864"
The first issue of the Berlin
Telegraph and Waterloo County
General Intelligencer appeared on
January 7 th , 1853, the same year in
which Waterloo County came into
being. The proprietor, Peter Eby,
simultaneously published the Berlin
German language newspaper Der
Deutsche Canadier.. The
Telegraph’s mandate was to capture
the interest of English speaking
people, providing local and British
news, in addition to items pertenant
to the British Colonies.
The Telegraph was a weekly,
appearing each Friday. Frances’
publication is broken into sections:
Ministers, Pastors and Priest; Births;
Marriages and Deaths. The text of
the of each notice is given, and the
date of the newspaper. A great addition to our ever growing newspaper publications.
Sometimes the best things come of misunderstandings. Waterloo Township 1851 Census
Instructions aren’t always followed to the letter. In 1852
when the 1851 Census was taken, one column was “Age
Next Birthday.” Only the age was to be placed in this
column, but in the 4 th division of Waterloo Township
the census takers misunderstood the intent and placed
not only the age, but the month and day of birth age
well. The resulting information created by this
misunderstanding is printed below. This is the first in
a series of installments of birth dates. In total 1432
people’s births were recorded in this manner. Other
letters of the alphabet will follow in future newsletters.
The information is in the following order:
Captain Thomas Smith & Mary Weaver
First Generation
Jonathan SMITH was born 14 Feb 1715 in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Jonathan married Experience CUSHMAN,
daughter of Ichabod CUSHMAN and Patience HOLMES, on 6 Sep 1737 in Middleborough, , Massachusetts. Experience
was born 12 Jul 1719. They had Thomas SMITH born 17 Apr 1740.
Second Generation
Thomas SMITH (Jonathan) was born 17 Apr 1740 in Middleborough, , Massachusetts. Thomas married Elisheba JONES.
Elisheba was born 12 Jul 1719. They had Captain Thomas SMITH who was born 14 Nov 1765/1767 and died 15 Apr 1850.
Third Generation
Captain Thomas SMITH (Thomas, Jonathan) was born 14 Nov 1765/1767 in Surrey, Vermont. He died 15 Apr 1850 in
Woolwich Township, Waterloo Co., Ontario and was buried in Old Methodist Cemetery, Woolwich Township, Waterloo
co., Ontario.
Thomas was one of the pioneers of Woolwich Township, arriving there about 1806 or 1807, with his wife and children. he
is described as well built, stout, five feet ten inches tall, an interesting character who had had many wonderful experiences,
and who like to tell stories. He was the first squatter on the Crooks estates. He had entered Ontario in 1798 and settled in
Jerseyville.
The Smith family log house was located on the east side of the Grand River opposite the mouth of the Conestogo which here
flows into the Grand from the west. The house was a half mile east of the town of Conestogo, and it stood less than a
hundred feet from the present (1995) Stroh brick farm home. The pioneers hand-hewn log house (with fireplace) was built
28 feet long, 26 feet wide, and two stories high. The ceilings were 6 to 7 feet high, the kitchen was 12 by 24 feet with a large
fireplace; a winding stairway led to the four rooms above. During the long winter evenings the warm cheery fireplace was
the centre of family social life and comfort....
It was here near Conestogo that the Smith's fourth child - Priscilla - was born on 3 January 1808. She is reported as having
the distinction of being the first white child to be born in Woolwich Township however, the records are in disagreement for
it is also reported that a son - Cushman - was born at Conestogo on 11 November 1806.
Thomas Smith fought in the War of 1812. His horse shot out from underneath him, he also shot and afterwards mustered
out as a Captain. Thomas Smith's injury as Lundy's Lane brough him an annual disability pension of 22 pounds 2 shillings,
8 pence and 1farthing about $65 per year.
The Smiths turned their home open to travellers staying in the area. The family lost their title to the land and house due to
irregularities in the land records and after thirty years, took up a new homestead 1/2 mile north of Winterbourne and was
named "The Holmwood Farm". In 1835 Thomas Smith inaugurated a stage coach service from Winterbourne through
Kitchener to Cambridge (Preston) which he operated until his death in 1850.
Thomas married Mary WEAVER. Mary died 1845 in Woolwich Township, Waterloo Co., Ontario and was buried in Old
Methodist Cemetery, Woolwich Township, Waterloo co., Ontario. They had the following children:
i. Alpheus SMITH was born 1802 and died 10 Jan 1842.
ii. Alexander SMITH was born 25 Jan 1804 in , Waterloo Co., Ontario. He died 23 Jul 1865 in Courtland Township, Kent
Co., Michigan.
In 1838 Alexander and Louisa were living on their farm near West Montrose, Ontario. An unnamed source quotes
Louisa "Waterloo, Upper Canada, Feb 22, 1838 Started (via wagon) for the states with David Clemons (brother of
Willard) and wife who brought me to the river (Niagara) by the way of St. Catharines from whence I crossed over to
Lewiston and too the stage to Hartland, Genesee County, New York" She went there to visit her mother Lucinda Morse.
Alexander and Louisa in West Montrose lived in a two story log house and farmed 90 acres fo the Crooks Tract.
In the spring of 1857 Alexander sold his farm and on 10 March, 1858 left for Michigan. With him were his sons Heman,
Oscar, Evander, Ezra, Nathaniel and Freeman. At that time Jasper and Otis were working and away from home.
Henrietta was pregnant. In April Alexander returned to West Montrose to get his wife and daughters Henrietta and Anna
J. He was anxious to get back to Michigan in order to get started with the spring plowing and therefore did not want to
wait until Henrietta had her baby. Otis soon joined. Jasper did not leave Winterbourne until 21 years later when in 1879
he moved to Petoskey, Michigan with his family.
Alexander married Louisa Crosby MORSE, daughter of William G. MORSE and Lucinda STOW, on 26 Sep 1830
in Winterbourne, Waterloo Co., Ontario. Louisa was born 13 Feb 1809 in Hillsboro, , New Hampshire. She died 27 Apr
1879 in Courtland Township, Kent Co., Michigan.
Elgin, , Ontario and was buried in Port Elgin Cemetery, Port Elgin, , Ontario. Cushman Smith was named after an uncle
by the same name who reputedly lived at Lewiston, New York. Cushman lived on several farms in the vicinity of
Winterbourne. In 1874 the family moved to the vicinity of Port Elgin, Ontario. Cushman died at the farm home of his
son Henry near Port Elgin, his wife died at the same place. It is said that Cushman Smith's ancestor came over on the
Mayflower and settled in Vermont (proof can't be found). Cushman married Mary Asia (Marcy Ann) WILBEE,
daughter of Henry WILBEE and Sarah SANDERS, about 1839. Mary was born 11 Jun 1821on Atlantic Ocean. She
died 23 Mar 1899 in near Port Elgin, Ontario and was buried in Port Elgin Cemetery, Port Elgin, Ontario.
iv. Priscilla SMITH was born 3 Jan 1808 in Conestogo, Waterloo Co., Ontario. She died 23 Sep 1890 in Ada, , Michigan.
Priscilla was married to William Sexton a shoemaker. in 1851 they lived in South Dumfries Township, Brant County,
Ontario probably living near Harrisburg. Later they moved to Ada, Michigan.Priscilla married William SEXTON.
William was born 1806 in Leeds Co., Ontario. He died 17 Aug 1872 in Ada, , Michigan.
v. Thomas SMITH was born 1810 in Conestogo, Waterloo Co., Ontario. He died 12 Apr 1843 in Beverly Township,
Wentworth Co., Ontario.
Thomas was a pioneer farmer near Winterbourne. He cleared a plot of land on a farm, about 1 1/2 miles north of
Winterbourne, west of the river road opposite the farm that had long been known as the Millard farm. Thomas sold
(about 1840) his clearing to his brother-in-law Emanual GAUKEL, and with his family went to live in the township
of Beverly. Evidently, at the time of his death his remains were returned to Winterbourne and interred in the nearby
Presbyterian Cemetery. Beside his headstone is a marker for his brother Alpheus who had died a year earlier. Also
adjacent to these headstones is the marker for Willard Cm. Smith. After his death Sarah Ann Hartwell married John
Beverly and had six more children and lived in Woolwich Township, Ontario. Thomas married Sarah Ann
HARTWELL on 23 Oct 1834 in Winterbourne, Waterloo Co., Ontario.
CLEMONS, son of Jabez CLEMONS and Elizabeth BROOKS. Willard was born 1804. He died 1850 in St. George,
, Ontario. Willard was a farmer. Azubah also married (2) Stephen WASHBURN after 1850. Stephen was a farmer near
St. George, Ontario.
