Grafty Garden Centre
Springtime Awakening
Springtime is when all life in
your pond is awakening from
its winter slumber and it will
benefit from some
maintenance before all the
fish, plants and wildlife
become properly active.
The pond will appear clear at
this time of year and it is a
good time to remove all the
leaves and use a pond
vacuum to remove the silt;
this will stop decomposing
matter from reducing oxygen
levels during the summer.
After vacuuming, your pond
will benefit from being
topped up with fresh dechlorinated
water, this will
increase the PH level and
make a healthier
environment for your fish
and wildlife.
If your pump and filter have
not been operating during
the winter, now is a good
time to clean the pump and
replace pre-filters. Remove
any large debris from your
filter but leave a little muck,

as this is effective in starting
the biological action
necessary for good filtration.
This is also the time to
replace filter sponges and
media.
Ultraviolet bulbs need
replacing now, the first four
to five months of the season
is when they will do their
hardest work. A new tube
fitted now will have a 12
month lifespan.
After the winter period your
fish are at their weakest,
leaving them susceptible to
attack from bacteria and
parasites. As a preventative
measure, treat your pond
with a Formalin and
Malachite based medication.

Gold Medalist at the Chelsea Flower
Show.
They have also both had the fortune of
working at Sissinghurst Castle Gardens
over the years and have recently been
working together with Highbanks
Nurseries in Hawkhurst, starting up and
