as illustrated in Figure 5-3, is still the primary method of attack. In this<br />

case each section should normally attempt to bracket the other. The<br />

section with the widest initial lateral separation, or the section that commences<br />

the bracket first, generally has the advantage. Figure 6-1 illustrates<br />

the use of the bracket against the three st<strong>and</strong>ard fighter formations: combat<br />

spread, echelon, <strong>and</strong> trail.<br />

In each case the friendly section (bottom of the figure) begins in combat<br />

spread, since, as explained earlier, this is normally the most effective<br />

pre-engaged formation. At time "1" in the first example a hostile section is<br />

detected approaching head-on, also line abreast. Assuming that none of the<br />
