Hints and Tips
The most important information for using tesa ® adhesive tapes
Certain rules need to be followed when
using self-adhesive tapes.
We also recommend carrying out a
practical test beforehand on the relevant
base owing to the wide range of potential
substrates.
6 rules for excellent results
The adhesive tape must be firmly pressed
down so that good adhesion is attained.
This also prevents the coating from coming
under the adhesive tape at the same time.
Adhesive tapes must be removed after
finishing the work. The application time
should be restricted to the minimum
required.
Remove adhesive tapes after paint drying –
but not after paint through-drying if
possible.
You should peel off adhesive tapes slowly
and evenly. The adhesive tape must not be
torn off the base with an abrupt pull.

Testing the base
Adhesive tapes are used to protect diverse
surfaces / substrates and for delimiting working
areas outdoors and indoors.
Before the bonding, the base must be
evaluated in respect to stability as it can be
damaged if not strong enough when removing
the adhesive tape.

Bonding on glass surfaces
If carrying out protective measures and bonding
on glass surfaces, you need to clarify in
advance whether the glass surface is coated
or uncoated.
Always follow the information of the glass
manufacturer for glass surfaces coated on
the outside and for single pane safety glass
when bonding with self-adhesive protection
films or self-adhesive tapes and when cleaning
the glass.
Even if bonding on inside window panes,
ultraviolet-resistant adhesive tapes must be
used (e.g. tesa ® 4437, 4438 or 4439).

For delicate surfaces such as wallpapers,
stucco profiles or plastering techniques, use
special, gently adhesive masking tapes that
can be removed without subjecting the base
to excessive strain.

TEST
Plastic surfaces
Plastic surfaces can age considerably from
weathering and environmental influences. This
can frequently be seen in PVC windows /
door profiles owing to a brittle, chalking
surface. Conspicuous strips can then occur
when removing the adhesive tape. The
stability should be tested with a transparent
tesafilm in this case. We recommend cleaning
or fully masking these PVC profiles before-
hand so as to avoid strip formation.

Removing adhesive tape
Notes on removing adhesive tapes:
Remove the masking tape at a constant
rate from the paint edge directly after the
paint dries.
Peel-off angle approx. 45°
If the adhesive tape is difficult to remove
as the bonding time outdoors was too
long, peel this off slowly and evenly,
varying the peel-off angle if need be.
It can also sometimes help to heat the
tape with a hairdryer.
Notes on removing adhesive residues:
If a masking tape has not been used correctly,
it can sometimes be the case that residues
remain on the surface or the tack splits when
peeling off. We advise the following procedure
if this is the case:
“Dab” the residues with the adhesive side
of tesa ® tapes to remove them
If the residues cannot be removed fully
on the first attempt, repeat the process
several times. Alternatively, a more
adhesive product can be used for this
(e.g. tesaband ® 4651)

cloth soaked in solvent.
In all cases, we recommend an attempt on a
concealed area to prevent damage to the
base, as paints, rubber and plastics in the
surface can change due to the effect of the
solvent. However, the recommendations given
are not binding owing to the diverse
application conditions.
Please ensure sufficient cross ventilation when
working with solvents. If necessary, wear a
dust mask with A filter. Pay special attention
to the corresponding manufacturer’s
informations and warnings.
Product solution / Measure
Dab the adhesive residues with the sticky side of an adhesive tape,
possibly use a more adhesive product (e.g. tesaband ® 4651) If not successful:
Remove the adhesive residues with cleaning benzine
1. Heat with hairdryer and carefully peel off
Remove residues as described above
2. If not possible: Apply cleaning benzine with brush, allow to work in for at
least 1 minute and carefully scrape off with a plastic spatula
Remove residues as described under 2. with tesa ® 60042 adhesive remover or,
if necessary, universal thinner
