INTRODUCTION<br />

This guide has been prepared by Transport Canada Aviation for the information and<br />

guidance of pilots preparing to apply for flight instructor ratings, and for use as a reference by<br />

qualified flight instructors.<br />

Some of the material in this guide has been derived from discussions with individual flight<br />

instructors and members of Flight Instructor Refresher Courses. The Instrument Flying and<br />

Night Flying Instruction exercises have been changed to include the draft revisions that have<br />

been in use since 1990 and 1994 respectively.<br />

Part I —<br />

A brief explanation of the content of the various parts in this guide is as follows:<br />

Learning and Learning Factors<br />

Part II —<br />

The techniques to be used by instructors when conducting ground school training,<br />

pre-flight and post-flight briefings, and the air exercises.<br />

The Ground and Air Instruction Syllabus<br />

This part outlines the purpose of each exercise, the essential background knowledge a<br />

student must possess before air instruction of the exercise commences, advice to<br />

instructors, and a step by step procedure for the instructor to follow when carrying out the<br />

air instruction.<br />

Part III —<br />

Lesson Plans<br />

This part provides for a step by step progression of learning, with provision for regular<br />

review and evaluation at prescribed stages of learning.<br />

Part IV —<br />

Typical Questions<br />

A list of suggested questions has been prepared as a guide to instructors in developing<br />

their own questions to suit the temperament and background of individual students.<br />

Attachment —<br />

The form “Instructor’s Training Record While Under Direct Supervision” has been included<br />

with this guide and may be reproduced as required.
