“I’ve been playing
streetball since I was
a little kid, and even
when there weren’t
tournaments, I’d play
outside in the summer.
We worked our way up
through the divisions
until we got to the
unlimited level, and
that’s when The Young
Ones came up. The Young
Ones was my team, and
it’s the home team at
Dyckman. The first was
Dominican Power, but I
decided to play with
The Young Ones because
that’s where I grew
up, and that’s where
I started... When I
play [at Dyckman Park],
the crowd — every time
they expect something.
It’s like, ‘Oh Adris
is playing, something
gonna happen.’ I can’t
come to the game here
and just chill. I can’t.
‘Cause the other guy
on the other team is
coming at ME. Every
time I come, I have
to perform. I have to
perform every time.
It’s a lot of pressure,
but at the same time I
like that pressure.”

A14 Al:wa:ys On SUMMER 2011
By ARON PHILLIPS
Having a New York state of mind
can’t be personified in a song. In the
summer, it’s a way of life. If you’re
born an athlete, you’ll die one, and
summer hoops in NYC is a rite of
passage. You may play professionally,
but here you got next. Make it take
it. Be sure to lace your sneaks. The
summer is where you make a name
for yourself. And don’t get it twisted:
Names aren’t given, they’re earned.
NYC is a place where a rip is just
as lauded as a dunk. A place where
games don’t stop until the lights go
out or someone throws the ball in the
river. NYC is a place that is always
on. And although you might actually
be playing in Harlem, Greenwich
Village or the Lower East Side,
know that the world is watching. In
the era of social media and instant
gratification, know that your reach is
farther than ever. But at the same time,
you can’t tweet an ankle-breaking
crossover; you can’t become a fan of
a devastating poster dunk; and you
sure as hell can’t upload, download
or stream the move I’m about to pull
on you. (Just remember that you were
warned.) And the only way you’re
going to truly experience the moment
is to be there.
Someone once told me that when
he played at Rucker, it was the best
atmosphere he’d ever played in. And
this is a guy that played college ball in
front of almost 35,000 people a night
and won a national championship.
This is a guy who plays his home
games at The World’s Most Famous
Arena. But this is a guy born in BK
and raised in B-More that knows the
salience of playing inside the gates.
Each summer there is a book
written with sweat and blood. Kill
or be killed. Know what you’re
up against now or suffer the
consequences later. And while you
can’t find this book in the library,
know that it exists. Let’s call it the
Asphalt Chronicles. Stories written
between the lines that pervade city
blocks and invade your dreams
at night. Stories that you tell over
drinks and barbecues. Stories that
would even light a fire under an ice
coffee. And while at the end of the
day you might not make it on the
TV, the street knows. And that’s all
that matters.

“Streetball is eight
weeks of intense
street basketball,
and once you start,
you play non-stop,
sometimes twice a
day. It’s all
different teams,
different cultures,
and depending on
the leagues you’re
playing, it’s a whole
different loop.
Streetball is about
practicing always,
and always being on
your game... Always
on is about always
being ready. No days
