he following youth have been named <strong>USTA</strong><br />
Pacifi c Northwest (<strong>USTA</strong>/PNW) Section<br />
winners for their age division in the 2009 Arthur<br />
Ashe Essay Contest. National Junior Tennis and<br />
Learning (NJTL) participants were required<br />
to write an essay about what the Arthur Ashe<br />
quote, “From what we get, we make a living;<br />
what we give, however, makes a life,” means<br />
to them in 300 words or less. Winners will be<br />
recognized with a special plaque and certifi cate<br />
to <strong>com</strong>memorate their achievement.<br />

2009 <strong>USTA</strong> Campus Championship<br />
Ducks, Vikings and SFU “Trick-and-Treat” their<br />
way to national championship<br />
his past Halloween weekend, 21 teams representing<br />
13 college tennis clubs converged on Tualatin Hills<br />
Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore., for the ninth annual<br />
<strong>USTA</strong> Campus Championship – Pacific Northwest where<br />
they battled for the right to advance to the <strong>USTA</strong> National<br />
Campus Championships.<br />
In the end, the University of Oregon (U of O) Ducks<br />
defeated the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Clan 28-16<br />
to take top honors. The Western Washington University<br />
(WWU) Vikings knocked off the University of Washington<br />
Huskies for third place.<br />
As the top three finishers, U of O, SFU and WWU earned<br />
a bid into the <strong>USTA</strong> National Campus Championship that<br />
will be held in April 2010 in Surprise, Ariz., where they will<br />
<strong>com</strong>pete for the national title.<br />
Other schools that <strong>com</strong>peted in the 2009 <strong>USTA</strong> Campus<br />
The University of Oregon<br />
won the 2009 <strong>USTA</strong> Campus<br />
Championship – Pacifi c<br />
Northwest and will <strong>com</strong>pete<br />
for a national championship<br />
in April 2010.<br />
Championship – Pacific Northwest include University of<br />
Victoria, University of British Columbia, Eastern Washington<br />
University, Central Washington University, Portland State<br />
University, Linfield College, Oregon State University, and<br />
Whitman College. In all, nearly 200 players participated.<br />
On the lighter side, the section’s campus championship<br />
also featured a costume contest to celebrate Halloween.<br />
Entries including such characters as a knight, fireman,<br />
wizard, lion, butterfly, a french kiss, Hugh Hefner, Maria<br />
Sharapova, the Grim Reaper, and many more. After final<br />
judging, the third prize went to a pilot, runner-up went<br />
to a pair dressed as swing dancers and the grand prize<br />
went to Lizzy Schiller of Whitman College who dressed<br />
as Snow White. Although the Seven Dwarfs who ac<strong>com</strong>panied<br />
Ms. Schiller were impressive, they did not place<br />
in the top three. �
