JUNEAU REPORT<br />

Another great tennis<br />
season for JDHS<br />
Lead by head coach Amy Skillbred, assistant<br />
Kurt Dzinich and volunteer coach Mike McClellan,<br />
the high school tennis season fi nished with<br />
another successful campaign for Juneau-Douglas<br />
High School (JDHS).<br />
With over 40 players on the team, their season<br />
featured intersquad matches, organized match<br />
play against local adult players and the fi rst<br />
ever Alaska State Activities Association (ASAA)<br />
Region V Tennis Tournament. The intergenerational<br />
matches proved to be a great success as<br />
the format was well received by participants and<br />
provided a great opportunity to build bridges<br />
between Juneau’s junior and adult players.<br />
The JDHS Crimson Bears squad fi nished the<br />
season with one Alaska State Mixed Doubles title<br />
captured by Brian Vandor and Laurel Messerschmidt,<br />
and a fi nalist in boys’ doubles thanks to<br />
the efforts of Aaron Cohen and Nathan Graves.<br />
JDHS and JTA host<br />
fundraiser tournament<br />
The Juneau Tennis Association (JTA) and JDHS<br />
Tennis team hosted an action-packed tournament<br />
that drew players from Juneau and their<br />
Canadian counterparts in Whitehorse, Yukon.<br />
The tournament helped raise over $1200 and<br />
featured junior and adult doubles divisions that<br />
totaled over 80 participants.<br />
In addition to all the tennis action, JDHS players<br />
and their families hosted a Mexican lunch<br />
prepared by Gerry Donohoe. Many thanks to<br />
tournament organizers and volunteers Vicki<br />
Wilcox, Margie Vandor, Mona Yarnall, Coach<br />
Skilbred, Assistant Coach Dzinich, and junior<br />
tournament directors and JDHS tennis players<br />
Rachel Donohoe, Cohen, Graves, Vandor, and<br />
Messerschmidt.<br />
PTR Workshop in<br />
Anchorage<br />
Colin Gillam and the Alaska Club hosted<br />
Steve Keller and the Professional Tennis Registry<br />
(PTR) Certifi cation workshop. The workshop,<br />
attended by 17 enthusiastic people from Anchorage,<br />
Fairbanks and Juneau, was designed to<br />
provide teaching fundamentals including proper<br />
biomechanics of strokes, error detection and corrective<br />
techniques.<br />

of players and instruction in the state.<br />
Tennis at the Mall �<br />
JRC – Alaska Club recently participated<br />
in a <strong>com</strong>munity health fair at<br />
the Nugget Mall in Juneau. The Alaska<br />
Club booth included a tennis court<br />
utilizing QuickStart Tennis equipment<br />
and allowed participants to get a little<br />
taste of some tennis action.<br />
FAIRBANKS REPORT<br />

Middle and high school<br />
tennis news<br />
The middle and high school tennis seasons<br />
enjoyed a great fi nish in the Interior of Alaska.<br />
The Fairbanks Tennis Association (FTA) enrolled 26<br />
middle school students in the seven-week tennis<br />
program under the able coaching of Brian Smith<br />
and Chris Poole. A fi nal celebration was held in<br />
the Mary Siah Recreation Center with pizza, prizes<br />
and participant certifi cates for each player.<br />
Six high school tennis teams <strong>com</strong>peted in the<br />
ASAA Region IV tournament including Ben Eielson,<br />
Hutchison, Lathrop, Monroe, North Pole and<br />
West Valley, totaling 101 tennis players. Lathrop<br />
captured the regular season title.<br />
The Interior wel<strong>com</strong>ed new high school coaches<br />
Jerry Jacobs, Amber Harger, Carol Woodard and<br />
Patti Boertje and was happy to wel<strong>com</strong>e back<br />
returning coaches Milo Griffi n, Debbie Miller<br />
and Bobby Trujillo.<br />

The JRC hosted a tennis booth during a<br />
health and fi tness fair held at the Nugget<br />
Mall in Juneau.<br />
“FUN-Raiser”<br />
The FTA held their second annual “FUN-Raiser”<br />
this fall at Pikes Waterfront Lodge in Fairbanks.<br />
This fun-fi lled evening included a Texas Hold’em<br />
tournament with a “Learn to Play” table and a<br />
Ping Pong tournament. Numerous door prizes<br />
were distributed, bringing much interest and<br />
excitement. The $1000 cash grand prize was won<br />
by Paula Ruckhaus. The auction included a variety<br />
of items such as a Holland America Cruise to<br />
the Caribbean or Mexico, Pacifi c Life Open Box<br />
Seat tickets, authentic Alaskan artwork, dinner at<br />
local restaurants, tennis racquets and bags, and<br />
delicious desserts.<br />
In total, the FUN-Raiser netted $7000. Ten<br />
percent of the proceeds will be designated toward<br />
the FTA Endowment Fund. The money raised will<br />
also be used to support the many programs FTA<br />
makes available to its <strong>com</strong>munity. These programs<br />
include summer tennis programs for children and<br />
adults, elementary after-school tennis, and the<br />
middle and high school tennis programs.<br />

<strong>USTA</strong> and <strong>USTA</strong> Pacifi c Northwest (<strong>USTA</strong>/PNW).<br />
During her time served as <strong>USTA</strong>/PNW Vice Presi-<br />
ddent<br />
of Alaska, Ramras helped formulate the fi rst<br />
ooffi<br />
cial Alaska State High School Tennis Champion-<br />
sship<br />
which boasted participation from four regions<br />
within the ASAA. Ramras was also front and center<br />
on the development of all FTA summer programs<br />
including the recruitment of visiting tennis professionals<br />
Sean Frost, Todd Nelson, Tom Fey, Marcin<br />
Rozpedski and Cathy Thomas.<br />
The <strong>USTA</strong> recognized Ramras’ contributions to<br />
the sport by presenting her with the prestigious Eve<br />
Kraft Community Service Award. She now serves as<br />
the <strong>USTA</strong>/PNW President of the Board of Directors.<br />
While Ramras’ involvement in that position is more<br />
regional in scope, she maintains her enthusiasm for<br />
tennis in Alaska.<br />
2009 Alaska State HS Tennis<br />
Championship<br />
The third annual Alaska State High School Tennis<br />
Tournament was a rousing success. On October 9-10,<br />
16 teams from Anchorage, Juneau, Kodiak and the<br />
Interior battled for team and individual honors on<br />
the indoor courts of the Alaska Club North and East.<br />
South Anchorage High School won its fi rst state<br />
championship beating two-time champions West<br />
Anchorage in dramatic fashion. The team title came<br />
down to the last match of the tournament. With<br />
hundreds of people watching and the team title on<br />
