LEAGUE RATINGS 2009 USTA League Year-end Ratings and Appeals Results from USTA Sanctioned tournament matches have not been used to generate your 2009 year-end rating. We have been notified by the USTA that approximately 93,000 players out of 311,000 have been adjusted upwards in the 2009 year-end ratings. The reason for this is to better conform with the General and Experienced Player Guidelines. What this means for many players who were at the top of their level is that they most likely will find themselves moved up to the next level. If you have been moved up, take the time to look through the ratings because many of your teammates may have been moved up as well. If that is the case, then it will allow you to remain on the same team and continue to enjoy the friendships. The following information was provided to us by the USTA and will give you an idea with regards to the amount of movement at the various levels: The National Oversight Group (NOG) is charged with maintaining the integrity of the National Tennis Rating Program. The nationwide movement of a higher percentage of players upward this year reflects the concerns of NOG, the Observers and many others who are staff, volunteers, team captains and players that the system was in need of adjustment. Additionally, it was noted through player concerns raised in survey work. A growing disconnect was seen between the standards used in the Self Rating guidelines and the actual characteristics of players on court at various levels. The table below shows the movement of players up and down from their previous rating levels. Players will continue to have compatible and competitive matches although many will now be playing at a different level. Players will also find that there will be far less ability to appeal NTRP ratings successfully based on current appeal guidelines. On the right, click on “Find a Rating”. When the “Find a Rating” page appears, type in your USTA number ONLY. Your rating will appear. You will be asked if you would like to appeal your rating. If yes, click on Appeal and follow the instructions and if accepted then your appeal will be granted. If not then it will be denied and the reason for the denial will be given at this time. Appeal changes do NOT automatically change on the roster. If your appeal is granted and you have already registered for a team but have not played a match for that team, contact ustaappeals@aol.com immediately. Provide your name, USTA number, your team number, with the request that the rating be changed on your roster. Captains: Please do not appeal on behalf of your players. If your appeal is denied, you have no further appeal unless you qualify for filing a medical appeal. Once appeals are reviewed and acted upon, the final ratings will be updated in the USTA National database (as shown in “Find a Rating” in Tennis Link) and thus Tennis Times should not be referred to as the final authority on ratings. Only the USTA National ratings as viewed on TennisLink will reflect the current year-end and appealed ratings. Submitting a Medical Appeal In order to submit a medical appeal, you must go to the USTA Pacific Northwest website at www.pnw.usta.com to complete the official USTA Medical Appeal form as wells as the Attending Physicians form. To access these forms, scroll over ‘League Tennis’ in the lefthand menu and click on ‘Appeals’. Email the form to sheilab@pnw.usta.com. You may also fax to (425) 337-0119 or mail to: Sheila Banks, 2000 Village Green Dr #24, Mill Creek, WA 98012. It is IMPORTANT to review all requirements regarding the Medical Appeal process as no appeal will be processed until all the forms and requirements are complete. All medical appeals MUST be accompanied by a letter from your attending physician, stating the date the injury/illness occurred, nature of your injury/illness, your prognosis and treatment rendered, and whether the injury/illness is permanently disabling. The review of a medical appeal may take several weeks to process. Self-Rate Appeals Players appealing a self-rate UP must follow the procedures as outlined above under “Computer Rating Appeals”. If you want to lower your self-rating ONLY and you did not appeal online during the self-rating process, you may do the following: Note: This procedure applies to all players except those registering for any Mixed Doubles league and Super Senior league. Those players must contact ustaappeals@aol.com. 1. Go to http://tennislink.usta.com/leagues/ and click on “Register for a Team”. 2. Enter your team number. 3. Submit the form to ustaappeals@aol.com. 4. Self-rate committee will review the form and notify player within five days. If your self-rate appeal is GRANTED and you have registered on a team but not played a match, please contact ustaappeals@aol.com immediately and provide your name, USTA number and team number with the request that the rating be changed on your roster.
