(Hensman Park) edged out Macstobhard’s (Blue Gum Park) Zach Itzstein in a tie-break. The level of play was exceptional with 2 serving powerhouses going head to head. After Armstrong took the first set (4-2) Itzstein appeared to ‘acclimatise’ to Armstrong’s fierce serve in the 2 nd , launching a number of blistering passing shots deep into the court to level the scores(2- 4) in the second. It was however Armstrong who managed to overpower a very gallant Itzstein, closing it down in a tie-break (7-3). Ian Hutchison Real Estate went on to win the tie, 4 rubbers to 2. Gordon Davies Real Estate v Greenwich Giants Undefeated Gordon Davies Real Estate (Peppermint Grove) had a shaky start to their round 4 campaign, with Brenton Bacon dropping the 1 st rubber against an unforgettable display from Andrew Roberts of the Greenwich Giants (2-4) (3-4). Roberts (who has been absent for the past 2 weeks of play) dominated the court with his electrifying forehand and extensive court coverage. Despite the ideal start for the Giants, this was the first and last match they would claim for the evening. Gordon Davies Real Estate steamrolling through the field undefeated. Tennis Only v ERM Power In the most anticipated match of the round, Tennis Only (Sorrento) took on ERM Power (Wembley Downs). ERM Power’s Charles Williams performing a gallant comeback after losing the first set to love, as he upset Hayden Gibson in a tie-break, taking the match (0-4) (4-2) (7-5). After the first 4 singles matches were played the scores were levelled at 2 rubbers a piece. Both teams went on to win a doubles match each before a count back was performed. Tennis Only were determined victorious at the end of the night, winning 3-8-42 to 3-4-31. The final 2 rounds are sure to be ecstatic tennis with 5 out of the 6 men’s teams still eligible to make the finals with the Women’s championship still up for grabs. The finalists of both the Men’s and Women’s ties will then head to the 2012 Australian Open to play off against South Australia and Victoria in the NTL Finals. Jim Davies Elected to the Tennis Australia Board Tennis West Board Member Jim Davies was elected to the Tennis Australia Board in late October. Jim has been an integral part of the Tennis West Board and has been involved at many different levels of the game including: • An active midweek pennant player; • President of Dalkeith Tennis Club; • Tennis West Board Member; • Assisted Tennis Australia with the successful appointment of the new Tennis Australia Marketing Director, Brigette McGuire; • An active participant in Member Association strategic forums. “We are delighted to have Jim Davies elected for the Tennis Australia Board. He has brought a lot to the Tennis West Board and we look forward to him continuing to contribute a great deal to tennis in Western Australia”. Dean Williams, Tennis West President. Women in Tennis Foundation Cup & D’Arcy Slater Cup The 2011 Women in Tennis Foundation Cup was this year held at the Busselton Tennis Club from the 6-8 October. 13 teams from 8 different country zones all made the trip to Busselton to take part in the highly anticipated tournament. Despite a few scattered showers the tournament was a huge success, with the girls participating in plenty of tennis and receiving lots of opportunity to earn points for their team. “South West A” were the eventual winners of the tournament, edging out their closest competitors, “Great Southern A” by 20 points. A huge thank you must go to the Busselton Tennis Club who were the perfect host venue for the tournament – the courts were in fantastic condition, and the club and its members made for a welcoming and enjoyable home-away-from-home for the girls and their families. The 4 semi-finalists from the event have been invited to take part in the 2012 Interstate Foundation Cup which will take place in Sydney in January. The following girls will be representing WA: 1. Hayley McApline (Moore Districts) 2. Madeline Muller-Hughes (South West) 3. Rachelle Maestre (Midwest) 4. Sophie Tuckett (Great Southern) The 2011 D’Arcy Slater Cup took place immediately following the Women in Tennis Foundation Cup from October 9-11. Bunbury Tennis Club made their debut in hosting this tournament, and did a fantastic job of doing so! Thanks to the tireless hours of the committee and numerous volunteers, the tennis courts were in picture-perfect condition, and the ladies in the kitchen did a fantastic job of feeding over 80 hungry boys each day! South West A again took the honours in the teams event, edging out 15 other teams to claim the D’Arcy Slater Cup. Central Districts A put in a valiant effort to claim the Runner-up title. The 4 semi-finalists from this event will also make the trip to Sydney in January to participate in the Interstate Foundation Cup. The following boys will be representing WA: 1.
