Initial Situation Slope/ Embankment Stabilisation 

The particular risk of the road-user at the county road K 1897 in the area of a blind railway 

crossing induced the authorities in the concerning section of the road to the new 

construction of the street with an railway underpass. 

The original planning of the responsible road construction office intended a gabion retaining 

wall with backfill material for the stabilisation of the partially very steep slope. This method 

could be described for this project as very labour-extensive and costly. 

Hence, within the scope of the tendering procedure an alternative proposal was made by 

the later main contractor. 

Therefore, the permanent stabilisation of the slope should take place by use of the Krismer 

System® which is anchored by means of rock- and earth nails with the subjacent subsoil. 

Besides, the necessary stabilisation of the excavation pit can be carried out by installation of 

the system after digging off the slope in the respective construction stage. Slope rubble areas 

should be stabilised with shotcrete. 

This alternative proposal reached, in the end, from technical as well as economic points of 

view for the execution.

Starting from top down the following system structure was chosen: 

- 3-5 cm layer of top soil (thereof ~1-2 cm about the upper edge of the J.K.S. panels) 

- Krismer System®: three-dimensional steel grid panel (J.K.S. panel), type J.K.S. A02-80|1,5-FEZ, 

height = 8 cm, fixed with special T-steel nails (with welded-on hook and point) and 

strengthened with hot-dip galvanised distribution rods Ø 10 mm and Ø 12 mm, type 

R10/2500 or R12/2500 

- gravel filling (into the J.K.S. panels): grain size 32/60 mm, cubature 6 m³/100 m² 

Anchorage of the shotcrete layer (in slope rubble areas): 

- rock nails, type GEWI 25, length = 3-5 m 








Project Realisation Slope/ Embankment Stabilisation 

After finishing the first construction stage, concerning the earthworks, the slope surface had to 

be prepared for the installation of the Krismer System®. 

First of all, slope rubble areas were stabilised with shotcrete combined with GEWI anchors 

(length = 5 m). Afterwards the whole slope surface became cleaned and uneven terrains 

were filled-up. 

Then it was begun with the step-by-step installation of the Krismer System®. 

For this the three-dimensional J.K.S. panels were laid on the slope surface at an angle 

crosswise to the fall line. The panels are joined both longitudinally and laterally, by 

overlapping them. These joints are secured with rust-free wire binding loops. 

The installation took place from above in three height steps (vertical height in each case 

approx. 2-3 m).

For the rise of the compound effect of the Krismer System®, distribution rods were horizontally 

inserted consecutively in the J.K.S. panels. 

Furthermore, the complete system structure had to be integrated sufficient into the border 

zones. 








The steady anchorage of the system with the subsoil took place by means of special T-steel 

nails. 

For the installation of the T-Steel nails, holes had to be pre-drilled on account of the given 

underground conditions (rock). For this a hand-operated drill was used. Then the nails were 

rammed by use of a pneumatic hammer into the borehole filled with cement mortar. 

There, where the slope was stabilised with shotcrete combined with GEWI anchors (fig. 3) the 

anchor heads were connected with the J.K.S. panels by means of special connectingelements.

After installation of the J.K.S. panels they were filled with gravel (grain size 32/60 mm). These 

works were carried out with an excavator, beginning from the top of slope (fig. 4). 

A surface drainage was formed thereby which enables to lead away the joint water.

The gravel which was filled up to about half a height of the three dimensional J.K.S. panels 

allows an optimum interconnection with the later inserted top soil and the steel structure.

Afterwards the top soil was filled into the J.K.S. panels using the dry spraying method.

The spraying machine was filled with dry, prepared top soil which is carried with compressed 

air through the conveyor tubes and is mixed at the nozzle with the necessary amount of 

water. 

The resultant soil-water mixture is blown by means of compressed air into the J.K.S. panels, is 

compressed thereby and remains adhere in this manner on a continuing basis.

The following effects could be achieved as a verifiable result of this construction measure:: 

• the slope was stabilised very well 

• Protection of the jointed rock from damages by effects of the weather (e.g., frost) 

• the gravel-filling forms a suitable surface drainage to lead away the joint water 

• the stabilised layer of top soil forms the base for a lasting growth 

• an optically perfect slope surface was constructed in the required inclination 

• compared to, e.g., retaining structures, huge cost savings could be achieved by the 

application of the Krismer System®
