Initial Situ<strong>at</strong>ion Slope/ Embankment Stabilis<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

To maintain a secure use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> street <strong>the</strong> occurring rain and snow w<strong>at</strong>er is drained <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong><br />

street through a small l<strong>at</strong>eral inclin<strong>at</strong>ion into parallel running longitudinal draining facilities on<br />

<strong>the</strong> side, most <strong>of</strong>ten draining troughs or spherical shell channels.<br />

Coming from st<strong>at</strong>utory regul<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er has to be brought back again into <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />

circle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er. Mostly this happens immedi<strong>at</strong>ely where possible through l<strong>at</strong>erally passing<br />

<strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er out into <strong>the</strong> surrounding terrain. In <strong>the</strong> surrounding terrain <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er should ooze<br />

away.<br />

On account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> global clim<strong>at</strong>e changes and <strong>the</strong> increase <strong>of</strong> extreme we<strong>at</strong>her caprioles<br />

conditioned <strong>the</strong>reby, <strong>the</strong> frequency and amplitude <strong>of</strong> extreme rain and snow fall incidents<br />

has strongly increased in wide parts <strong>of</strong> Europe during <strong>the</strong> past years. Also <strong>the</strong> street draining<br />

facilities are immedi<strong>at</strong>ely affected <strong>of</strong> this. They can not ooze away <strong>the</strong> big quantities <strong>of</strong> rain<br />

and snow w<strong>at</strong>er in <strong>the</strong> surrounding terrain without causing damages as initially planed.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> here mentioned project „Traunufer/ Wels“ <strong>the</strong> draining <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er from <strong>the</strong> street into<br />

<strong>the</strong> surrounding wooded area caused an always deeper eroding trench because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> big<br />

quantity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> surface w<strong>at</strong>er.<br />

The terrain steeply sloping from <strong>the</strong> country road to <strong>the</strong> river Traun was eroded on a length <strong>of</strong><br />

117m up to a depth <strong>of</strong> 1.50 m. Half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> width <strong>of</strong> a forest road crossing this section was<br />

swept away by <strong>the</strong> erosion. In <strong>the</strong> sequel <strong>the</strong> forest road was unusable for <strong>the</strong> managing <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> forest.<br />

In this area near Wels <strong>the</strong> river Traun is used for <strong>the</strong> energy production and <strong>the</strong>refore it is<br />

dammed up to a river power st<strong>at</strong>ion. Through <strong>the</strong> erosion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> embankment <strong>the</strong> dammed<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>of</strong>ten became muddy. Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> washed in fine sediments a damage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

power st<strong>at</strong>ion equipment could not longer be excluded.<br />

Central setting <strong>of</strong> task for <strong>the</strong> reconstructing work was to elimin<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> damage in form <strong>of</strong> a<br />

very deep erosion trench, to make <strong>the</strong> forest road usable again and to construct a stable<br />

channel for <strong>the</strong> future drainage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> street w<strong>at</strong>er.<br />

The first design intended to build a coursed rock fill out <strong>of</strong> coarse river stones which would<br />

have had a single weight <strong>of</strong> approx. 1.000 up to 2.000 kg per piece.<br />

The coursed rock fill should start <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river Traun and should <strong>at</strong> least be built up<br />

to <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest road. For <strong>the</strong> section above <strong>the</strong> forest road <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> a<br />

draining pipe was planed which should have drained <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> street w<strong>at</strong>er into <strong>the</strong> coursed<br />

rock fill.<br />

This variant for <strong>the</strong> project was too expensive and too troublesome because <strong>of</strong> some<br />

problems with <strong>the</strong> basement for <strong>the</strong> coursed rock filling, <strong>the</strong> troublesome and expensive<br />

transport<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stones to <strong>the</strong> constructing site (entry way was only possible on <strong>the</strong> little<br />

bearing forest road) and <strong>the</strong> technically very troublesome install<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> piping line in <strong>the</strong><br />

steep slope.<br />

Additionally <strong>the</strong> whole stabilis<strong>at</strong>ion work should be done without severe affects on and<br />

constant injuries to <strong>the</strong> landscape because <strong>the</strong> terrain is very good seen and is used as close<br />

recre<strong>at</strong>ion area.<br />

The mentioned situ<strong>at</strong>ion induced <strong>the</strong> constructing company Felbermayr to give a special<br />

constructing suggestion using <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krismer</strong>® System.<br />

Constructing suggestion with <strong>Krismer</strong>® System<br />

- Extension <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> existing erosion trench to a drainage trench, width <strong>at</strong> least 0.60 m up to<br />

1.20m, depth <strong>at</strong> least 1.0 m to 1.50 m;<br />

- Filling up <strong>the</strong> drainage trench with easy to deliver stone m<strong>at</strong>erial in stone sizes up to maximal<br />

32 mm to 60 mm;<br />

- Stabilising <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> draining body with three-dimensional steel l<strong>at</strong>tice m<strong>at</strong>s, anchored with <strong>the</strong><br />

underground with earth nails; forming a terrain trough (opening width approx. 6 m) and<br />

- stabilising <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole trough with <strong>Krismer</strong>® System as additional possible draining facility for<br />

<strong>the</strong> street w<strong>at</strong>er in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> a flood.<br />

- Applying humus and greening <strong>of</strong> all parts which are not permanently overflowed with w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

guaranties a perfect reintegr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction work into <strong>the</strong> surrounding n<strong>at</strong>ural river<br />

landscape.<br />

The construction method drainage-and channel-constructing with “<strong>Krismer</strong>® System” as<br />

presented was proved to meet all <strong>the</strong>se requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stabiliz<strong>at</strong>ion in a perfect way,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore this method was executed.<br />

The seeding was done with mineralogical and also with biological long-term-fertilizer. By<br />

doing this <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> plants should be acceler<strong>at</strong>ed and a fast and thick growing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Embankment<br />

Result Slope/<br />

In <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> channel lining on <strong>the</strong> bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river Traun <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krismer</strong>® System was<br />

carried out to stabilise <strong>the</strong> terrain.<br />

As results <strong>of</strong> this construction project <strong>the</strong> following provable effects could be achieved:<br />

• long-lasting protection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bank surface against all types <strong>of</strong> erosion<br />

• <strong>the</strong> deep reaching compound effect and <strong>the</strong> stable construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three-dimensional<br />

steel l<strong>at</strong>tice panels oppose optimally <strong>the</strong> tractive force <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

• surface securing stays w<strong>at</strong>er permeable and prevents an excessive build up <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flow<br />

pressure<br />

• <strong>the</strong> stone filling <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drainage trench decisively reduces <strong>the</strong> r<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> flow<br />

• except <strong>the</strong> installed system nails no excessive basements were necessary<br />

• <strong>the</strong> construction is insensitive for consolid<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsoil (= flexible construction)<br />

• all system components including <strong>the</strong> filling m<strong>at</strong>erial can be transported to <strong>the</strong> constructing<br />

site in <strong>the</strong> steep slope very easily<br />

• <strong>the</strong> stabilised top soil layer forms <strong>the</strong> basis for a long-lasting growing <strong>of</strong> plants<br />

• Using <strong>the</strong> <strong>Krismer</strong>® System enabled us to optimally stabilise <strong>the</strong> channel in a steep slope<br />

with an inclin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> 40°. Using this ecologically desirable, plant-able construction<br />

valuable n<strong>at</strong>ural landscape could be saved or a once devast<strong>at</strong>ed surface could be recultiv<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

again.<br />
