Foley was co-founded by the 

parishes of Guardian Angels, 

Clawson, and St. Dennis, Royal 

Oak and named in honor of 

Bishop John Samuel Foley, the 

fourth Bishop to lead the Catholic 

Diocese of Detroit (1888 – 1918).

A Message from the President 

A Future Filled With Hope 

At the end of this school year Bishop Foley graduated the Class 

of 2010, the 41st graduating class since our first graduates 

received their BFC diploma in 1969. 

Along with our graduated seniors we gave an honorary 

diploma to Mrs. Joanne Molnar who is retiring after 22 years of 

dedicated service to BFCHS. Mrs. Molnar started out teaching 

in our English Department. For the past number of years Mrs. 

Molnar served in Administration as our Assistant Principal and 

over these past five years as Principal. Mrs. Molnar brought 

tremendous gifts to BFC and has served us well as Principal. I 

am most grateful for the leadership that she has given to Bishop 

Foley over these many years. Her work and ministry among 

us has strengthened our school and has prepared us well for 

the future. She has been a “good and faithful servant” and I am 

most grateful for her untiring dedication. I know that you join me 

in wishing her God’s blessings in her retirement. 

I am happy to announce that we have hired a new principal, 

Ms. Patricia Domagala. Ms. Domagala comes to us with a solid 

educational background and over 

30 years of experience in Catholic 

Education throughout the Archdiocese 

of Detroit. Ms. Domagala has her 

undergraduate degree from Eastern 

Michigan and her Master of Arts in 

Catholic School Leadership from 

Madonna University. Ms. Domagala 

began her teaching ministry at Our 

Lady Help of Christians in Detroit. 

From there she went on to St. Florian 

High School in Hamtramck where she 

spent 19 years as teacher, athletic 

director and finally, principal. 

When St. Florian and Bishop 

Gallagher merged to form the new 

Trinity High, Ms. Domagala was named as co-principal. For the 

last five years she has served as principal of St. Isaac Jogues 

Elementary in St. Clair Shores. Ms. Domagala has a passion for 

high school students and is well respected in the education field 

in the Archdiocese of Detroit. As a life-long Catholic educator, 

and a member of St. Florian Parish, Ms. Domagala brings a 

strong Catholic Christian commitment to her role and will lead 

our students and family in a deeper relationship with the Lord 

and the Church. 

I echo the search committee’s approval and believe that I have 

hired the best principal to meet our needs, and one who will 

continue our program of excellence as we plan for a “future

filled with hope.” I believe that as 

you come to know her you will 

share the excitement that we feel 

for the next school year and well 

into the future. I am most grateful 

to the search committee for the 

outstanding job they did in assisting 

me in finding a new principal.

Ms. Domagala will work closely 

with me and Mr. Haley, who has 

been promoted from Dean of 

Academic Affairs to Assistant Principal for the coming school 

year. Mr. Haley recently finished his Masters Degree in 

Educational Leadership from Madonna University. I have every 

confidence in the leadership of both of these dedicated and 

capable individuals. I hope that you share the excitement that all 

of us have for the next school year and beyond. 

Our freshman enrollment has increased for the upcoming 

school year. There is a great 

spirit in the school. We will be 

forming a Campus Ministry Team, 

composed of students, to assist 

the Campus Minister in the overall 

spiritual atmosphere of our school 

environment. This is another 

opportunity, among many, to help our 

students develop as future Christian 

leaders. Our students did a fantastic 

job during our first Be The Difference 

Day. I am most grateful to the student 

leaders, administration, faculty, staff, 

parents and alumni who shared in this 

day. We anticipate the date for next 

year’s BTDD to be Friday, April 29th. 

All of the above items are signs that Bishop Foley Catholic High 

School is vibrant and will thrive in the future. We have had a 

blessed past and we look forward to a promised future. Your 

support, your generosity and your prayers continue to make this 

happen. Thank you for all that you do in assisting us to “grow in 

knowledge and faith.” May the Lord bless you.

A Message from the Principal 

Dear Alumni and Parents 

Over twenty years ago, I came to Bishop Foley Catholic 

High School as the new English teacher and department 

chair. I was hired by Mr. Alex Gajewski, who was the 

principal at the time. Mr. Gajewski worked with a team of 

administrators—Mrs. Mona Russell, Mr. Gary Betzler and 

Mrs. Patti Hanson Rentzel—who were strong Catholic 

school leaders and served as wonderful role models 

for me. Each of them brought an amazing amount of 

dedication, talent, and energy—to continue the legacy 

of Bishop Foley that started with the very first Class of 

1969. 

In the last twenty years, I have seen Bishop Foley 

continue to be respected as one of the best Catholic 

college preparatory high schools in the area. As you 

read through this issue, you will learn about the myriad 

careers of our alums. In the field of journalism alone, 

Bishop Foley alums have earned many accolades. (See 

related story inside.) Our current students work diligently 

to prepare academically for college but also to prepare 

wisely for a career. Through co-curricular activities such 

as the Science Medical Club, Science Olympiad, Debate 

and Forensics, Foley Financial Professional Club, and 

Robotics, they are exposed to so many possibilities. 

Courses in engineering, art, foreign language, 

accounting, journalism and TV production, give them 

more than the core courses needed to graduate. (See

related stories in this issue.) We have over 7,000 alums 

across the United States and around the world and we 

are still growing and making an impact in today’s world.

At Foley, we have always 

prided ourselves on our 

spirit. We still practice the 

same active citizenship 

and Christian service that 

began in those very first 

years with Soph Out. This 

year alone, through events 

such as “Be the Difference 

Day, “(See story inside), 

Bingo for Special Needs 

Adults, and endless 

Christmas and Lenten 

service projects, we 

continue to be recognized 

as a school that gives Lauren Cross (‘13) and Mrs. Molnar 

and gives generously. In 

forty years, there have 

been many changes in the building, on campus, with 

the faculty and administration—but the mission of Foley 

remains unchanged—“. . .to develop the whole person in 

mind, body, and spirit.” 

As we begin to prepare for the new school year, we will 

be redesigning the entrance to the school in the cafeteria 

and the gym areas, updating our brick project, beginning 

improvements in the chapel, improving our athletic fields, 

and updating our technology to name a few projects. 

The Foley community will also be welcoming a new 

principal to replace me as I begin my retirement. I have 

a great deal of confidence in our new principal, Ms. 

Patricia Domagala. She is a well-respected Catholic 

school leader and is committed to the future of Foley for 

the next generation of Foley alums. 

For the past twenty some years, I have considered 

it an honor and a privilege to serve as a teacher and 

administrator at Foley. I thank Fr. Gerard LeBoeuf for his 

leadership; Mr. Eric Haley for balance and perspective; 

and the faculty and staff for their support and friendship. 

To the students, parents and alums that I have had the 

good fortune to know, I especially thank you for enriching 

my life. I will stay committed to spreading the good word 

about a great school, Bishop Foley Catholic High School.

Joanne Molnar is retiring after 30 years in Catholic education, 22 of those years at 

Bishop Foley. At BFC, she served as an English teacher, department chair, assistant 

principal and then principal. 

As the English Department 

Chair, she reorganized the 

English curriculum and began 

the summer reading program. 

She was Foley’s first North 

Central Accreditation 

Chairperson. 

As the Assistant Principal, 

besides her duties as Dean 

of Discipline, Mrs. Molnar 

started “Building Bridges,” 

a program for 8th graders 

from area Catholic junior 

high schools who take their 

Algebra class at Foley. She 

was also responsible for 

developing Foley’s “How to 

Succeed in High School” 

summer program for incoming 

9th graders that earned the 

Oakland Press’ “Excellence in 

Education” award. 

Mrs. Molnar became Principal 

in 2005. She helped to 

reorganize the Foley parent 

groups to the current Booster 

Board, a parent volunteer 

leadership board that earned 

the “Booster Board of the 

Year Award 2008-09” from the Archdiocese of Detroit. 

At graduation, Mrs. Molnar was awarded an Honorary Diploma and Father Gerry 

awarded both Mrs. Molnar and her husband, Ernie Molnar, the Heart of Foley for their 

volunteer service to the school.

A Message from the Incoming Principal 

Greetings 

I am looking forward to serving as the principal of Bishop Foley Catholic 

High School. I plan to continue the exceptional work of my predecessors who 

have upheld the mission of the school and provided a Catholic education 

in a Christ-centered environment that emphasizes academic excellence to 

develop the whole person in mind, body and spirit. Along with the dedicated 

administration, faculty, staff and school community, I pledge to help move the 

school forward as it grows to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Judith (Chenier) Roberts has been 

married to Patrick for 25 years. 

Daughter Kimberly is 23. In 2002 

Judith met a daughter she gave up 

for adoption who is now 27. Judith 

had surgery to fuse her lower spine 

in 2008. She lives in Saginaw where 

she crafts quilts and baby items for a 

homeless shelter and local bazaars.

Mark J. Lewakowski retired from 

the USAF in 2007. He works for 

the Department of Defense at Beale 

AFB where his responsibilities 

include aviation test programs, flight 

simulators and future aviation training 

requirements. He and his wife of 25 

years, Kathy, live in California where 

son John (22) attends college. Mark is 

a wine hobbyist and has two wines in 

the barrel for 2010 bottling.

Tim Betzler earned a BA in 

Telecommunications Information 

Technology Management from MSU. 

He lives in Sterling Heights and works 

in the Comerica Bank IT department.

Kristin (Glasgow) Watson and her 

husband live in Boyne City and expect 

their first child in 2010. She is a piano 

teacher and works for her parents in 

the family restaurant. She has two 

original rock music CD’s on the market 

and plans to return to live performance 

when the baby is older.

Leesa Lepore has earned degrees

Ann (Peterson) DeVault and her 

husband, Chris, have moved from 

Miami, Florida to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

She is teaching 8th grade Spanish. 

Laura Wakerley played soccer 

for one year at Alma College. She 

earned her BA in Psychology from 

Oakland University and her BSN from 

University of Detroit Mercy. She is 

working at the Avera Heart Hospital in 

South Dakota and has applied to be a 

Commissioned Officer in the United 

States Air Force.

Jillian Craparotta and Anthony 

Carl Whalin will marry on October 

23rd at Victoria Chapel in Waterford 

with a reception in Royal Oak. They 

both work for Waste Management

Lauren Monica is a member of the 

United States Marine Corps. where 

she serves as an aircraft mechanic. 

Bart Gramek is living in New Bern, 

North Carolina. He is a Sergeant in 

the United States Marine Corps and 

owns a home improvement business.

Caitlin Goddard was recently 

featured in The Oakland Press. Caitie 

played basketball while attending the 

University of Detroit Mercy where she 

graduated with a degree in business

international business. During 2009, 

she spent nine weeks in Uganda 

volunteering for The Real Uganda. 

Her duties included home visits for 

HIV-positive clients and teaching math 

and reading at an orphanage. She 

has also visited Lebanon and lived 

in Spain. She is currently living in 

New Zealand and working for Global 

Volunteer Network.

Kristen (Mills) Munyan is living in 

Royal Oak with husband, Matthew and 

working as a nurse in the Beaumont 

Royal Oak Neonatal Intensive 

Care Unit. She was awarded a full 

scholarship for the Masters of Nursing 

Education at Oakland University and 

expects to graduate in April 2011.

John Romanowski is living in 

Mount Pleasant. He is working as a 

Graduate Assistant while completing 

research for a M.S. in Microbiology.

Molly Peterson graduated in 2009 

from St. Bonaventure University 

with a degree in elementary/special 

education. This year she earned a 

master’s degree in childhood literacy. 

She has joined the Peace Corps and 

will leave in September for Micronesia 

and Palau where she will work as a 

teacher and community development 

worker.

Caitlin Demsky graduated Summa 

Cum Laude from Central Michigan 

with a BS in Psychology and Creative 

Writing and a minor in Leadership 

Studies. She will move to Portland, 

Oregon this summer to begin a Ph.D. 

program in Industrial/Organizational 

Psychology at Portland State 

University

Be The Difference Day

April 23, 2010 Bishop Foley and Guardian 

Angels students, staff and parents celebrated 

our first Be The Difference Day. Prior to the 

event, a Student Leaders team, parents 

and staff coordinated sponsorships, work 

sites, transportation, team assignments 

and lunches for 500. On the BIG DAY 

teams went out to 20 volunteer sites to 

visit the elderly, tutor the young, feed the 

homeless, assist at a home for unwed 

mothers, package food for the hungry, and 

clean neighborhoods, parks, churches and 

homes. Other teams remained on campus 

to paint dugouts, clean and re-organize 

storage areas and place 2,000 crosses on 

campus for Right to Life. BTDD provided our 

students with a sense of the power of what a 

community working together can accomplish.

Foley Happenings 

Make a Wish Honors Zach 

Joined at BFC by family, friends, media and 

the BFC football team, Zachary Davis had 

his wish for a golf cart granted by the Makea-Wish 

Foundation. 

Zach, 10 years old, has 

Duchennes Muscular 

Dystrophy. The 

Foundation had approved 

the wish earlier, but Zach 

wanted to wait two years 

until he could legally 

drive the cart. Foundation 

representatives included 

a helmet and BMX shirt 

and delivered the cart to

The Cross family, Lauren (’13), dad Patrick, Kyla (‘10) and mom 

Marisol celebrating Kyla’s receipt of a full athletic scholarship to 

play Division 1 soccer at Illinois State University. Kayla was also 

admitted to the ISU Honors Program which promotes scholarly 

and civic engagement. Kyla was named First Team All State 

and All Catholic in her sophomore and junior years at BFC

advocating for BFC for many years. Mrs. Green is leaving her 

position in Student Promotions and will be working at Foley part 

time in alumni relations.

The True Meaning …. 

4 area families were adopted for Christmas by the four Foley 

classes. Each family received food, clothing and gifts. 

10 women, participants in the Southwest Detroit Women’s Educational 

Empowerment Project for single parents, received gift 

bags of personal care items. BFC faculty and staff joined their 

donations to enhance the Christmas season for these Madonna 

University students. Each of the women, participants in the 

Holy Trinity Church/Madonna Southwest Detroit Women’s Educational 

Empowerment Project for single parents, received a gift 

bag of personal care items. The women, who have participated 

in the program for six years, will graduate this spring. 

Seniors Kevin Kostin, James Mof� t, Sarah Sinagoga and 

Chelsey Healy delivered books. 

306 new children’s books were collected by Foley students and 

faculty during the National Honor Society Gift of Reading project. 

Vistas Nuevas Headstart teachers also received $150.00 in 

gift cards donated to BFC Gift of Reading. 

$800.00 was donated to the St. Vincent DePaul Society Telethon 

for food for needy families. Students raised this money 

through a Jeans Day collection. 

2,064 cans of food were delivered to area soup kitchens following 

a school wide campaign. The male students and teachers 

collected the most donations, earned bragging rights and were 

able to wear jeans during exam week. 

3,000 hours of service given on Be The Difference Day


Foley Students Give Financial 

Presentation 

Students in the Foley Financial Professional Club teamed up 

with Michigan Catholic Credit Union to give a financial literacy 

presentation to first graders at Guardian Angels Catholic School. 

“Our goal is to help students build a foundation for healthy financial 

habits,” said Kaye Chervenak, Business Development Coordinator 

for Michigan Catholic Credit Union. “We thought it would 

be a great opportunity for high schools students to take part in 

financial literacy efforts and see first hand the importance of 

teaching students about money.” This was the first financial presentation 

for Foley students, Kelsey Gaskell (‘12), Christopher 

Hideg (‘10), and Ivette Delgado-Price (‘10) who talked about 

earning, saving and spending money. They also worked in small 

groups to help students practice adding dimes and pennies

Congratulations 

Ms. Monica Frade (Social Studies and English Teacher) and Mr. 

Ajit Katharopoulos were married in April with Fr. Gerry LeBoeuf 

officiating and several co-workers in attendance. Theirs was 

a multicultural wedding including Indian, Greek, and American 

ceremonies, food and music.

A Day to be Honored 

BFC faculty and students were honored at the 2009 Prep Bowl. 

Years of service in Catholic Schools awards were given to Sherrie 

Sheehan - 15 years (Mathematics), Mark Valinski - 40 years 

(Social Studies). Joanne Molnar - 30 years (Principal), Ron 

Zill - 5 years (Physical Education/Health) and Marc West - 5 

years (Chemistry, Athletic Director). Academic Scholar awards 

for highest GPA in each class, were given to Oivia Tuck (’12), 

Meredith McGee (’11) and Amanda Mancini (’10). 

Wayne State Conference 

Mr. Pavicic and his Accounting class attended a Leadership 

Conference at Wayne State University sponsored by the Michigan 

Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA). Paul 

McDonald, CPA and VP of Finance for the Detroit Red Wings 

showed the students his four Stanley Cup rings - his name 

is actually engraved on the Stanley Cup! Mr. McDonald also 

shared with the students a copy of a $14 million check that was 

given to Sergei Fedorov in 1998 for his signing bonus! (Benjamin 

is the symbol of the Feed the Pig campaign giving tips on 

saving money.)


Bishop Foley Debate Team News 

On March 17, six Bishop Foley Debaters were chosen 

to represent the Detroit Catholic Forensic League at the 

National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament 

in Omaha, Nebraska. The Bishop Foley students 

will compete in Public Forum Debate, in which two twoperson 

teams debate controversial issues in a “cross-fire” 

format before a judge or judges. They are the only entries 

from the state of Michigan in Public Forum Debate. 

Mrs. Peterson, team coach, joins Detroit Catholic Forensic 

League medal winners: Dan Finegan (’11), Anastasia Howell (’11), 

Eddie Budeca (’12), Justin Polk (’12), Ashley Thornton (’12), 

Brittany Worsham (’12), who will all be going to NCFL Nationals.

Foley Focus 

BFC Alums Are Busy In A Variety of Media 

Kathy Kieliszewski ‘88 is deputy director of photo 

and video for the Free Press. She has won four Emmys 

from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 

(NATAS). Previously she served as the newspaper’s 

picture editor and as editor for the paper’s 13 weekly 

community sections. In 2004 she was named Michigan 

Picture Editor of the Year. She previously worked as a 

staff photographer at the Lansing State Journal and the 

Grand Rapids Press. 

Heather Szerlag, ’89 is the Entertainment Producer 

for Orbite Television. She formerly reported for 

Marketplace and has contributed news and feature reports 

for other public radio programs including All Things 

Considered, The World, CBC-Radio and Pacifica Network 

News. She was also a producer for the Canadian Broadcasting 

Corporation in Washington D. C. In 1999 she was 

a recipient of the IRP Fellowship in International Journalism 

from Johns Hopkins University. 

Mike Reed ’96 is a Web Producer for 

WJBK FOX 2 in Detroit. Since 2006 he has been 

publishing content online during the morning hours for 

myFOXDetroit.com and enjoys starting people’s day 

through a medium that grows on a daily basis. It’s a job 

that didn’t exist in newsrooms across the country just 

10 years ago. After graduating from Bishop Foley and 

majoring in journalism at Western Michigan University, 

he worked for the Detroit Red Wings where he published 

content for DetroitRedwings.com, served as managing 

editor for Inside Hockeytown Magazine and was privileged 

to receive a Stanley Cup ring in 2002.

Pamela Ozdych Saunders ’90 is a Network Field 

Producer based in Metro Detroit for: ABC 20/20, CBS The 

Early Show, 60 Minutes, CNN, CNBC, Court TV, Entertainment 

Tonight, E!, Extra!, The Rachael Ray Show, Univision, 

Nash Entertainment, Spike TV, FOX2 Detroit, and 

PGA of America. She has worked at stations in Grand 

Rapids, Illinois, Virginia, and Atlanta, GA. In 2006, she 

was honored by NATAS with a Michigan Emmy for a program 

she produced and in 2002, she was nominated for a 

Southern Regional Emmy. She often works through KDN 

Videoworks, a satellite uplink and production company 

located adjacent to the Bishop Foley Football Field. She 

is married to Kent Saunders, an Emmy-winning photographer 

at WXYZ-TV. 

Ryan Betzler ’95 double majored at Grand Valley 

State University in Criminal Justice and Communications. 

He currently runs his own film/video production company 

in St. Clair Shores where he is an editor and cinematographer. 

Clients have included Ford, Toyota, Chrysler, 

Detroit Lions, Michigan Economic Development Corporation 

and Google, and his work has taken him all over the 

country. He has won awards in editorial and audience 

choice categories at several film festivals.

Future Engineers at Work 

The Mechanical Engineering/CAD II students have been 

working with a Stirling engine. Brandon May-Dismuke 

(‘11), Patrick Collins (‘11), Steve Szakacs (‘11), and Andrew 

Shango (‘11) have the engine up and running. They 

can analyze data from the engine as would be done in the 

Dynamometer Laboratories at the automotive companies.
