ITB hits a new high<br />

ITB is celebrating its 40th birthday with a record 10,856 exhibitors, up 4.3 per cent on 2005. A total of 183<br />

countries are represented, including,<br />

for the first time, exhibitors from Timor Leste (formerly known <strong>as</strong> E<strong>as</strong>t<br />

Timor)<br />

and Afghanistan, while Macedonia and North Korea both return after long absences.<br />

Many familiar destinations have dramatically incre<strong>as</strong>ed the size of their stands this year but, with the the<br />

entire exhibition site fully booked, they have had to expand vertically instead of horizontally. <strong>The</strong> number of<br />

two-storey stands is 25 per cent larger than in 2005.<br />

India, currently experiencing a tourism<br />

boom, is reflecting its growing popularity by occupying an entire hall<br />

(5.2) for the first time. <strong>The</strong> Arab states<br />

have 35 per cent more floor space than l<strong>as</strong>t year, while South America<br />

is up 40 per cent.<br />

Among the new features at ITB for 2006 is ITB Supply, allowing the service sector, such <strong>as</strong> sales and marketing<br />

companies, to exhibit to the travel industry. Another<br />

innovation is Immovest, a specialist trade fair for<br />

holiday properties and second homes.<br />

Meanwhile, the ITB Market Trends and Innovations convention h<strong>as</strong> grown even larger. This year, the five-day<br />

programme will feature 60 separate events and 180 speakers, including TUI chief executive Michael Frenzel, RF<br />

Hotels chairman Sir Rocco Forte and E<strong>as</strong>yjet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou.<br />

This year's exhibitor numbers at ITB exceed what proved to be a record year in 2005, when there were 10,409<br />

exhibitors, up from 10,023 the previous year. <strong>The</strong> largest exhibitor category at the 2005 show w<strong>as</strong> hotels,<br />

accounting for 26 per cent, followed<br />

by tourism organisations (23 per cent) and tour operators (19 per cent).<br />

Visitor numbers also hit a new high, edging up by just over 1,000 to 142,351.<br />

Thom<strong>as</strong> Cook downscales its vertical integration<br />

Thom<strong>as</strong> Cook is scaling back its vertical integration under a new strategy unveiled on Monday by new CEO Thom<strong>as</strong><br />

Holtrop.<br />

After its successful<br />

financial turnaround over the l<strong>as</strong>t two years, the company plans a gradual<br />

departure from the ideal of a fully-integrated travel group with tour operators, travel agencies, airlines and<br />

hotels. Instead, it will focus on travel products and sales distribution, with the in-house carriers and<br />

accommodation playing a less important role.<br />

" Our core business involves offering customers a broad selection of package<br />

holidays, components and services<br />

that are tailored to meet their individual<br />

needs. <strong>The</strong> products are to be distributed via a variety of channels,<br />

both operated by ourselves and in cooperation<br />

with others. In order to achieve this, we need a highly flexible<br />

business model that ties up <strong>as</strong> little capital <strong>as</strong> possible,” Holtrop declared. “As such, we are gradually<br />

departing from the ideal of an integrated leisure travel group. Not because the model itself w<strong>as</strong> bad but because<br />

it h<strong>as</strong> outlived its usefulness. It no longer conforms to the needs of a time characterised by excess capacities<br />

and falling prices at airlines and hotels. <strong>The</strong> risk of not using fixed capacities<br />

sufficiently now outweighs the<br />

opportunity of the enhanced return on investment <strong>as</strong>sociated with them. Our aim is, however, to reduce risk<br />

levels, improve our flexibility and speed, thereby tapping new growth are<strong>as</strong> – which is one of the key <strong>as</strong>pects of<br />

our strategy.“<br />

In view of long-standing speculation that Cook might sell its airline Condor, Holtrop described the airline’s<br />

turnaround into a leisure carrier with strong seat-only sales business <strong>as</strong> “a success story” and stressed: “At<br />

the current point in time, we have no re<strong>as</strong>on to change our strategy.“ Following the sale of Aldiana and Thom<strong>as</strong><br />

Cook India, the disinvestment programme is half-complete, according to CFO Ludger Heuberg. <strong>The</strong> group’s portfolio<br />

of hotels and incoming agencies will now be reviewed, with the exception of the partnership with Iberostar.<br />

Smaller tour operators or foreign subsidiaries could also be questioned.<br />

Cook is launching three main initiatives to develop its tour operator business. It will offer a mix of<br />

traditional package holidays and modular individual holidays to widen its product range, e-commerce activities<br />

will be stepped up, and there will be large-scale triple-digit million euro investment in IT modernisation and<br />

extension to make holiday production more efficient. Thom<strong>as</strong> Cook’s main financial targets are to incre<strong>as</strong>e<br />

turnover about 4% per year over the next three years, and incre<strong>as</strong>e its operating profit margin from 2.3% in<br />

2004/05 to 3.5-4%.<br />

In the 2004/05 financial year, Cook completed its dramatic financial turnaround by achieving a net profit of<br />

€105 million, representing a €400 million improvement within two years. Group customer numbers rose just 1.1%<br />

to<br />

13.2 million but sales rose f<strong>as</strong>ter, by 2.4% to €7.7 billion. <strong>The</strong> higher sales but above all significant cuts in<br />

personnel and other costs contributed significantly to the improvement in earnings. Earnings before interest,<br />

taxes<br />

and amortisation of goodwill (EBITA) incre<strong>as</strong>ed by €171.1 million to total €193.2<br />

million. Earnings before<br />

taxes reached €140.0 million <strong>as</strong> compared with the minus €149.3 million generated in the previous year. After<br />

taxes, a profit w<strong>as</strong> also reported also for the first time in four years. At €105.4 million, a three-digit amount<br />

w<strong>as</strong> recorded and, <strong>as</strong> such, exceeded the previous year’s level by €281.8 million.<br />

DBA<br />

and LTU launch co-operation pact<br />

German airlines DBA and LTU have unveiled their first joint-initiative<br />

following the recent acquisition of a 60 per cent stake in LTU by DBA owner Hans Rudolf Wöhrl. <strong>The</strong> two airlines<br />

have agreed a code-share deal on LTU flights to a dozen city destinations in Europe. A larger-scale code-share<br />

that covers DBA feeder flights for LTU’s long-haul services is being drawn up.<br />
