Clearwater, Florida, April 12, 2006<br />

the inaugural Eckerd College Spring Fling Tournament. This year a total of eight teams participated in the<br />

tournament. Teams from Armstrong Atlantic State University,<br />

Lemoyne College and Belmont Abby were some of the<br />

Division II softball teams that participated in this tournament and stayed in our area. We have already begun<br />

to work on bringing up to 18 teams to the event in 2007.<br />

Winning Inning Division I B<strong>as</strong>eball<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sports Commission partnered with the city of Clearwater and Winning Inning to host the 2006 Outback Division<br />

I College B<strong>as</strong>eball Spring Cl<strong>as</strong>sic at Jack Russell Stadium. This college spring training event had 12 teams<br />

participate<br />

in games. Ohio State, Penn State, Central Michigan and Lehigh are a few of the teams that competed<br />

in weeklong<br />

event. All of the teams that participated enjoyed a beautiful week of b<strong>as</strong>eball and played games at<br />

both<br />

Jack Russell Stadium and Brighthouse Networks Field.<br />

Triple Crown B<strong>as</strong>eball Tournament<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sports Commission worked with Triple<br />

Crown Sports, b<strong>as</strong>ed out of Colorado, to host a youth b<strong>as</strong>eball<br />

tournament.<br />

More than 50 teams participated in the tournament, with games being played in both St. Petersburg<br />

and Clearwater. Triple Crown will be hosting other b<strong>as</strong>eball events in our area this year and this partnership<br />

with b<strong>as</strong>eball h<strong>as</strong> expanded and now Triple Crown Sports will be hosting their first softball tournament in<br />

<strong>Pinell<strong>as</strong></strong> <strong>County</strong> in May.<br />

Big E<strong>as</strong>t Conference<br />

<strong>The</strong> CVB is partnering with USF and the Tampa CVB to develop a program to bring more overnight stays from<br />

visiting team alumni <strong>as</strong>sociations to the USF Football games. To open this program, we attended the Big E<strong>as</strong>t<br />

b<strong>as</strong>ketball tournament to meet with the Big E<strong>as</strong>t alumni <strong>as</strong>sociations. <strong>The</strong>re w<strong>as</strong> a reception for two nights<br />

where invitees could meet and mingle with representatives of the two CVB’s. We have since followed up with the<br />

representatives of the different <strong>as</strong>sociations to set up destination reviews and identify opportunities for<br />

promotion<br />

and advertising to their members.<br />

Florida Tourism Day<br />

<strong>The</strong> Sports Commission attended the annual Florida Tourism Day with all the sports commissions from the state.<br />

We addressed issues related to our business and each sports commission joined their CVB to meet with our<br />

representative legislators.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ABC hit show “Supernanny” is filming from March 22 to April 4 at a residence in Palm Harbor. <strong>The</strong> crew is staying at the Hilton Clearwater Beach<br />

with an<br />

anticipated 250 room nights.<br />

Moxie Pictures and BMI Music filmed a music video for Coldplay on March 3. <strong>The</strong> St. Petersburg Municipal Marina w<strong>as</strong> the location<br />

for this popular band’s new music<br />

video for their hit “<strong>The</strong> Hardest Part.” <strong>The</strong> making of the video will be featured<br />

on their upcoming tour DVD.<br />

Working Stiff Productions of Baltimore filmed a Bruster’s Ice Cream internet commercial at Sand Key Park on<br />

March 14. Approximately 30 locals were hired and the producer estimated $70,000 spent locally. Working Stiff<br />

enjoyed the location and crew so much that they talked about using <strong>Pinell<strong>as</strong></strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>as</strong> its Florida b<strong>as</strong>e.<br />

Steinmart spent four days shooting all over <strong>Pinell<strong>as</strong></strong> <strong>County</strong> for its Mother’s Day catalog. Locations included<br />

Tarpon Springs, Don CeSar Beach Resort and Spa, Clearwater Beach, downtown Dunedin and Fort DeSoto Park. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

reported very<br />

positive experiences with crew and locations.<br />
