Varietas haec <strong>in</strong> cultura habitu Phomae exiguae var. exiguae et var. gilvescentis<br />
similis, sed matrix conidiorum roseo-bubal<strong>in</strong>a et citius crescens.<br />
Etymology: Refers to <strong>the</strong> former placement <strong>in</strong> and close<br />
resemblance to Ph. exigua var. lilacis.<br />
Colonies on OA 70–75 mm diam after 7 d, marg<strong>in</strong> regular.<br />
Immersed mycelium black to greenish olivaceous, sparsely visible<br />
due to coverage by a mat <strong>of</strong> mouse-grey woolly to compact aerial<br />
mycelium; reverse mouse-grey to olivaceous. Colonies on MEA<br />
70–75 mm diam. after 7 d, marg<strong>in</strong> regular. Immersed mycelium<br />
completely covered by a compact aerial mat, which is smoke-grey<br />
with some mouse-grey to white zones; reverse black. Colonies on<br />
CHA slower grow<strong>in</strong>g, 70–80 mm diam after 7 d, marg<strong>in</strong> regular,<br />
appearance similar as on MEA. Application <strong>of</strong> NaOH did not have<br />
any effect. Pycnidial and conidial shapes and sizes fit with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> B.<br />
exigua species concept. Conidial matrix rosy-buff.<br />

Notes: This novel variety <strong>of</strong> B. exigua, dist<strong>in</strong>guished from o<strong>the</strong>r B.<br />
exigua varieties on basis <strong>of</strong> DAF analysis (Aveskamp et al. 2009b)<br />
and AFLP (Abeln et al. 2002), is closely related to B. exigua var.<br />
exigua and B. exigua var. gilvescens. Upon collection, <strong>the</strong> stra<strong>in</strong><br />
represent<strong>in</strong>g B. exigua var. pseudolilacis has probably erroneously<br />
been identified as var. lilacis due to its host association.<br />
