Notes: Phoma diversispora was orig<strong>in</strong>ally described by Bubák as a<br />
pathogen <strong>of</strong> cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) caus<strong>in</strong>g Black Node Disease<br />
(Van der Aa et al. 2000), but was later classified as a variety <strong>of</strong> Ph. exigua<br />
by Boerema & Van Kesteren (1980) and Boerema et al. (1981a), on<br />
basis <strong>of</strong> its morphology. The present study, however, revealed <strong>the</strong> B.<br />
exigua varieties to be phylogenetically dist<strong>in</strong>ct from <strong>the</strong> present species,<br />
which justifies re-establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> taxon as separate species <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
genus Boeremia. The present species is closely related to B. noackiana,<br />
formerly known as Ph. exigua var. noackiana (see below).<br />

Notes: Boeremia exigua var. c<strong>of</strong>feae was orig<strong>in</strong>ally described from<br />
leaves <strong>of</strong> c<strong>of</strong>fee plants (C<strong>of</strong>fea arabica, Stewart 1957) as Ascochyta<br />
c<strong>of</strong>feae and A. tarda. The observed late euseptation <strong>in</strong> this species<br />
proved to be a character common for Phoma species accommodated<br />
<strong>in</strong> section Phyllostictoides, lead<strong>in</strong>g to a recomb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>in</strong>to Phoma, as<br />
Ph. tarda. Phylogenetic results obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> present study reveal<br />
genetic similarity between <strong>the</strong> present species and <strong>the</strong> B. exigua<br />
species complex. The cultures <strong>of</strong> B. exigua varieties are somewhat<br />
slower grow<strong>in</strong>g than those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present species, which completely<br />
covers <strong>the</strong> agar surface (90 mm diam) with<strong>in</strong> 7 d. The pycnidia <strong>of</strong><br />
B. exigua var. tarda may grown to up to 255 µm (De Gruyter et<br />
al. 2002), but o<strong>the</strong>r micromorphological characters fit with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
scope <strong>of</strong> B. exigua as described for Ph. exigua by Van der Aa et al.<br />
(2000) and De Gruyter et al. (2002). It is concluded, <strong>the</strong>refore, that<br />
Ph. tarda should be reduced to a variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> B. exigua. Multiple<br />
Phoma species have been found <strong>in</strong> association with C<strong>of</strong>fea arabica,<br />
such as Ph. c<strong>of</strong>feae-arabicae, Ph. c<strong>of</strong>feicola, Ph. c<strong>of</strong>feiphila, Ph.<br />
costarricensis, Ph. excelsa, and Ph. pereupyrena (Saccas 1981,<br />
Aveskamp et al. 2009a). None <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se species however matches<br />
<strong>the</strong> description that is applied to taxa <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> B. exigua complex.<br />

Etymology: Varietal name refers to <strong>the</strong> yellow conidial matrix, which<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>guishes this variety.<br />
