Keefe: Can you state defi nitely whether or not you have a present<br />

recollection as to whether the President did in fact contact<br />

you?<br />

Marshall: I am quite certain that he did not. . . . Th ere is no<br />

question in my mind; no. Th at is a positive answer.<br />

Keefe: And you are certain that you did not attend any meeting<br />

then, at the White House that night?<br />

Marshall: I am absolutely certain <strong>of</strong> that. . . . I might say that<br />

. . . not only had I no dinner engagements <strong>of</strong> any kind between<br />

the 1st <strong>of</strong> November <strong>and</strong> the 7th <strong>of</strong> December . . . but that Mrs.<br />

Marshall was convalescing from having broken three or four<br />

ribs <strong>and</strong> we didn’t go out anywhere. . . . So all the evidence . . .<br />

is that I was home, as was customary. . . .<br />

Keefe: Th at is your present recollection? . . .<br />

Marshall: I can’t say that is my recollection. I am certain I was<br />

at home, but I don’t recall anything about it.<br />

Keefe: But you are certain <strong>of</strong> one thing <strong>and</strong> that is that you<br />

received no communication from the president on the evening<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 6th <strong>of</strong> December <strong>and</strong> that you didn’t attend any meeting<br />

at the White House that night?<br />

Marshall: Th at is correct. 290<br />

When asked about the morning <strong>of</strong> December 7, Marshall<br />

repeated his account <strong>of</strong> his Sunday morning routine. He said<br />

the fi rst information I had <strong>of</strong> anything unusual was . . . after<br />
