Outside the doors <strong>of</strong> the Committee’s hearing room, Captain<br />

L.F. Saff ord continued to pursue the fate <strong>of</strong> the missing<br />

<strong>Pearl</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> documents. Saff ord played a crucial role in the<br />

several investigations. It was Saff ord who fi rst called Kimmel’s<br />

attention to the fact that Washington had received information<br />

through Japanese MAGIC intercepts, information that had not<br />

been shared with the <strong>Pearl</strong> <strong>Harbor</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>ers. It was Saff ord<br />

who discovered that the intercepts were missing. It was Saff ord<br />

who fi nally located most <strong>of</strong> them <strong>and</strong> had them copied <strong>and</strong><br />

replaced in the fi les where they belonged. However, he was never
