NW 100 Movable Walls
6
Today’s drive for economic
efficiency demands flexibility
and ‘multi-tasking’.
Movable walls provide the key to
competent management of your
space and Alco Beldan has the
expertise to provide the
opportunity for you to make the
very best use of the space
available.
NW 100 WALL PANELS ACHIEVE AN
ACOUSTIC RATING OF RW 59dB
with a panel thickness of only 100mm up to Rw 57dB
Space Management
Total Flexibility
Alco Beldan has emerged as the country’s leading supplier of
acoustic movable walls. After many years working in this highly
specialised trade, we have built up an admirable reputation for quality
with both Architects and their clients.
THERE ARE GOOD REASONS WHY:
QUALITY BY DESIGN.
Each component is designed to do its job precisely, with no expense
spared on research and development. The product has been
designed to give the best performance through years of effective
service, day in, day out.
QUALITY IN MANUFACTURE.
Our European factory has achieved ISO 9001 accreditation. The
panels are built on a dedicated production line, utilising modern
machinery and are delivered, fully assembled, direct from either our
factory in the Midlands or from one of our other facilities in Europe.
QUALITY OF OPERATION.
Drawing on the wealth of design experience gained by our technical
staff, our schemes are both innovative and cost effective. We also offer
on-site staff training after installation, because we understand that
ordinary people use the panels every day, long after the ‘experts’ have
left the scene.
Most projects begin with the spark of an idea, whether originated by
the need for more usable space in an existing building or the desire to
provide for greater range of activities in a new development. Each
project then becomes a challenge which calls for comprehensive
analysis in order to achieve its own individual solution.
Alco Beldan’s nation-wide team of technical advisors understand the
demands of integrating a movable wall system. Early and careful
consultation can solve many of the problems encountered whilst taking
a project from concept to completion. By working alongside Architects
and clients, offering our advice and expertise where the opportunity
presents itself, we seek to optimise the space available, and create a
visually impressive environment within the budget constraints, whilst
maintaining the overall programme schedules.
Space Management
From Church Halls to Sports Halls and Community Centres to
Convention Centres, our wall does them all. Thousands of users
have benefited from carefully thought out solutions using the same
basic product. As the name suggests, the NW100 panels are always
100mm thick, except special Rw 59dB and fire resistant versions.
By using advanced design technology and selecting the best materials
available means we don’t need different models to achieve higher
performance. Even the heaviest panels can be moved easily through
track junctions allowing full mobility of the panels and flexibility of
wall layouts.
The Alco Beldan NW100 Movable Wall is a true workhorse, although
finished differently, the same panel unit can be found performing its
sound reducing function every day in Offices, Hospitals, Schools and
Colleges, Community Centres, and of course, Hotels.
Whatever the application, the basic requirements are the same; for a
well-engineered, totally reliable movable wall system which will perform
well over its whole lifetime.
The Alco Beldan NW100 Movable wall does just that.
• Its not luck nor by coincidence that probably the most well known
hotel chain has installed Alco Beldan NW 100 movable walls in over
50 of their hotels.
They have demonstrated their confidence in our movable walls,
how about you?
• Ask yourself how can Alco Beldan reliably deliver and install
approximately 100 movable wall panels each working week?
Repeat business from hundreds of satisfied customers makes
up 75% of our order book.
• Acknowledged as world leaders in movable wall technology, our
German designed panels are now being developed and built here in
the UK.
Why don’t you take advantage of the best of both worlds,
the best quality at a competitive price?
• Alco Beldan are recognised in the Interiors industry for Gold Award
winning installations, and we have the confidence gained only from
years of experience in handling all types of project from the exotic,
with hung silk screen panels to robust and rugged panels installed in
schools etc.
Swaminarayan Hindu Temple
Architect: Triad Architects, London
Internationally recognised as one of the most ornate buildings of the
world, the Swaminarayan Hindu Temple, in North London has used
Alco Beldan NW 100 movable walls to acoustically divide the
Prayer Hall.
The Prayer Hall is the central part of this complex, but because the
complete floor area of 2,300 m 2
is used only a few times each year, the
Hall needed to be divided into smaller, more manageable and efficient
areas for everyday use. Alco Beldan were asked to design a system
that would divide the Hall into three separate rooms, yet still be
manually moved into place by the resident staff.
The impressive proportions of the 51 x 45 metres of Hall floor area is
balanced by the 7.20 metres height and this meant there were two
important aspects to consider; the weight of the panels and ease of
their operation.
Each of the panels is carried on two specially developed rollers running
in heavy duty steel tracks fabricated to form semi-automatic stacking
bays at the end of each of the three movable walls used to divide the
Hall. The staff only have to roll the panels into the 45° track junction
and the panel turns easily into the stacking position. Although the
panels are just 100mm thick, their acoustic rating is R’w 51dB, and this
is enhanced by the addition of a special herringbone pattern acoustic
wallcovering applied by the main contractor.
The client is delighted with the performance of the panels and in
particular, the ease with which these panels, some of the tallest in the
country, are moved into place.
The Celtic Manor Resort
Architect: Goff Associates
There cannot be many in the independent hotel sector that haven’t
heard of the rebuilding of the Celtic Manor Hotel. Travellers along
the M4 corridor at this gateway into Wales cannot miss this magnificent
hotel which sits in an imposing position high on a hill overlooking
the motorway.
As expected of one of ‘The Leading Hotels of the World’ the interior
facilities are no less impressive with a carved Welsh Dragon dominating
the foyer, leading to 400 rooms and superb restaurants all serving an
international standard Convention Hall, the Caernarfon Suite. Alco
Beldan NW 100 movable walls have been installed in the convention
hall and the syndicate rooms but the most difficult challenge facing the
technical staff was how to support the 6.30 metre high panels in the
Caernarfon Suite. Above the ceiling is a 5.00 metre deep void to the
substantial roof structure, which also supports the car park. In order for
the heavy panels to operate in all conditions we had to take account of
100mm dead-load deflection in the roof structure which could deflect
a further 50mm under live load from the car park. The key to this
successful solution was our standard rapid action scissor link
mechanism, which provides more than 50mm of spring assisted travel
to our unique, double depth top and bottom seal carriers, specially
developed for this job.
Each panel is suspended on two rollers running in heavy duty track and
both roller hangers are fitted with self-locking height adjustment
devices which prevent the panels losing level alignment.
The track layout provides options to divide the Suite into six, with
doubled up tracks at the centre so two walls may be set up in a duplex
configuration for very high acoustic separation between the two areas.
The resulting acoustic performance from a duplex set of Rw 58dB
rated panels was assessed as Rw 65dB or better.
The panels are finished to match the panelled effect of the perimeter
walls so when closed, they fully integrate with the high quality décor,
and when not in use the movable wall panels are concealed in
recesses around the Hall.
To complement the colours used in the traditional Celtic design on the
ceiling, the panels were faced with burr poplar veneer with contrasting
inlays and American cherry mouldings for skirting and dado rails,
complete with bronze colour coded edge profiles.
Shaw Park Plaza
London
The project is interesting because it is on the site of the George
Bernard Shaw Theatre, part of which has been incorporated into
the scheme. The movable wall in the main function area is 4300mm
high and has a sound reduction rating of Rw 53dB. The panel finish
on our walls complement and match the structural walls around the
rest of the room. Movable walls are also installed in the reception
breakout area leading into the main function room and incorporate 2
sets of double pass doors. Additionally, operable walls have been
installed in the syndicate rooms with a sound reduction of Rw 50dB.
The Nicholas Grimshaw designed new stand at Lords Cricket
Ground has a number of private boxes divided by Alco Beldan
100 Series Movable Walls.
Acoustically these walls had to be manufactured to the highest
standard (58dB) to maintain privacy.
The success of the installation has created flexibility for Lords to also
lease out the enlarged boxes as meeting rooms to companies. This
again creates a multiuse stand that does not stand empty when there
is no cricket.
Lords
Alco Beldan have also installed movable walls in the offices of the
English Cricket Board, which is also within Lords grounds.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Alco Beldan NW 100 is a rapid action
movable wall system designed for easy,
efficient and reliable daily use. Interlocking,
individual panels, 100mm thick, carried on
rollers running in a top track only, push
together with an expanding panel as the
last element, to form a complete, secure
partition wall. Panels have independently
operating pressure seal carriers extending
at top and bottom.
PANEL SIZES
Panels are custom made with widths from
approx. 650mm up to a maximum of
1260mm. Panel heights from 2.00m up to
10.00m approx.
Standard Panel
STANDARD PANEL
CONSTRUCTION
Each panel is constructed with a welded
tubular steel inner frame, clad both sides with
16mm high density boards, isolated from the
internal frame. The cavity is insulated using
layers of sound absorbing materials as
required to achieve the acoustic rating.
Cladding boards are retained by removable
aluminium edge profiles which do not form
part of the panel frame.
INTER-PANEL CONNECTION
Sound leakage through the vertical
connection between meeting panels is
minimised by aluminium interlocking wedgeshaped,
tongue-and-grooved, edge profiles
with integral magnetic strips. Profiles may be
either exposed, to protect the panel edge, or
concealed.
PANEL FINISHES
Panels can be finished to suit almost every
taste and to match with adjacent décor.
Standard panels are finished in durable,
high-density melamine-faced particleboard,
class E1. Other options include: laminates,
selected wood veneers, primer sheet for onsite
decoration with wall-coverings, and any
combination of these using dado rails and
mouldings etc. Sections of pin-board and
special absorptive acoustic boards may be
incorporated; and for ultimate integration,
inlaid veneered feature panels sourced and
supplied by the client’s appointed joinery
specialist.
OPERABLE ACOUSTIC SEALS
The acoustic seals are housed in deep, twopiece
extruded aluminium carrier assemblies
that extend independently at the top and
bottom of each panel. The black finished
carriers have insulated bridging plates to
minimise sound transmission. To ensure leak
free sealing and secure panel stability, the
seal carriers operate under very high (2kN)
spring pressure controlled by a manually
operated, rapid action scissor link
mechanism (with motor drive option). Our
scissor link device provides much longer seal
travel for out-of-level floors and facilitates
easy setting up of the panels by anyone,
using a removable handle.
TRACK SYSTEM
Panels are carried on roller hangers running
in a white finished metal overhead track,
usually recessed into the ceiling. The track
must be suspended from a suitable
structure adequate to carry the loadings
imposed. Track intersections are precision
made off-site ensuring smooth transition
through junctions into any one of a number
of remote panel stacking options
ROLLER SYSTEMS
Special roller units have been developed to
match each track to ensure easy movement
of the panels through track intersections.
Depending upon the configuration, panels
are essentially supported using one or two
roller units; each on a hanger assembly
incorporating our unique height setting
device. Tall and heavy panels use a guide
roller unit running in special heavy-duty steel
track fabricated to facilitate turning of
panels into stacking area.
HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Each roller is fitted with a unique, self-locking
height-setting device ensuring the panels
remain level whilst allowing the height to be
adjusted and re-set at a later date without
having to interfere with the ceiling.
SOUND REDUCTION
The Alco Beldan NW 100 movable wall
system offers the best levels of acoustic
performance up to Rw 57dB from
panels just 100mm thick. The
superlative performance of the top
version at Rw 59dB requires a panel
thickness of 120mm. NW 100 movable
wall panels were tested by an independent
laboratory in full accordance with the latest
(2002) version of ISO/EN 20 140-3. The Rw
57dB walls were also tested with acoustic
boards fitted to one side and to both sides
(see pages 26 & 27). Test reports and
certificates available on request.
QUALITY ASSURANCE &
DURABILITY
Essential requirements of any high quality
movable wall system are its build quality
and its ability to withstand constant use
without adversely affecting performance.
Our German factory has attained ISO 9001
accreditation for quality and panels pass
the DIN 310.000/3.79 standard test
enduring 3,500 operations.
IMPACT RESISTANCE
Tested in accordance with DIN 18032-3
THERMAL TRANSMISSION
Up to 0.6 / m 2 , depending upon insulating
of the door leaf during last fraction of closing movement. Heavy-duty
hinges with adjustable sleeves are fitted, as are recessed lever handles.
TELESCOPIC PANEL
Most movable wall systems incorporate a telescopic panel to provide
a working clearance for operator handling of the panels and achieve a
high-pressure, leak free seal at the jamb post. Panel construction is as
our standard panel but uses a bevel gear mechanism to actuate an
adjustable, internal extending section and the top and bottom seals,
sequentially in one winding operation. The extending section is finished
to match the panel surface, travels 100 mm carrying top and bottom
seal extensions to fully close into the corners. Operation is from one
side only.
Acoustic
Ratings
Noise is defined as unwanted sound and it is usually just a nuisance but at
times it can be a real headache. It invades privacy and causes disruption,
when all everyone wants is a little peace and quiet.
Movable walls are designed to divide areas of a room and control the level of the
noise or sound travelling from one area to another thereby reducing the nuisance,
creating an agreeable environment.
Alco Beldan NW100
movable wall panels are
designed to provide
effective sound control by
the following means:
breaking the vibration path
absorbing the sound energy
blocking the noise path
When considering Noise
Control it is important to
appreciate the difference between
sound absorption and sound
insulation.
Sound Absorption refers to the
attenuation of the reverberant
noise within the same room and
therefore it mostly falls outside the
scope of a movable wall system.
However when a sound wave hits
a movable wall some of its energy
will be reflected and some
absorbed.
Sound Insulation, (also known as
sound reduction) is the prevention
of noise being transmitted from
one area to another, by erecting a
partition wall, for example. The
ability of a partition wall to resist
the passage of sound energy
through it is largely determined by
its mass, but structural isolation
of the two surfaces and sound
absorbency of the cavities in the
construction are other factors
which enhance the overall
performance.
An Alco Beldan NW100 movable
wall combines these 3 factors by:
Using dense cladding boards to
add to the mass. Careful detailing
of the internal components to
isolate the boards from the inner
steel frame and slabs of mineral
wool infill within the cavity to
increase the sound absorbency.
Attention to detail is all important
and that is why even the cavities
of the seal carriers at top and
bottom of the panel are filled with
mineral wool.
59 (Note 1)
Note 1. Special version 120mm thick
The sound insulation level of a
movable wall is graded by its
Sound Reduction Index (SRI). This
is usually derived from the results
of laboratory tests and is
expressed in terms of 'Rw dB',
being a single figure based on a
weighting system defined in
BS/ISO/EN 20.140
Since the results of laboratory
tests are obtained in perfect
conditions where there is no
flanking sound leakage, they
cannot be replicated on site where
flanking leakage is always present
at various levels. The normal loss
between laboratory and site
performance is 3 to 8dB,
depending upon how much care
has been taken to eliminate sound
transmission paths. No movable
wall nor partitioning contractor can
guarantee any particular 'on site'
performance because flanking
transmission is beyond their
control.
Naturally each manufacturer will
try to show that their product
provides the best acoustic
performance, but the only way in
which each product can be
compared equally is by laboratory
test results. Adoption of the new
Standard EN ISO 20 140-3 means
that a new method of testing has
recently been introduced. If a
specifier requires that a product
must be tested in accordance
with EN ISO 20 140-3, then the
only valid test certificates are
those showing the results of tests
carried out in full accordance with
that Standard by an independent
test laboratory. The results are
expressed as Rw values only.
The performance scale is
logarithmic which means it is
quite easy to achieve acoustic
improvement at the lower end of
the scale but very difficult to
achieve significant improvement
at the higher end. Its similar to
squeezing water from a saturated
sponge and partly explains why it
is more expensive to raise the
acoustic performance by 2dB
from 52dB up to 54dB than it is to
raise it from 41dB to 43dB. An
increase in insulation of 10dB will
correspond to a halving of the
perceived loudness of the noise.
The perception of noise is
subjective, some people have
more acute hearing than others
do, and therefore we must
understand exactly what level of
insulation the client is expecting
from the movable wall. In most
cases the client's expectation of
noise reduction levels cannot be
achieved using panels rated lower
than Rw 48dB, when flanking
transmission losses of 8dB are
taken into consideration.
Acoustic insulation is expensive
and it is tempting to try to make
savings, but this will be false
economy if the resulting noise
level is still a nuisance.
Don't take risks. We can advise
you and provide practical 'on site'
results based on our experience.
ACOUSTIC
CHARACTERISTICS
To achieve the optimum audible
condition in a room, it is necessary
to consider reverberation times.
In general, a concert hall needs
acoustically 'live' conditions,
whereas a seminar room needs
reduced levels of reverberation for
intelligible speech.
Alco Beldan NW100 movable wall
panels can be faced with special
acoustic slotted boards which
can improve the acoustic
characteristics of a room by
increasing the sound absorption
levels. Refer to section on pages
26 and 27.
24
To determine the correct level of sound reduction for any particular circumstance is a complicated
process, and for an accurate appraisal, it is better to obtain the advice of an Acoustic Consultant.
However, it is possible to obtain a reasonably accurate prediction of expected performance by comparing
the results obtained by other methods of dividing rooms, and by using information from various sources, the
table shown below may help to identify the required level of noise reduction.
Fire and Smoke Resistance
Designed to Make Life Safer
As market leaders, Alco Beldan NW100 movable walls are now
available in five levels of Fire Performance. Options include Fire
Resistance of 30 and 60 minutes, Smoke Protection, Class '1' Spread
of Flame rating and Class 'O' fire propagation.
FIRE RESISTING WALLS
Our type NW115 F is a
movable partition wall which
has been tested in accordance
with DIN 4102-T2 and achieved
60 minutes with class A2 (nonflammable)
cladding boards. This
was also tested with B2 (normal)
cladding boards and achieved 30
minutes. The same construction
was also tested for sound
reduction and achieved ratings up
to Rw 54dB in accordance with
EN 20140-3 (1995). This type
NW115F is also smoke resistant
to DIN 18095-2
SMOKE RESISTING WALLS
Our type NW100 RS is a
movable partition wall which
has additional modifications to
make it smoke protected in
accordance with DIN 18095-2
CLASS '1' SURFACE SPREAD
OF FLAME
If there is no requirement for fire
resistance specified and only
reduction of flame spread is
needed, we offer our type
NW100S. This is our standard
movable wall, which is
constructed almost completely
using non-flammable materials,
but with B1 (difficult to ignite)
cladding boards or sheet steel
covering. Although this
construction reduces flame
spread, it is not the same as the
'F' construction and therefore has
no fire resistance rating. It has no
General Building Control
Certificate.
CLASS 'O' FIRE PROPAGATION
In order to comply with the more
demanding Class 'O'
requirements, our NW100S
movable wall can be supplied with
A2 (non-flammable, no
contribution to combustion)
cladding boards.
Alco Beldan are aware of new
European initiatives to
harmonise the various national
Fire and Smoke Regulations of
member states within the
European Union. To prepare for
the introduction of new EN
standards, our German
manufacturing partner, Franz
Nusing GmbH & Co., has
developed a new range of Fire
and Smoke resisting movable
walls.
The new standard is DIN
EN1364-1. Fire protection in
buildings is a matter of Public
Safety and must be considered
extremely carefully and seriously.
The Specifier must first establish
the level of Fire Protection
required by the Authorities in
respect of a movable wall system
which is classed to as a ‘non-load
bearing wall’.
Fire Resistance
It must be remembered that
movable walls are not self-closing
and therefore cannot be classified
with a F30, F60 or F90 rating.
Because of their mobility, the fire
resistance rating of a movable
wall only relates to its
performance when in a closed
position with the seals fully
extended.
With something as important as
preservation of life, it is essential
that products are appraised in
accordance with the test
procedures and certificates of
verification must be provided.
When tested in accordance with
DIN 4102-T2, a movable wall
which successfully passes the
test will be issued with a General
Building Control Certificate.
The Alco Beldan NE115 F has
recently been tested in
accordance
www.alcobeldan.com
with DIN EN 1364-1 classification
and General Building Control Test
Certificates have been issued for
30 minutes and 60 minutes fire
resistance. The sample tested
included several inter-panel joints,
grooves, fixings, wall posts etc.
This is therefore a fully movable
partition wall which when fully
closed and locked in position,
achieved the same fire resistance
as a fixed wall. The NW 115 F
movable wall system meets the
requirements of the Building
Regulations and currently
represents the best movable
partition wall for the protection of
escape and rescue routes.
The new NW 115 F system has
been carefully developed from the
standard NW 100 S and many
features are similar as detailed in
specification below:
Panel choice: Similar to NW 100 but
No glazing cut-outs
No lip seal joints
No door panels (not tested)
Panel thickness: 115mm
Internal Frame: Peripheral welded steel section as NW 100
Panel cladding: 16mm boards rated A2 or B2 depending upon fire rating required.
Finishes: Laminate, veneer or paint (max thickness 0.5mm)
Inter-panel joints: Aluminium profiles with magnetic inserts as NW 100
Vertical edge profiles: Concealed type CP only
Acoustic seals: Special seals with intumescent strips at top and bottom
Seal operation: As NW 100
Track: G M Steel with special protective track cladding
Sound insulation: Rw 49dB up to Rw 54dB (laboratory tested in accordance with ISO/EN 20140-1995).
It is most important to remember when considering Fire Resisting movable walls, that only those
products which have successfully passed the Fire Test are awarded a Building Control Certificate. There
is no reason specifiers should be put off insisting on inspecting a copy of the test data by vague covering
statements such as testing in accordance with ‘DIN 4102 F30 quality’ or ‘F30 A/B flammability’ since
such statements mean nothing.
You now have the ideal
opportunity to incorporate
optimum smoke protection right
from the start when using
movable walls with the Alco
Beldan NW100RS, available now.
In the event of a fire, creeping
smoke is the greatest danger.
Most people perceive the
development of heat in a fire as
being the most dangerous
aspect; however fire experts
know the accelerated spread of
smoke has a higher potential for
danger. In such situations, escape
for the occupants of the building
Smoke Resistance
along emergency escape routes
is made difficult and the dense
smoke hampers the job of fighting
the fire by the Fire Service.
For these reasons, fire protection
experts recommend that normal
smoke and heat extraction
equipment be supplemented by
the provision of smoke protection
doors and building elements
which prevent the spread of
standard NW100 panels and by
using a new sealing technique,
protected by German Patent No:
DBGM 299 03 466.6, have
achieved the improved smoke
retention characteristics.
When in the closed position, the
Alco Beldan NW100 RS movable
wall system complies with the
strict requirements of DIN 18
095/2, but offers no fire protection
rating.
Electric Operation
Designed to Make Life Easier
www.alcobeldan.com
Experience has shown that
movable walls are not
foolproof because the system
relies on the operator manually
extending the pressure seals at
top and bottom of each panel.
Whilst our rapid action
mechanism only needs 4 or 5
turns to extend the seals, when
pressed for time setting out a long
movable wall, an operator may
forget to extend the seals on
every panel. The result could be
complaints about the level of
noise through the movable wall.
Electrical operation of the seals
not only assures the seals will be
extended fully but also achieves
this without time consuming
handle winding, thereby
shortening the setting up process.
With Electric Operation the panels
are pushed into place as normal
but as soon as the magnetic
profiles engage together the seals
automatically extend applying the
correct pressure to give optimum
sound insulation and stability.
Not all Movable Walls are Created Equal
Excellence - is what’s inside
THE BENEFITS OF A NW100 PANEL
Externally, most movable wall panels look the same, but it's not
simply the outside which makes a good movable wall, its what's
inside the panel which makes the difference.
A movable wall is a significant investment and unless you already have a
movable wall installed, how can you tell how good it is? Are you buying
a juicy peach or a bitter lemon; you can only tell by opening it.
So what makes our movable walls different?
• Ease of Operation
• Durability
• Measured performance
• Attention to detail
• Designed, manufactured, supplied and installed all by one UK
based company
Ask to see a sample panel
Ask to see an installation
Ask to visit the factory
Our nationwide team of movable wall specialists will be happy to
accompany you on a visit to demonstrate the performance and benefits
our regular clients have come to expect
Our panels have: which means:
a standard thickness of 100mm the same panel construction for all sound reduction ratings from Rw 39
- 57dB (Rw 59 dB is 120mm thick, Fire Resistant walls are 115mm thick)
a robust, welded steel frame a rigid structure to mount our high pressure springs for ultimate panel
stability, acoustic performance and a longer life span.
a scissor link mechanism quick and easy operation of the seals; and much higher seal
pressure as standard (2KN per panel) than with simple cam type
systems.
high pressure seals reliable and positive contact with floor and ceiling track provides
unrivalled panel stability and acoustic rating.
long travel seals better tolerance of 'out-of-level' floors and 'live' loading of structure
a positive height locking device panels do not drop out of level alignment, and allows height
adjustment without opening ceiling, saving on servicing charges.
magnetic edge profiles positive and tight interlocking of panels at vertical joints.
internal telescopic unit operating pressure seals extend right into top and bottom corners
achieving better acoustic rating than fixed flap seals.
heavy duty tracks and rollers allowing for tall installations up to 10 metres high.
NO FLOOR TRACK
This system can be top hung
removing the need of a floor track
Economic and
The Visioplan range of folding walls provide economic and versatile
solutions to your space division needs, where the ease of
operation of a concertina partition combines with the appearance of a
flat movable wall. An extensive range including fire resisting versions
and options for half and fully glazed panels
The main features of the VISIOPLAN range are:
• Pass door available, in most cases, at no extra cost.
• Choice of Floor Supported or Top Hung systems.
• Convenient handle operated securing bolts.
• Versatile range of decorative finishes.
• Glazed options in timber or aluminium frames.
• Fire resisting version available.
STANDARD VISIOPLAN
Visioplan systems are normally designed to run along a shallow, surface
mounted, aluminium floor track, but where structural support is
available, the top hung version without a floor track may be used. The
low profile floor track overcomes trip hazard and dirt accumulation
problems. Floor tracks must be fixed to a horizontally level surface.
Continuously hinged from a wall jamb, single wing panels fold to one
side of the opening with a single pass door as the last panel but a
double wing system offers a central, double pass door set. Pass doors
with 'D' ring handles and cylinder locks are standard.
Each alternate panel is located and secured with a self-adjusting bolt
using a convenient removable key handle. When bunching, the panels
may be folded equally on the track centre-line or eccentrically to one
side of track.
With the exception of most economical, Type 40, each panel has
understated aluminium profiles to protect the vertical edges and
complement the range of veneers, laminate, melamine or painted
surfaces which are available. Our wide range of acoustic ratings up to
Rw 46dB cover all but the most demanding situations.
Introduction 37

Visioplan
38
Carden Park
Carden Park has been a significant Cheshire Estate since the 17th
century and its parkland makes an ideal setting for a luxurious hotel and
golf resort. The par 72, championship course, designed by Jack
Nicklaus, is served by a superb new clubhouse, catering for the variety
of corporate functions offered.
In order to optimise the flexibility of this two storey building, the
Architects wanted to use three, high quality, folding walls to divide the
first floor into four rooms which could be enlarged as necessary. The
structural support available from above varied, as did the required
stacking arrangements and the flexibility of the systems provided
ensure that the Architect was able to overcome all the design
obstacles.
Our Visioplan range of sliding-folding flat panels provided the ideal
solution. Being of composite construction, the internal acoustic
insulation was altered to match the requirements and the choice of top
hung or floor supported roller units, combined with centre-folding or
end-folding panels, meant this one product met the different conditions
at each of the locations.
In the bar area, the folding wall consisted of narrow leaf panels, which
are concealed, unobtrusively, in a deep narrow recess blending into the
end of the bar counter. In the main lounge however, a large feature
fireplace provides the opportunity to store the panels away within the
chimney breast and since these panels were top hung, centre-folding
and needed no floor track, there was no interruption to the run of carpet
through the two rooms.
It was equally important that the panels complement the interior decor.
The adjacent walls are finished with raised and fielded feature panels
and although it is not possible to fix timber mouldings to the surface of
the folding panels, a similar effect was achieved by routering a double
depth profile into the panel face. This example of lateral thinking
perfectly demonstrates how our clients benefit from our wealth of
technical expertise.
This installation made full use of the options available within the
Visioplan range and provided the perfect solution to each of the
individual challenges faced by the design team.
Glazed Visioplan
42
Glazed Visioplan
Glazed folding screens for internal use. Developed using the
successful Visioplan detailing, this refined, glazed version throws
new light on to an old subject, brightening your prospects by introducing
glass into the traditional timber framed panels or the clean, elegant
aluminium framed panels. Ideal for Day Centres, Schools and Hospitals.
TIMBER FRAME
A series of custom made, timber framed panels, which are
continuously hinged and are easy to operate.
Available either top hung or floor rolling where structural support is not
adequate to carry the weight of the panels or when bunching off-centre
of the track. Sweep seals are fitted at top and bottom of each panel
to enhance the acoustic properties.
A pass door, fitted with a D-ring handle and latch, is usually included in
the run of panels at no extra cost. The door may be located in the
centre of the opening when using a double wing system.
Finished in high density paint as standard, panels are available in a choice
of finishes, extending to veneers, laminates or melamine and may be fully
glazed with a mid-rail or half glazed in clear or obscure glass.
ALUMINIUM FRAME
These panels are assembled from extruded profiles in white lacquered
finish providing clean attractive lines.
As with the timber-framed system, panels are top hung, requiring a
floor guide only when using end-folding configuration. Panels are fitted
with integral sweep seals at top and bottom edges, and are interconnected
by butt hinges. Each alternate panel is secured at the floor
with slide bolts engaging into sockets, or the floor guide when using
end-folding stacking.
Horizontal or angled cross rails, to co-ordinate with the interior design
of the room, can be supplied and are recommended for use within taller
screens to meet safety requirements. In addition to the standard white
finished profiles and 6mm plain glazing, various alternatives can be
offered upon request. Remote stacking is also available using separate
panels on two-point suspension.
ALUMINIUM SYSTEMS
The SUNPLAN aluminium systems are manufactured to exacting
standards. The profiles have flush surfaces and can be specified with
thermal separation. The glazed panels are carried on tracks integrated into
the outer frame which may be partly or fully recessed into the floor.
APPLICATIONS
SL 35 – for patios, room dividers and unheated conservatories.
SL 45 – for applications above and shop fronts in malls.
SL 50 – for heated conservatories and swimming pools.
DESCRIPTION:
Glazed sliding folding panels consisting of flush fitting aluminium profiles,
running in either head or floor tracks with lever operated shoot bolts to
secure alternate panels.
OUTER FRAME:
Constructed using powder coated aluminium profile sections incorporating
head and sill roller guides. The sill sections may be partly or fully recessed
into the threshold.
PANEL FRAME:
Powder coated aluminium profile sections bonded together to give flush
finished surfaces at joints with glazed units ‘tuned’ into the frame using
wedges and clip-in glazing profiles on the inside to allow glass
replacement.
ROLLER SYSTEM:
(Head) - Height adjustable, four wheeled carriages designed to carry
200kg, with articulated body to evenly distribute loading, and directional
guide rollers. Rollers fitted with sealed for life bearings and coated with
toughened polyamide for quiet running.
(Floor) - Two wheeled carriages designed to carry 200kg, with flange
profiled rollers fitted with sealed for life bearings.
PANEL SEALS:
Two continuous rubber bulb seals provide insulation at hinge profiles and
the perimeter frame is fitted with additional bush strip seal.
FITTINGS:
Individual panels engaged into guide channels by means of 180° turn
handle operating aluminium locking rods to extend polyamide cones
28mm at head and sill.
LAMINATED WOOD SYSTEMS
The SUNPLAN wooden systems are ideal for internal use where a more
traditional effect is required. Also manufactured to the highest quality, the
selected timbers are processed as multi-laminar bonded strips with
additional strengthening by concealed metal inserts. The ‘furniture quality’
finish of the wood is preserved by using open pore coatings to retain the
natural character of the wood.
Foldaplan
Amodern double shell concertina folding wall which closes flat, to
fill the gap between hinged folding walls and vinyl sliding-folding
partitions with a variety of options designed to provide an alternative
solution.
The Alternative Solution
An easily operated folding wall with robust internal lever mechanism to
lock the panels absolutely flat when closed across a room, giving the
appearance of a flat smooth panelled wall without visible hinges. Top
hung with no floor guide. The leaves operate smoothly and quietly
along an aluminium overhead track. The deep section aluminium
leading edge profile incorporates a magnetic insert that combines with
a special action latch for positive closure. Once the door handle
releases the lever mechanism, the hinge system allows the bunched
leaves to fold back unobtrusively to the side of the opening. Adjustable
jamb posts mean the sides of the wall are neatly fixed without packing
or architraves. Available in a choice of finishes including veneers and
melamine with a choice of white or dark brown for the door handles.
Sound insulation ratings up to Rw 34dB.
Simple and Effective
Foldacord vinyl sliding / folding partitions provide simple and
effective everyday room dividers where value for money is
important. They are ideal for applications where the available space
has to be changed frequently without fuss.
These top hung partitions are custom made to almost any size from a
servery hatch to a dividing partition for a large sports hall, but are
equally useful in schools, religious buildings, and of course, hotels and
restaurants. The neat regular folds of the vinyl covers are equalised by
a clever internal pantograph mechanism retaining a galvanised steel rod
framework which also facilitates the easy extension of the partition
across the opening. The mechanism is governed by a limiting tape,
which prevents over-stretching. When at the side of the opening,
bunched wings are retained by matching tie back straps. Curved tracks
and switching joints allow bunched wings to be stored parallel against
side walls instead of projecting into the opening. The washable, flame
retardant vinyl covers have seams reinforced with fabric webbing, and
are available in a wide range of colours and textures. With two frame
sizes available, your choice of acoustic insulation ratings extends up to
Rw 37dB.
