Gunter ISD Adds Alert Notification System
Gunter Independent School District has signed on with SchoolMessenger, a company that provides notification services
for parental outreach, emergency broadcasts, and student attendance communications for K-12 Education. Now
parents can receive phone calls, text alerts, and emails about a range of important issues affecting their students’ safety
and academic performance.
SchoolMessenger will be used to complement the district’s existing emergency preparedness procedures and to inform
parents of upcoming school events such as statewide testing and parent meetings. The alert service from S c h o o l M e s -
senger is proven to measurably impact student safety, parental involvement, staff communications and student attendance.
Parents should expect to receive notifications from the system soon.
This system will not replace current modes of school communication. Principals and teachers are still accessible for live
visits and the district will still send home paper-based memoranda. Acquisition of the SchoolMessenger system is intended
to reinforce the district’s commitment to remain personally connected to parents. SchoolMessenger will take the
place of FlashAlert and will ultimately provide better service to our parents and faculty.
The Gunter High School Choirs are off and singing to the
start of a new school year!
Again, we have a very exciting year ahead! Right away,
this fall, we will host two new fundraisers. In September, we
will conduct a Mini Musical Camp and in October we will
hold a Motorcycle Rally. Our talented students will present
the lively, romantic and funny musical “Guys and Dolls” as
well as perform a fall concert. And to get everyone in a festive
mood, we will end the first semester with our annual
Christmas Dinner Theater.
The Select Choir will travel to the “Live Music Show Capital
of the World," Branson, MO. in the spring. This trip affords
students the opportunity to perform on a professional stage,
opening for some of the most talented people in the country!
Proceeds from our fundraisers will finance this trip.
To be considered for the competition, the Tiger Band professionally recorded three pieces of music - a march and two
concert selections. Director Justin Wallis submitted two of these recordings to the ATSSB Outstanding Performance
Series. This is an annual CD audition process intended to select the top concert band performances in the state in each
classification.
Highlighting the end of the 2009-10 school year, the Gunter Tiger Band received a Sweepstakes at its UIL performance,
meaning it received overall Division I ratings in each of their marching, concert and sight-reading performances.
Congratulations to the band for these spectacular achievements!
The band has already begun preparation for the new school year by holding practices during the last week of July.
The new school year is quickly approaching,
and it is hard to believe we
are starting a whole new school year.
R-time is a new program that GISD
will be using for students in Kindergarten
through sixth grade. R-time is a
structured program which uses random
pairing to create an environment
supporting and enhancing attainment,
positive relationships and citizenship.
Here at GISD we are working to be proactive against
bullying. We believe that teaching children how to form
Pat Autry
GMS Principal
Welcome to 2010 – 2011 school year
at Gunter Middle School! Whether you
are a returning Tiger or are new with
us, I know it’s going to be a GREAT
year!
I hope you will all join me in achieving
some basic goals: be safe, give and
get respect, and do your best in the
classroom.
It's a busy time getting everyone in
the right place to get started. But here
are a few items of helpful information.
5th grade “Meet the Teacher” night is Thursday, August
19 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. It is come and go. You may wish to
bring school supplies because student names will be on their
lockers that night.
Middle school times are from 7:55 am to 3:28 pm. Students
are tardy when they are not in their class at 7:55.
Reminder: all textbooks must be covered. However,
"stretchy" book covers are no longer allowed because they
often break the spine and the corners of the textbooks. We
will supply paper covers here at school.
Reminder concerning dress code: please remember to
check the dress code when purchasing school clothes. Notice
that pants or bottoms "must be solid color."
Important info concerning drop off and pick up of middle
school students. The buses are the only vehicles allowed to
use the front entrance during the morning and afternoon. All
other drop off and pick up must be done in the "baseball park-
Elementary School R-time
Middle School Information
positive relationships will prevent bullying in our school
district.
Most of the program is focused on good manners, cooperation
and respect. R-time is a once a week lesson
that will be conducted in the classroom. Children are
placed in random pairs, and complete a lesson working
with their partner. All of the tasks are easily achievable so
there is an element of success with each lesson.
Each classroom teacher has been trained and we will
start the year off with R-time. We are all working together
to make sure that all of GISD is a safe place for all of our
students. It is going to be a great year!
ing lot" at the east end of the middle school.
The middle school open house will be September 7th from
6 – 7:30 pm We hope all the parents will join us to visit with
the teachers and have some refreshments.
If your child must be absent from school, please remember
to send a note to the school within two days of their return.
It is also helpful if you call the school the morning of their
absence to let us know not to expect them.
Please see the student handbook for the list of absences
that may be excused. If your absence is not on the list but is a
"planned absence," please use prior approval. More info on
"prior approval" is also in the student handbook.
As you can imagine, cell phones in class have become a
bigger and bigger problem each year. Please help us keep
instruction and learning the focus of your child’s day. If you
need to contact your child, please call the office. Just like in
"the old days," we'll get the message to them! If your child
becomes ill or needs to contact you for another reason, we will
allow them to use the student phone in the office.
They must not use their phone to call or text. State law
(TEC Section 37.082) allows school districts to prohibit the
use of cell phones at school. Students may bring their cell
phones, but the phone must be turned off at all times - beginning
when they enter the campus in the morning and ending
when they are dismissed from class at the end of the day.
We are all looking forward to a great year. Please don't
hesitate to contact me if I can help you in any way! Phone 903-
433-1545 or email pautry@gunterisd.org.
Welcome back, GHS students!

Summer Fun
The Gunter Tigers, an 8U coach pitch baseball team, won
the Dixie Region III World Series and the Dixie Texas State
Tournaments this summer.
The Gunter Tigers completed the regular season and district
play with an undefeated record. After winning the All-Star
district tournament in Melissa, the Tigers headed to Sulphur
Springs for the 2010 Dixie Youth AA Coach Pitch State Tournament
held July 3-7. After beating Prosper 2-of-3 in the finals,
the Tigers headed to Longview July 16-19 for the Region
III National Tournament.
The Gunter All-Star team played hard at the tournament,
beating tough competition from area states and from Texas
teams.
The Tigers played eight undefeated games to become the
2010 Dixie World Series Champions and outscored their opponents
126-23.
This is the first time in history that a team from Gunter has
Summer Hoops
The Gunter Lady Tiger basketball team went to
Texas A&M in College Station for a team camp. The
girls played 11 games and finished in the final 8.
Attending were (right) Carly Smith, Joey Bailey,
Amber Keatts, Jessica Carrigan, Jordan Arrington,
Cassidy Rand, Kaylea Johnson, Caitlyn Smith, and
home run balls for hitting it out of the park during the state
tournament. Each player was presented a commemorative
ball and case signed and presented by Texas Dixie League
State Director Bill Sanders.
Coaches for the Gunter Tigers are Josh Lowe, Kyle Rigsby,
Greg Whitteker, and Randall Denton.
The Gunter Tigers worked hard to represent our area at the
World Series. You can learn more about the team and their
