? Advisors should take a role in identifying students who are
working toward certain majors which may be inappropriate
(e.g., a student with low math test scores and poor math
preparation seeking a major in computer science or
engineering).
? Help students understand academic information which will
enable them to move into the major as efficiently and as
well prepared as possible. Academic information vital to
progress through a major includes:
? Degree requirements
? Course prerequisites
? Proper sequencing
? Advisors should be aware that students transferring to ULM
after the freshman year have as great a need for detailed
information as do freshmen.
? Advisors should also be aware of any special academic and
physical accommodations of students they advise.
III. Student Advising Responsibilities
? Learn your:
advisor’s name
office location,
location of Department, and
telephone number.
? Periodically stop by to inform your advisor about how you are
getting along. Two semester check-ins are required.
? Schedule and keep all appointments.
? If must cancel, call prior to the day of the appointment, and then
call to reschedule.
