I. Academic Advising Defined
Academic advising is a process through which advisors assist students in
developing life plans and career goals and in clarifying institutional
requirements, polices procedures, resources, and educational options. The
goal of all academic advising is assisting students to complete their
academic programs and graduate from ULM.
Academic Advising Purpose
Advising is a process that includes a collection of information, data, and a
distribution of facts regarding educational programs, courses, resources,
policies, procedures, and career options. There are several conditions that are
essential to good advising. The following is a list of five qualities:
*Quality of life issues- the advisor has a responsibility to attend to the
quality of the students experience in college.
*Models for students- the advisor should be a model for the student
especially in demonstrating behaviors that lead to self- responsibility and
self-directedness.
*Integrate Services and expertise - the advisor should seek to integrate
services and expertise of both academic and student affairs professionals.
*Utilize Resources - the advisor should seek and utilize as many campus
and community resources as possible.
*Continuous Process- academic advising is a continuous process with an
accumulation of personal contacts between advisor and student. These
contacts should have both direction and purpose.
