Current Research/Information?
At University of California at Berkeley they have a Parent=s Network with
recommendations for therapists, counseling, and support groups on their website with
links, names, and numbers.
Other colleges have singles groups for students and alumni to meet. Most, also offer
support groups for divorce (children of divorce and divorcees), and sexual assault
victims. Many colleges offered grief groups, substance abuse groups, eating disorders,
and men only groups, so these problems seem to be extremely common on campuses.
Medical services and dieticians were housed at many campuses together, under a
common heading of Awellness centers.@ Many colleges offer more medical services to
their students, like allergy shots and have extended hours.
What can we do?
These sections do not need to be skipped in our FRYS classes. We also address these
issues very well when our clients complete intake forms. We need more workshops and
seminars in these areas, and need to offer extra incentives for our students to participate.
We can partner with the Counseling Center and the Activity Center to provide these
services. These workshops should not be the major area of CASS unless it is on an
individual basis, not in a workshop. Having counseling, medical, and all other wellness
entities together at one place with longer service hours for student convenience, will
show a greater respect to our students to let them know these services are greatly needed
and we (the University) care about their needs.
Promoting Out-Of-Class Interaction:
What are we doing?
FRYS promotes out-of-class interaction in the following ways:
!Requires community service
!Requires interviewing an instructor
!Requires a campus event of student=s choice
!Requires True Colors activity
!Requires a campus scavenger hunt
!Encourages workshops, clubs, fraternities, and use of campus facilities.
Undeclared students are able to Ajob shadow@ at a variety of companies and offices to
promote increased awareness of his/her possible career.
Students that are undeclared are encouraged to talk to professors in the departments that
they are interested in changing their majors to.
