ACTION PLAN GOAL 4: Increase retention of first-time African-American, Fall 2003 students from 60.1 percent to 61.1 percent. KEY STRATEGY A: Develop programs of interest that extend beyond the traditional February African American History Month by reinstating the organization S.T.A.A.R.T. (Strategies Targeting African-American Retention and Transition). Description/Explanation: Reinstate the organization S.T.A.A.R.T (Strategies Targeting African-American Retention and Transition). This organization will conduct activities like Lectures on African-American History, Discussion Forums relating to AIDS/HIV, Cultural Awareness Month, ULM Theater presentation of African- American plays, and ULM Choir performances of Gospel Concerts. The purpose of this strategy is to extend the programs and events relating to African-American culture throughout the academic year rather than the university’s primary focus on Black History Month in February. In order to change the university culture, ULM needs to re-establish the S.T.A.A.R.T. organization and have the help of the NAACP to educate the awareness of African-American History to all students.
