Mainau Island’s recent history
Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden acquired Mainau Island in 1853.
His great-grandson, Count Lennart Bernadotte (†2004) took over
the island in 1932. He married Countess Sonja Bernadotte (†2008)
in 1972. They turned Mainau Island into a flower paradise and
the largest tourist attraction at Lake Constance. In 1974, they put
the island under the control of Mainau GmbH, whose shareholder
is the Lennart-Bernadotte-Foundation. The Bernadotte’s eldest
daughter, Countess Bettina, has managed Mainau GmbH since
2007 and her brother Count Björn is manager of the Lennart-
Bernadotte-Foundation. The present-day Bernadotte generation
strive to carry on the philosophy, valid since 1932, of providing a
renewed oasis of natural beauty, harmony and relaxation for visitors
from all over the world to enjoy.
The Mainau Flower Year 2011
We invite you on a trip down memory lane with our theme
‘Grandfather’s garden bench – memories of bygone times’. Rural-romantic
scenes, long forgotten plants and old customs bring
back childhood memories and memories of the gardens where our
parents or grandparents played.
Admire one of Germany’s largest orchid shows in the Palm House
at the start of the flower season. Thousands of tulips and narcissi,
the harbingers of spring, flower early along the spring avenues on
the island. Choose the most beautiful rose in summer and the most
beautiful dahlia in autumn. The colours and shapes of the flowers,
trees and shrubs are magnificent throughout all the seasons.
Attractions
Glittering events like the ‘Count’s Island Festival’ and the ‘Count’s
Castle Festival’, and many others like the Swedish Midsummer
Festival and the Lucia Festival, are very popular with our visitors.
The newly opened herbaceous garden offers a place to unwind and
relax. Admire the luxuriant flower beds as they change throughout
the seasons. No matter what the weather, our Palm House with its
exotic hemp and date palms and our Butterfly House with more than
40 species of colourful butterfly are always worth a visit. There’s
lots of fun for small adventurers at Mainau Children’s Land or at
the farm with a petting zoo and pony rides. Listen to talking plants
in the enchanted garden or romp around and play at the theme playgrounds
‘Water World’ and ‘Blumi’s Lakeside World’.
Celebrating in a stylish ambience
Mainau gastronomy has been in existence for over 65 years. The
gastronomic offer ranges from snacks and afternoon coffee to
festive menus in a stylish ambience. Enjoy local specialities served
in the historic vaults of the Comturey-Keller and on its terraces
under palms with a spectacular view of Lake Constance. Coffee
and cake specialities are served in the tropical ambience of the
Palm House. The Schwedenschenke, Mainau gastronomy’s flagship,
was refurbished in the style of a Swedish county restaurant in
2010 and serves a creative mixture of Swedish and local specialities
for your culinary enjoyment – Pytt i Panna and Köttbuller meet
‘badisch’ flädle soup and Lake Constance wine. We look forward
