Welcome, visitors to St Pauli,
Congratulations! You have made a wise
choice. The decision to get to know St Pauli
better is one I definitely applaud. You too will
soon discover that St Pauli is the heart of
Hamburg, a wild heart and one you certainly
won‘t forget too soon.
At one time, St Pauli lay on the outskirts of
Hamburg, and for years the people who lived Corny Littmann
here were not wanted in the city – the sick,
the street-walkers, the street performers, all of whom found
a home here and were able to live freedom of religion. The
wonderful free of spirit that rules in this unique quarter today
evolved from that history. Tolerance and creativity are palpable
everywhere you go. On the Reeperbahn, in the pubs, bars and
clubs, but also in the theatres and on the stages of St Pauli. The
people who live here are the people who believe in the motto
‘live and let live‘.
St Pauli is like life itself. It‘s full of emotion and variety, but
above all else it is life in its purest form. Life is a stage, and
every night on the stage of the St Pauli Theater, the city‘s oldest
privately-owned theatre and one of the oldest in all of Germany,
stories of life come alive. Local matadors, like Stefan Gwildis,
sing about St Pauli, some of Germany’s foremost actors and
actresses such as Monica Bleibtreu, Julia Jentsch and Ben
Becker, bring classic plays and new productions to the stage.
Experience great emotions! There’s plenty to laugh about at
the Quatsch Comedy Club and the Kiez musical Heisse Ecke
at Schmidt Theater is highly entertaining. But perhaps you’ve
dreamt of going to New York and feeling like 17 again – then musical
comedy with music by Udo Jürgens at the Operettenhaus
is for you. Meet celebrities past and present at the Panoptikum
Wax Museum. Dance the night away at clubs with live music,
sing your heart out at concerts on the Kiez, be it the annual
Reeperbahn Festival or in one of the legendary music clubs on
Grosse Freiheit where the Beatles got their big break.
This brochure is designed to help you choose. Walking tours,
top stores, lovely hotels and great restaurants. See for yourself
how diverse and attractive St Pauli is, and have fun doing it!
Yours, Corny Littmann
Managing Director Schmidt TIVOLI, President St Pauli Football Club
Don‘t walk on by!
You‘ll never walk alone
St Pauli iS more than juSt a
neighbourhood, it‘S a way of
life, full of heart and Soul,
and SynonymouS with love,
freedom and tolerance.
St Pauli Football Club player Benjamin Adrion once expressed
his strong sentiment for St Pauli as follows: “I can‘t imagine
living anywhere else. You can be yourself in St Pauli, no heads
turn when you walk by. St Pauli is real-life tolerance“. An unusual
statement in today‘s pro football world where players are
nomads gravitating to the clubs paying the highest amount.
But the majority of St Pauli FC players identify with the club,
the difference being that not only do they (currently) play great
second division football, nowhere else are victories celebrated
the way they are at Millerntor when FC St Pauli wins. This club‘s
fans are the best and most loyal in the football scene and are
even referred to sometimes as fashion pacesetters.
Their trademark – the skull
and cross bones – has made
its mark on fashion and being
politically left is considered
almost proper. Nonetheless,
xenophobia is not a problem
at the Millerntor Stadium,
and if it does raise its ugly
head, the fans take care of
it themselves.
Tolerance is a fact of life in St Pauli except when it is endangered.
That is how the people who live in this neighbourhood
feel. How else could they otherwise put up with the crowds of
pleasure-seekers trekking up and down the Reeperbahn night
after night? St Pauli is home to the underdogs, low-income
people, the old and the jobless, transvestites and prostitutes,
students and immigrants. Yet this neighbourhood is in the process
of changing and is drawing a growing number of movers
and shakers from the advertising and media scene.
Whilst still a must for those in search of love on the go, the
‘sinful mile‘ long ago became a hotspot for the party generation
and with its countless clubs and bars has catapulted itself
into Germany‘s top league for a night
out on the town. Wild stag parties, sailors
on shore leave, managers rewarding
their clients with a night out on the Kiez
and those who get smashed for the first
time: dance until dawn in one of the bars
at Hamburger Berg or Hans-Albers-Platz.
Those who go home alone after a night
out in St Pauli have only themselves to
blame.
Love to go lurks everywhere and money
can buy the country‘s most beautiful prostitutes
– available on Herbertstrasse –,
the best table-dance shows and any
number of shops selling such an amazing
and extraordinary assortment of sex
toys that at first glance one wouldn‘t
know what to use them for.
Party until the wee hours of the
morning
Factor in culture and entertainment in St Pauli, spoken of in
common parlance as St Liederlich (meaning wanton) or St
Lustig (meaning merry). Musicals, cabaret and comedy are all
located on the east side of the Reeperbahn. For sophisticated
humor don‘t miss out on the Quatsch Comedy Club live show.
All the same, St Pauli wouldn‘t be St Pauli if football and culture
didn‘t go hand in hand. Corny Littmann is the best example
of this union: a relic of the gay scene, he is also president of
the St Pauli Football Club and owner-manager of two theatres,
Schmidts Tivoli and Schmidt Theater.
For the quieter type there are plenty of great, time-honoured
pubs around the lusty mile where women with names like
Gunda, Aniezka and Ilona serve the drinks. They are the heart
and soul of St Pauli, their freshly draughted beers a labour of
love. And they have an ear for anyone who wants to talk. You‘re
never alone in St Pauli.
If a Hamburg residents says, “I‘m on the Kiez“, the word Kiez
doesn‘t mean neighbourhood or quarter as it does in Walter- Berlin. In
Hamburg, Kiez stands for the famed red-light and Möller- legendary
nightlife district – and in Hamburg, there is only one. Park Our tour
begins at the 1 St Pauli underground Station, the perfect
departure point as the yellow U3 line, which comes from the
city centre and travels past the harbour area, stops here. The
panoramic view of the river and the ships in the port and on the
water is marvellous when the sun is shining. On descending
from the train follow the signs to the exit 2 reePerbahn. The
geile Meile, or randy road, as German pop singer Udo Lindenberg
once sang, is about 930 metres long, and now lies to our
right. During daytime, it‘s pretty quiet along the strip, but come
evening, the entire street and the quarter itself comes alive.
Thousands of people of all ages are out and about in search of
one thing only – having fun! Bright signs blink in different colours,
tempting passers-by S inside. The offerings are abundant ranging
from Operettenhaus, the 3 PanoPtiKum waX muSeum, tabledance
bars, student clubs, cabaret, techno music and, of
course, love for sale.
It wasn‘t until 1938 when the Nazis redrew the lines between
the city districts that the Reeperbahn became part of St Pauli,
and thereby part of Hamburg. The Reeperbahn derives its
name from the ropemakers or rope layers, who needed a long,
straight way in order to make ships‘ ropes. As the Reeperbahn
– or ropeway – bordered both Hamburg and Altona with gates at
either end – Millerntor and Nobistor – tradespeople settled here
who, until the barricade was lifted in 1860, were considered
undesirable in both places. Consequently, the red-light district
Paulsencame
into being. St Pauli has always been a district where mi-
platz
norities peacefully co-exist without causing much of a stir.
during the Reeperbahn Festival or, more recently, as a stage to
cheer the players of the St Pauli Football Club team who got
promoted to the Bundesliga (nation- Neuer
What‘s up on the Kiez
A jewel along the strip is the
5 davidwache, Hamburg‘s and
maybe even Germany‘s most famous
police station. Located on
the corner of Davidstrasse, the police
station was built by Hamburg‘s
foremost architect and urban planner
Kurt Schumacher. TV films
have made it famous beyond the
Hamburg city limits and it also
‘stars‘ in the TV series Grossstadtrevier.
The police station itself
and its location are perfect exam-
The noted police station Davidwache ples of tolerance in practice in St
at Spielbudenplatz
Pauli: while inside, policemen
maintain law and order, outside on
the opposite side of the street, prostitutes are plying their
trade. Live and let live.
The same principle goes for 6 herbertStraSSe which turns
off Davidstrasse about 100 metres up the street and has long
been part of the myth of St Pauli. Sex has been for sale here
since the 19th century. Herbertstrasse is protected from prying
eyes by tall doors and only men over age 18 are allowed into
the 60-metre long alleyway. Women are well-advised to keep
out, otherwise they may well be greeted with verbal abuse,
rotten eggs, buckets of cold water and/or urine. Whilst the prostitutes
flaunt their attractions in display windows, they do not
wish to be gaped at like animals in a zoo. Sex for money starts
at EUR 100 a go.
The entrance to Herbertstrasse shields ladies of the horizontal trade from prying
eyes. Only men over 18 are allowed to enter.
A world apart but just on the other side of the Davidstrasse is
the recently completed 7 bavaria Quarter. The former
brewery grounds now feature trendy coffee shops, a fancy Chinese
restaurant, expensive residential and office space. A highlight
and definitely worth visiting is the 20up Lounge, the rooftop
bar of the Empire Riverside Hotel. The view of the Hamburg
port and the Kiez from the 20th floor is spectacular, the only
drawback being that you cannot see the Herbertstrasse from
here either. Davidstrasse has changed a lot. Grunge meets
glamour. Interestingly enough, both
worlds have not run into any trouble yet.
Punters, prostitutes, business people
and families evidently co-exist quite
peacefully in this environment.
A few metres back towards the Reeperbahn,
pass Herbertstrasse and turn left
into Friedrichstrasse to reach the
8 hanS-alberS-PlatZ. Not much going
on here during the daytime but a brief
look at the ground levels of the buildings
surrounding this square is enough to
make one sense what night life is like
here. Each building is host to a restaurant
or bar, and each bar, each pub is packed Monument to Hans Albers
to the hilt on the weekend. Be it Hans-
Albers-Eck or Mary Lou‘s opposite, the crowds are loud and
merry, dancing to hits and oldies. In the midst of the square
stands a statue of the legendary Hamburg actor, Hans Albers,
sculpted by Jörg Immendorff.
Return to the Reeperbahn, turn left, cross over the road, walk
left nearly to the end and take a turn right on 9 groSSe freiheit.
At night time this street resembles a miniature reproduction
of the Reeperbahn itself. Uptown girls and downtown boys,
people of virtually every age push and shove their way down
the crowded street attracted by the now
high-class table-dance bar Dollhouse,
one of the countless discothèques or music
clubs, such as Grünspan, Kaiserkeller
or Grosse Freiheit 36, or maybe even the
last of the live sex shows in Hamburg, at
the Safari. The street derives its fame
from the 1943 movie Grosse Freiheit
No 7, starring Hans Albers and featuring
his hit song from the movie, Auf der
Reeperbahn nachts um halb eins.
Freiheit. The name Grosse Freiheit, meaning great freedom,
incidentally does not stand for moral freedom as one might
think, but actually coincides with the building of this church in
the 18th century and stands for religious freedom. Opposite
the church is Schmuckstrasse which was home to a very small
11 chinatown in the early 20th century. But that is all history
now, as on May 13, 1944, the Nazis executed the ‘Chinese
campaign‘ which led to the detention and
subsequent torture of over 100 Chinese
men in the Gestapo prison Fuhlsbüttel. A
group of these men were hauled off to the
labour camp Langer Morgen near the port
without as much as a trial. Forced labour in
the port, rubble-clearing and abusive treatment
by the guards caused the death of at
least 17 men. Today, nothing is left of Chinatown
and Schmuckstrasse is now the street
where transvestites ply their trade.
Hamburg‘s Chinatown was Back to the Grosse Freiheit. In a rear court-
in St Pauli
yard, a plaque reminds the viewer of the famous
12 Star club, no longer in existence
now. It is here as well as in neighbouring clubs like the Kaiserkeller,
Top Ten and Indra that a Liverpool rock band, more widely
known as The Beatles, and other rock stars from the Sixties,
among them Jimi Hendrix, Chubby Checker, Little Richard, Fats
Domino, launched their world-famous careers. The Beatles got
their break in Hamburg, in fact, they were stars in Hamburg long
before anybody in England really knew them. And by the way,
The Beatles performed at the Star Club in the 60s, today there‘s only a commemorative
plaque. Photo left courtesy of: K&K Center of Beat, Laufgraben 16 “Rentzel Center“,
it was a female Hamburg photographer who gave them their
famous Beatles haircut.
In recognition of their music-career roots in Hamburg, the
13 beatleS-PlatZ will soon be inaugurated at the intersection
Grosse Freiheit / Reeperbahn. Resembling an oversized record
the surface will be covered in black granite, inset with 100
strobe lights and the grooves engraved with the lyrics from
Beatles‘ songs. Construction is scheduled to begin this year.
Also soon to open in Hamburg – the Beatles-Haus, a venue
combining museum, stage and much more.
Going back towards St Pauli underground station make a worthwhile
detour into the street 14 hamburger berg. This is the
spot where the young party and in the last 10 years the pub
scene here has changed considerably. Music ranging from
punk to house, the walls are covered in wall-paper reminiscent
of the Seventies and almost every place has at least a tiny
dance floor. Party here, just like everywhere else on the Reeperbahn,
until the wee hours of the morning. That‘s what this
area has been known for for the last two hundred years. Class
and style may have altered St Pauli‘s appearance and the Reeperbahn,
but the myth of the geile Meile (randy road) lives on.
There‘s only one Kiez.
time out: 15 groSSe wallanlagen in the lower section of
the Planten un Blomen Park, are ideal for taking a breather and
relaxing. The entrance to this green oasis is just beyond the St
Travelling into the underground viaduct (where the train is above
Hamburg harbour. Ideally, this is where the walking tour begins.
And the U3 is the best line for unique views of the port. Landungsbrücken,
for passenger ships. Stop here, take in the view, have a bread
seagulls loop and fly above you. Today, the Landungsbrücken
is the tourist hub of the port; just above the Landungsbrücken
is 1 Stintfang, a wonderful platform for looking out over the
river, and accessible by a long flight of stairs behind the
underground station. A slight detour maybe, but well worth
Looking left, the 3 ricKmer ricKmerS, one of
the last great merchant sailing ships and now
length, 12.2 metres in breadth and has a draught of 6 metres.
The next stop on our walk is the 426.5-metre long 4 old elbe
tunnel, a direct underwater connection for pedestrians, bikers
and cars between St Pauli and Steinwerder
on the other side of the river
Elbe. The two tunnel sections were
built in 1907 and completed in 1911.
With its white-tiled walls the Old Elbe
Tunnel evokes a charm all on its own.
Elevators carry people and vehicles
down inside the tunnel, tunnel attend- Inside the Old Elbe Tunnel
ants direct traffic depending on the
direction desired. Pedestrians have always walked against the
traffic. In recent years the two tunnel sections have become
increasingly popular as venues for events, exhibitions, and parties,
one example being the sporting goods manufacturer Adidas
who put on a fashion show here. During the “ElbArt“, the
Old Elbe Tunnel will be used as an exhibition venue for the latest
in modern art.
After visiting the Old Elbe Tunnel stroll down the 5 Promenade
to the Fish Market along the banks of the Elbe River. At the
5 until 10 am, continue back to the younger area of the Port of
the street and 7 ParK fiction. The artificial palm trees and
the gently rolling lawn, visible long before getting there, are a
welcome invitation to relax and look around. Skateboarders,
musicians, residents and the “in crowd” hang out here to take
The St Pauli Church on Pinnasberg
is a place of quiet contemplation
and the church acts
as a social and moral authority
in this neighbourhood. Named
after St Paul and built in 1833,
the architectural style of the
church was influenced by Neo-
Classicism. Past the church
Walk back to Park Fiction, to the left of which lies the legendary
9 hafenStraSSe, the street occupied by squatters and the
scene of fierce riots and street fighting between tenants and
police between 1984 and 1990. In 1995, a number of occupied
buildings were converted into co-ops. Even today the
political resistance of those years and the creativity of the
tenants is evident in the colourful frontages. Don‘t be concerned
by a burning dustbin on the side of the road, it‘s almost
expected here.
Haubachsttraße Alsenstr.
A flight of stairs leads up from Hafenstrasse
to Bernhard-Nocht-Strasse at the
place where it intersects the Davidstrasse.
We have now reached the former
site of the Bavaria Brewery, makers of
Astra beer, now home to the 10 bavaria-
Quartier, a whole new urban area consisting
of hotels, flats, restaurants and
offices, built primarily of red brick. The
brewery was shut down in 2003, the
buildings on the premises torn down and
The skyline with the new subsequently replaced by three high-rise
Bavaria Quarter buildings buildings in 2007, the Empire Riverside
Hotel, the Astra Tower and the Atlantic-
S
Haus, thereby creating a new skyline known as the Hafenkrone
(harbour crown). Don‘t miss a trip to the roof-top 20up bar of
the Empire Riverside Hotel (20th floor) for undoubtedly the best
view of the port in town.
As you carry on walking along Bernhard-Nocht-Strasse you will
pass the 11 troPeninStitut Institute for Tropical Medicine, the
Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency and the German
Meteorological Service. The employees of these three institu-
Augustenburger Str.
tions have one of the most spectacular views of the Hamburg
port from their offices. On the left is the Public Health Authority
St Pauli, formerly the 12 hafenKranKenhauS (harbour hospital)
until it was closed in the late 1990s because it had become
too expensive to run. As a result of substantial protest a
centre comprising 20 doctor‘s offices and a health-care facility
for the homeless and needy was set up.
Cross the bridge to the Elbpark, the south end
of the Planten un Blomen Park, in existence
since 1906. Hamburg‘s tallest monument, the Sternschanze
13 biSmarcK monument, erected the same
year, depicts the former Reich Chancellor Otto
von Bismarck in a crusader‘s suit of armour.
The monument measures a total 34.3 metres
in height and weighs 625 tonnes. During the
war years 1939-1940, the base of the statue
was converted Paulsen- into a shelter with a honey-
comb of rooms offering protection for up to
650 people. For safety reasons the base of the
monument is no longer open to the public. Return
A whole new lively scene has developed
between trade fair, slaughterhouse,
Shopping between Kiez and Karo
Stroll, browSe, window-
ShoP, buy! from Small deSigner
labelS to SeX ShoPS.
Shopping on the KieZ can’t really be compared to shopping in
the city centre. No international fashion designers, no mainstream
chains. Instead, men and women will find the unusual
here, things that aren’t available downtown. Cowboys, and
those who dream of dressing like one, should head to Hundertmark
Jeans & Western Store for Stetsons, long-forgotten
Indian moccasins and St Pauli football club sweatshirts. The
store supplies rivets for jackets, spurs for boots, Indian jewellery
and chucks. Looking for ‘Happy Gummies’ or just regular
condoms? Then check out the Condomerie on Spielbudenplatz,
it’s a real experience. It also pays to shop on the side streets,
for example, Custom Ringz, a shop featuring the most unusual
jewellery on the right bank of the Elbe. Go to Sticky Jam for
refrigerator magnets, key rings and chains as well as a number
of odd souvenirs and little gifts. For
basics, such as instant soup or tissues,
the Esso petrol station is the
place to go and very unique indeed.
It is the only service station in Germany
with a bouncer.
The Western Store has been around
for over 50 years
The SchanZe has retained a degree
of the old hippie spirit even
though the nouveau riche have
started to move in. Small designer
S
Holstenstr. Holstenstr.
labels and tiny boutiques are the shopping style most preferred
here. Scandinavian style at Lillestore, brand names at Baretta
and Hardenberg. All around Susannenstrasse and the piazza
there are lots of little shopping gems worth discovering. Wohngeschwister
in a rear courtyard off Schanzenstrasse is ideal for
furniture and small gift items. For a choice selection of LPs and
CDs check out Zardoz and Burnout Records.
Save the best for last, the Karo Quarter.
Various hip designers have opened shops
on the small, but select Marktstrasse ranging
from the now nationally renowned Herr
von Eden and the award-winning dresses
of Anna Fuchs, a favourite with celebrities.
Kleidermarkt offers select second-hand
fashion. Lovers of Hamburg music of any
genre should stop at Hanseplatte on the
former slaughterhouse premises. And if
you’re out on a Saturday, make sure to go
to the flea market for furniture and clothing
with that Sixties feel. Offerings range from
trash to luxury, just like St Pauli itself. With
the exception of chain stores (definite nonos
around here), you can find just about
anything!
a rousing musical.
Every evening nine actors and actresses
Music and festivals Calender of events
The Reeperbahn has always been known for its unrivalled concentration
of music clubs and its varied music culture characterised
by the continuous development of new music trends
and performences on one of the countless stages carrying on
the tradition of legendary clubs such as the Star Club or Mojo
right up to today.
THE REEPERBAHN FESTIVAL 2008
St Pauli clubs are pruning themselves in excited expectation for the
third round of the Reeperbahn Festival. Between the sinful mile and
the Feldstrasse bunker some 150 music bands will be performing on
about 20 stages from 25 - 27 September 2008 while festival revelers
easily shuttle from one location
to the other.
One of the many clubs participating in the
Reeperbahn Festival is the Molotow
“I saw them long before
anybody had even heard
of them”! Insiders love to
boast about the bands they
have ‘discovered’ long before
they make the quantum
leap to international stardom.
The Reeperbahn Festival
provides experienced
music aficionados as well as
inexperienced newcomers
an encounter with top-class
talents.
In the style of the renowned SXSW-Festival in Austin, Texas, the
Reeperbahn Festival has committed itself to New International Music.
Instead of headline names from mainstream music the indoor
festival has opted for up-and-coming cross-genre newcomer bands
across the board. However, next to the hotly traded newcomers from
the local and international music scene several big names will be part
of the line-up. The heart of the Reeperbahn Festival, the
gathering point and the open-air location
is Spielbudenplatz, which in addition
to the live performances,
will be the site for an innovative
side programme, the Flatstock
Poster Convention. Music enthusiasts
can look forward to a brilliant
weekend on the Kiez!
25 - 27 September 2008
Tickets: 3 days: EUR 55, 2 days: EUR 38,
1 day: EUR 26 (all prices include VAT, HVV combi transportation ticket, system and
advance booking fee). Tickets available at all regular ticket agencies, online at
The Hamburg funfair Dom
time out from an everyday routine.
the hamburg dom, northern
germany’S largeSt funfair.
To some people the winter break
is over when the football season
opens and one of the two Hamburg
football teams – HSV or FC
St Pauli – resumes playing. To others,
it’s when the Dom is back
in town. The what? The Dom – a
huge funfair, stationed right in St
Oktoberfest flair at the Hamburg fun- Pauli between Millerntor Stadium
fair Dom, not in its native Munich and the Karo Quarter. Three times
a year, the Dom comes to Hamburg,
in spring, summer and winter, for four weeks each time,
dazzling the Heiligengeistfeld and bathing its surroundings in
bright colours and flashing lights. It is rightly known as the largest
funfair in the North, because a total of nine million men,
women and children visit the 1.6-km long Dom every year. The
25 rides on the fairgrounds are enough to make even the most
experienced funfair connoisseur lose his or her cool. Classics
like the popular log flume, the small rollercoaster
and the giant ferris wheel, an
all-time favourite. But the longest
queues are for the roller-coaster, the
giant octopus with its five tentacles
and 25 rota-ting gondolas attached to
each tentacle and the latest attraction,
the ‘No Limit XXL’. What on first
sight appears to be a gently swaying ride is something only
the toughest and most experienced funfair fan can stand. This
single-arm looping carousel, 54 metres high, moves at a speed
of up to 120 km/h – obviously, only steel stomachs can take
that. On a lighter note: there are great bread
rolls with fish, half-metre long fried sausages
and candy floss. An outing to the Dom is
synonymous with throwing all caloric cares to
the wind. Who can resist the temptation of
pancakes, toffee apples, biscuits, all butterrich
and finger-licking good. Horror fans will
love riding the ghost train and the ‘Psycho’,
the gleaming green house of the latter fashioned
after the eponymous Hitchcock film.
On three levels, visitors experience an earthquake
or freefall in an elevator.
The Dom always features a special attraction:
in the midst of all the action a small Crowded grounds, wild rides
world created around a specific theme. It
might be a medieval witch village, a holiday on a beach in the
Caribbean or a winter wonderland. And matching each theme
there are booths, craftsmen, performers, dancers and singers.
There’s live music almost every evening on a 60-sq m
stage, people let their hair down, dance, and relax with a caipirinha,
a mojito or simply a good old draught beer.
Spectacular fireworks give it the final touch every Friday
evening. Almost too much excitement for one visit, better to
go back twice, three times or maybe even four?
For the nostalgic – the Chair-o-Plane continues to appeal in addition to
modern fun rides
Museums and galleries Hotels
St Pauli might be the wrong place to expect high art, but the
art on display here is always unusual, exhibitions or works one
wouldn’t see in Cologne or Berlin. For example, the museum
ships CAP SAN DIEGO and RICKMER RICKMERS in the harbour
and the Panoptikum Wax Museum housing contemporary celebrities
such as Robbie Williams, Harry Potter and Madonna.
Nevertheless, lovers of new art should definitely schedule a visit
Eating out in St Pauli is a treat to the palette. Anything goes:
good traditional German fare, refined French cuisine or crossover
Euro-Asian. The choice is varied and ranges from the cultstatus
Italian Cuneo to Abendmahl with its fine selection of
wines or the architecturally appealing River Kasematten near
the Fish Market. Café au lait, caffè macchiato, cappuccino, with
cake or pastries, all serve to sweeten a walk around St Pauli.
Café Amphore offers a splendid view of the port.
Party people, get your kicks on the Kiez, but don’t restrict it to
the football matches held at the Millerntor Stadium! The Reeperbahn
is full of great bars, pubs and trendy clubs and by the very
latest Friday evening it is the place of choice to go for partying,
drinking, dancing or tuning into a live concert. No doubt everyone
will find something to suit his or her taste, be it techno or
heavy metal, friendly socialising or flirty barmaids who might
suddenly jump up on the bar and dance to the music.
Rip open!

adults only
“No admission under 18 years of age”, reads a sign in the window
of many pubs and clubs, most especially on the entrance
to Herbertstrasse. And in the case of the latter with the added
quip, “no women allowed”. There are quite a number of X-rated
clubs on and off the Reeperbahn.
Let’s talk about sex – for money. Adults over 18 will need EUR 50 to
100, extras cost more of course. At table-dance bars, it’s only look,
no touching. The rules are very strict and the dancers are the ones
who decide how far they wish to go. For example, at the Dollhouse,
renowned far beyond the borders of Hamburg for its well-toned dancers,
it is they who decide whether they leave the Dollhouse Dollars in
their panties or garter belt. The dancers’ costumes cater to virtually
any preference – cowboy, sailor, schoolgirl, biker babe and more.
Guests pay with ‘play money’. A Dollhouse Dollar costs EUR 1.50,
admission charge is EUR 10 and a table-dance show at an individual
table costs EUR 30. Here again, watch out what you order to drink,
otherwise at the end of the evening the bill might turn out to be a nasty
surprise if you’ve ordered anything other than beer. The same goes
for table-dance bars such as the Tutti Frutti on the Reeperbahn: they
may only charge EUR 10 for a beer, but cognac for example costs EUR
20 and a bottle of asti (sparkling wine) costs a juicy EUR 300. Inside,
the dancers dance as long as a song lasts; when it’s over they usually
drop their panties. Caution is advised if a dancer sits down at a guest’s
table and asks a guest to buy her a drink. You can be sure she’ll order
nothing less than asti!
Safari is a club with cult status and the last club in St Pauli featuring
a live sex show. The performers strip to the buff during brief stage
numbers such as “Phantom of the Opera”, “Cabaret“ or “Rocky Horror“;
the man and woman perform live sex on stage in front of the
audience.
There are touts outside every table-dance bar and varieté club trying to
entice customers to go in and watch the show. Some of them wear a
doorman’s uniform, others dress in normal street clothes to keep out
the cold night air. Touts are, generally speaking, older men. No reason
to be frightened off, it’s an old Hanseatic tradition and the German
word ankobern means as much as enlist, recruit.
For those who do not wish to watch but would rather retreat with their
partner to a hotel or their own flat, there are loads of shops on the
Reeperbahn offering any number of sex toys, ranging from pornos to
latex to super-size condoms, pretty little nothings and joke items. For
those who love to experiment the sky’s the limit at specialty erotica
shops like “Sexy Devil”, “Sexy Angel“ or “World of Sex“. On the other
hand, none of this is necessary in order to simply go to a decent pub
in St Pauli where you’re certain to meet a great gal or guy!
Tips and informations
In St Pauli you can live and let live. This is true of the people
who work and live there and it is true of visitors to the ‘sinful
mile’ as well.
St Pauli is a place of peaceful co-existence with yuppies and punks,
partying teenies and established St Pauli residents, tourists, theatregoers
and homeless sharing the streets, sites and venues of their
neighbourhood. No staring at people who look different or act differently
than what is considered normal. However, one thing people here
do not like at all is when snide or derogatory remarks are made about
the hookers. After all, the Kiez is their workplace and in many cases
their home. Don’t intervene in discussions or arguments. Usually it’s
only half as bad as it seems and the people involved will work it out
themselves. The people here do their own thing, so a word to the
wise: don’t meddle in other people’s affairs. Nowhere else in
Hamburg does the old saying ‘live and let live’ weigh
as heavily as it does here. And that is precisely
what makes the Kiez so special and so unique.
Haubachsttraße Alsenstr.
For further information and/or assistance please
contact the Davidwache, Germany’s most prominent
police station, located at Spielbudenplatz 31,
Tel +49 (0)40-428 65 15 10. Officially speaking,
the Davidwache is actually Police Station 15.
Useful information and tips when visiting the Kiez
» The Reeperbahn is no different
than any other place in the world.
Where there are crowds, there are
pickpockets.
» In accordance with a voluntary
commitment by kiosk and petrol
station owners, no beverages in
glass bottles are sold between 8
pm and 8 am. Don’t be surprised to
find beer in plastic bottles.
» Due to recent incidents the City of
Hamburg has felt compelled to issue
a general weapon ban for the
Kiez. The areas where this applies
are marked with yellow signs with
clearly indicated symbols. You are
well advised to leave your Swiss
knife at home or back at the hotel.
» Order drinks in clubs and bars as
listed on the beverage menu. That
avoids any misunderstandings or
discussions with the waiter when it
comes time to pay the bill.
» If a tout outside a sex club is S too
pushy, often all it takes is a friendly
“No thank you!”. These guys are
only doing their job.
