Going for the Gold…Every four years the world comes together to celebrate athletics
at its finest and become inspired by the stories of those competing in the Olympic Games. The
2012 London Olympics will see 17,000 athletes from 205 countries compete in 26 events over two
weeks.
The founder of the Modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, saw in the games an opportunity to
create a universal set of principles that could be applied to sports, and more importantly, society.
These common principles are known today as the Olympic Values.
No. 1 EXCELLENCE
“How to give the best of oneself, on the field of play and in life.”
No. 2 RESPECT
“Fair play and taking care of one’s health and the environment.”
No. 3 FRIENDSHIP
“How, through sport, to understand each other despite any differences.”
No. 4 COURAGE
“To have the ability to face any challenge and overcome any obstacle.”
No. 5 DETERMINATION
“To want something so bad, that nothing will stop you from getting it.”
No. 6 INSPIRATION
“Set an example that others will follow.”
No. 7 EQUALITY
“Everyone deserves equal opportunities, no matter who they may be.”
I am certain that as I watch the Olympic Games later this month I will be inspired and reminded
time and time again of the seven Olympic Values. Some will receive Gold, Silver, and
Bronze medals for their efforts while others will receive the satisfaction of competing and doing
their best. I can’t help but wonder if we applied the Olympic Values to society today what a wonderful
world this would be. Most of us will never become Olympic Athletes but we can still
“Go for the Gold.” We can model and instill these values in our children…for that I would give a
standing ovation!
High School News...Mr. Scott Will, Principal
Crestview High School
P A G E 3
Thomas Jefferson stated, “Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and
define you.” Jefferson was a great man of action and innovation. Failure was never final in his mind. One of the
ideas we would like our students to embrace is getting involved in their high school. There are many opportunities
through athletics, volunteering and co-curricular activities to develop skills and strengths that can benefit our
school community and individual experiences during the high school experience. Why should I be a part of it? Being part of something
gives you confidence and ownership. I have had a great deal of conversations with former students throughout the years about
what their greatest regret was during high school and without fail, many say they wish they would have been a part of a team, club or
community service group. We would like to encourage opportunities for the development of the total student. Many times being
part of a group challenges students to achieve greater academically. Please encourage your children to get involved!
Meet the Teams and Open House will once again kick-off our year at the high school. Meet the Teams will be at the stadium
on August 16 th beginning at 6:00 PM. In case of inclement weather we will move the activity to the gymnasium. After Meet
the Teams we will have our Open House where we will hand out schedules, fees can be paid, and you will have the opportunity to
meet your student’s teachers. We encourage all high school parents to take part in this night.
Freshman Transition Day will be August 22 nd and we have a full slate scheduled for our freshman. All students will report
to school on the 23 rd of August.
We will have a rolling drop-off with our busses in the mornings so it will be essential for parents dropping off students and
student drivers to be cautious when coming in and out of the parking lots. The staff and administration of CHS are excited about the
upcoming year. Our custodial crew has worked through a very hot summer to get the building prepared for the next best year in your
child’s education. Please feel free to call the high school office with any questions or concerns.
GO COUGARS!
High School Guidance Office… Mr. Alex Sharick, Dean of Students
As the dean of students I want to help both our students and their parents in their pursuit of post-high school aspirations. The best
advice that I can give both of them is - “Start early!” Contact me about any questions or concerns that you might have. You can
reach me at (419) 895-1700 or by email at sharick.alex@crestviewschools.net.
Incoming Freshman: Get involved! Students need to establish a solid GPA and do NOT accept failure as an option.
Attention Sophomores & Juniors: If students want to take either the PLAN (ACT practice test) or the PSAT (SAT practice test)
you must register as soon as school starts. There are only a limited number of these tests available and they must be paid for before
your name will be added to the list. If you are planning on going to college in Ohio you usually need to take the ACT test, so sign up
for the PLAN, and if you are going out of state you usually take the SAT. Juniors: if you want to try and qualify for the National
Merit Scholarship you must take the PSAT as a junior.
High School Office News: Any student that has not picked up their report card may stop in the office. Schedules will be
available beginning August 16, 2012 during normal school hours.
Crestview Elementary School will have a Blast-Off into a New Year on Tuesday, August 21 st from
4:30-7:00 PM. Activities will start at 4:30 PM. You may walk through the building and visit classrooms
from 6-7:00 PM. Class Rosters will be posted on Wednesday, August 15 th .
Crestview Middle School will have their Open House on Monday, August 20 th from 6-7:30 PM.
Parents and students should first report to the gym. Posting of Cougar Connection Rosters will be posted on
August 10 th and distribution of 2012-13 Class Schedules for 7 th and 8 th graders will be during Open House on
August 20 th and/or during Cougar Connections on August 22 nd .
Crestview High School will have a “Meet-the-Teams”, 6:00-7:00 PM at the football stadium with
the Open House occurring from 7-8:00 PM on Thursday, August 16 th . 2012-13 Class Schedules can be
picked up starting on August 16t th during regular school hours.

Crestview Middle School
Middle School News...Mr. Eric Yetter, Principal
A last reminder that students beginning 7 th grade in
the fall of 2012 will be required to have a Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria
and pertussis) vaccine before the start of the 2012-2013
school year.
This is a new state of Ohio vaccine requirement that
became effective in 2010. The vaccine contains protection
against pertussis, or whooping cough, a severe respiratory illness
that causes violent rapid coughing that can last for
extended periods of time. It is spread by coughing and sneezing.
An updated immunization record must be turned into
the middle school office by August 22, 2012, in order for a
student to be eligible to attend school. Any 7 th grade student
who does not have proof of this immunization by September
11, 2012, will be excluded from school until we have an
updated immunization record. For special exemptions please
refer to ORC 3313.671.
WELCOME BACK COUGARS!
I hope this finds you enjoying your summer break to its fullest. As we look forward to the
beginning of the 2012-13 school year, we will again be operating as an Excellent middle school.
For the second year running, our students and staff accomplished their goal of passing ALL of
the Ohio Achievement Assessments. We saw many of our subject area tests pass above 90%. The students of Crestview
Middle School deserve an enormous congratulation!
We will have some familiar faces in new positions to begin the year, and some new faces as well. You will
find Mrs. Markel working with 4 th , 5 th and 6 th graders as our new Title I Math instructor, and Mrs. McFarland has
made the change to 4 th grade. Mr. Heath Garrison will be joining us as our new 6 th grade Language Arts instructor,
and Mrs. Kara Bush will join the 6 th grade team as the Intervention Specialist. We wish Mrs. Brandon the very best
in her retirement!
There is a slight change this year to the beginning of our day. While there will be NO CHANGE to your
students’ bus pick-up time, we will be getting them off the busses quicker and beginning our day a little sooner. Due
to that fact, the tardy bell will ring at 7:50 am. Don’t forget the middle school will again be participating in the free
breakfast program. This allows all students the opportunity to hit the cafeteria on the way to home room and pick up
a free breakfast.
All homeroom rosters will be posted at the middle school on Friday, August 10 th . The Middle School Open
House will be held Monday, August 20, 2012. We will start in the middle school gym at 6:00 pm and dismiss to
classrooms until 7:30 pm.
We are very excited about the coming year and we look forward to seeing you all in the hallways again, but
we certainly don‘t want to wish away the summer. So, enjoy the time left and we will be hard at work preparing for
another year of Excellence at Crestview Middle School.
LAST REMINDER!
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 2012-13 SCHOOL YEAR!
If your child has not updated their immunization
records we encourage parents to contact your personal physician,
the Ashland County Health Department (419-282-4317)
or the Mansfield-Ontario-Richland County Health Department
(419-774-4540) to set up an appointment or get the times of
clinic hours.
The Crestview Middle School office will be open
Monday—Thursday, 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM and on Friday 7:00
AM to 11:00 AM beginning on August 1 st through the 17 th .
You may also drop off your child’s updated immunization record
at the Crestview Board of Education office. Their summer
office hours are Monday-Thursday from 7:00 AM to 4:30
PM and on Friday 7:00 AM - 11:00 AM. All school office
hours after August 17th will be 7:30 AM—4:00 PM, Monday-
Friday.

Elementary News...Mr. Chad Lemon, Principal
Crestview Elementary School
I hope you are enjoying the summer months. I want to say “Welcome” to our new students and
their families joining us this fall, especially our new Kindergarteners. I look forward to introducing
you to some of the new members of our excellent elementary team, and a few returning staff members
in new roles!
P A G E 5
We will kick off our new school year with an Open House from 4:30-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21 st . Classrooms
will be open from 6:00-7:00 p.m. for families to visit and drop off materials. Parents are also invited to visit
on the morning of the first day of school to see the day get underway. Family activities on the first day will conclude
with our annual parade which begins at approximately 10:00 a.m.
Phone extensions for the district have changed. The new extension for the elementary is 16000. All elementary
extensions will begin with “16” instead of “1”. Callers may still dial 1 when dialing the district at 419-895-1700 to
reach the elementary.
Classes will begin for all elementary students at 7:50 a.m. for the 2012-2013 school year. This will reduce
the amount of time students are held on the bus after arriving on campus, increase available time for instruction, and
should decrease disciplinary incidences occurring on the bus.
Bus routes should not be dramatically affected. Dismissal time will remain unchanged at
2:45 p.m. The rear entrance of the building will be open from 7:35-7:50 a.m. for students who
are arriving by car. Students arriving after 7:50 a.m. will be considered tardy.
As we head into the final days of summer vacation, I want to encourage families to begin
to set aside a few minutes a day to read or review math skills. Any time you can spend on
these skills will help your child transition more smoothly back into the school year.
Football Fever Program at the Crestview Branch Library
Come support the Crestview Cougar Football team at the Crestview Branch
in anytime between 3:00-7:00 PM for face painting, sign making, football
crafts and activities. No sign up required.
Transportation News
Bus Requests
Parents Note!
Many of our buses are
quickly reaching capacity in terms
of the legal limit of students that
can be transported. In the past,
we have tried to accommodate
bus change requests particularly
at the elementary school for lastminute
(the day of) baby-sitting
arrangements. We may not be
able to honor these requests
because of overcrowding. The
following information is policy as
stated in the bus handbook:
If a student is to be picked up
or dropped off at a regular babysitter
during the entire school
year, parents must provide this
information to the transportation
supervisor prior to August 15 th .
Should changes in the baby-sitter
be necessary during the school
year, parents must notify the
transportation supervisor one (1)
week prior to the change. Any
changes, however, will depend
upon these reasons: bus population,
location of pick-up and dropoff,
and length of route.
Students are not permitted to
ride on a bus other than their
regular bus either AM or PM
except in an emergency. Emergency
changes may only be made
with the principal’s or transportation
supervisor’s permission.
An emergency IS NOT: Last
minute baby-sitting arrangements
or changes, slumber-birthdayafter
school parties, overnight
stays and evening activities
involving school, community or
church. We would ask your support
regarding this matter. The
safety of each and every student is
by far most important.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Search For Students With Disabilities
Crestview Local Schools are participating in an effort
to identify, locate, and evaluate all children who may
have disabilities. Crestview Local Schools have
responded vigorously to federal and state mandates
requiring the provision of a free appropriate public
education regardless of a child’s disability. But before
we can serve children, they must be found. All information
regarding testing or identification of children
with disabilities will be held in strict confidence and
released to others only with parent permission or as
allowed by law. District policies and procedures for
special education are available in all district offices.
Crestview Local Schools are interested in meeting the
needs of children with disabilities. If you have or
know of a child who may have a disability, contact
any school office for more information or help.
Parents Right to Know Teacher Qualifications
You have the right to know about the teaching
qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher. The
federal law, No Child Left Behind, requires that any
local school district receiving Federal Title I, Improving
the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged,
must notify parents of each student attending any
school receiving Title I that they may request
information regarding the professional qualifications
of the student’s classroom teacher, including the
following:
1. Whether the teacher has met the Ohio teacher
licensing criteria for the grade level and subject
areas in which the teacher provides your child
instruction.
2. Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency
or temporary status that waives State licensing
requirements.
3. The college degree major of the teacher and any
other graduate degree or certification (such as
National Board Certification).
4. Whether your child is provided services by
instructional paraprofessionals (sometimes called
teacher aides) and their qualifications.
5. You may request this information by a written
request to: Crestview Local Schools, 1575 State
Route 96, Ashland, Ohio 44805. You may fax
your request at 419-895-1733. The following
information must be on the request: Child’s Full
Name, Parent/Guardian Full Name, Address,
Elementary Lunch Price Increase
Due to requirements in the Healthy,
Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, we
will be raising the price of an Elementary
lunch from $2.30 to $2.35 and the
Middle & High Schools from $2.50 to
$2.55 for the 2012-2013 school year.
EZpay – Last year, many parents
took advantage of paying for school
fees and lunches by using EZpay, our
on-line payment system. All you need
is your student’s 6-digit ID number,
click on the EZpay link on the
C r e s t v i e w w e b s i t e a t
(www.crestviewschools.net) and you
can set up an account. Even if you
don’t pay for lunches or school fees
using EZpay, you can still set up an
EZpay account to view your student’s
lunch account balance or view their
lunch history. You can obtain your
student’s 6-digit ID number by contacting
the Food Service department at
419-895-1700, ext. 5002 or by calling
the secretary in your student’s building.
NOTE: There is a convenience
charge of $2.00 each time you use the
EZpay system to make a payment.
Charging Lunches – Our guidelines
for lunch charges will remain the
same. Only a complete lunch may be
charged – no ala carte items may be
charged. Students in the Elementary
are allowed three charges; Middle
School two charges; and High School
one charge. When a charge is paid, a
student is then eligible to charge
again.
Free & Reduced Meals – Free and
Reduced applications will be sent
home with your children on the first
day of school. They should be available
on the school web site in early
August. If you are direct certified,
you will receive a letter from the Food
