peace symbol and urban pest
knows pigeons, but nobody knows anything
about them. Actually, pigeons have unique biological
characteristics: they have rendered remarkable services to
humans, and they have wisely chosen our cities as their habitat.
“Doves and Pigeons” intends to highlight and make us understand
aspects of a pigeon’s life.
DOVES AND PIGEONS
peace symbol and urban pest
Where you see doves, there’s peace and freedom, sanctity and love, Schlaraffia and Home
Sweet Home, the rooftops of old towns and the concrete waste of new cities. Pigeons
are our oldest poultry, and ever since they were domesticated, people couldn’t keep their
hands off them. Hundreds of man-bred strains reflect human desires, dreams and obsessions
across six millennia. Pigeon history is human history, and it shows our own development from
a particular angle – the bird’s-eye view.
The 50-minute documentary demonstrates not just the abundance of varieties and specific
behaviours of this very interesting species, but also discusses the many aspects of the relationship
between humans and animals.
It tells how messenger pigeons were successfully deployed in the two world wars, talks of the
doping of racing pigeons at international competitions, analyses their extraordinary powers
of orientation and navigation, and explains why pigeons have been able to thrive in all civilisations
because of their modest needs and adaptability.
Open season on pigeons: known as “rats of the air”, they are perceived as an urban problem.
They carry diseases, and they cause considerable damage to buildings. And yet there are
countless pigeon lovers who continue to feed them in the teeth of bans and prohibitions. And
after all: what would St. Mark’s Square in Venice be without pigeons?
“Doves and Pigeons” shows all these aspects and more, set in an audience-friendly storyline:
it shows how two rock doves meet, make love, breed their young and find back to their nest
after flying for miles in search of food.
By identifying with the two pigeons, the audience can understand the full implications of
pigeons as a singular natural as well as cultural phenomenon. Emotions alternate with pertinent
information to form an exciting as well as touching.
