M. CHERIF BASSIOUNI<br />

Nominated for <strong>the</strong> Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 for his work in international<br />

criminal justice and for his contributions to <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

International Criminal Court, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Bassiouni has held numerous U.N.<br />

Positions between 1975 and 2011. He has been a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> law for over<br />

45 years.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> his career he has authored 24 books, 262 law review articles<br />

and edited 42 books on International Criminal Law, Comparative Criminal<br />

Law, Human Rights and U.S. Criminal Law, which have been published in 4<br />

and translated into 11 languages. Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se texts have been cited by<br />

international and national courts, including <strong>the</strong> International Court <strong>of</strong> Justice,<br />

<strong>the</strong> International Criminal Tribunal for <strong>the</strong> Former Yugoslavia, <strong>the</strong><br />

International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, <strong>the</strong> Extraordinary Chambers in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Courts <strong>of</strong> Cambodia, <strong>the</strong> European Court <strong>of</strong> Human Rights, as well as<br />

<strong>the</strong> supreme courts <strong>of</strong> Australia, Canada, Israel, South Africa, <strong>the</strong> United<br />

States and <strong>the</strong> United Kingdom.<br />

He has received eleven medals from Austria, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> United States as well as six honorary degrees from universities in<br />

Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, and <strong>the</strong> United States.<br />

The United Nations positions he held include: Chairman and <strong>the</strong>n Member,<br />

<strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inquiry</strong> for Libya, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> Expert on Human Rights<br />

in Afghanistan, <strong>Independent</strong> Expert on Victim Compensation, Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Drafting Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diplomatic Conference on <strong>the</strong> Establishment<br />

<strong>of</strong> an International Criminal Court, Vice-Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General<br />

Assembly’s Ad Hoc and Preparatory Committees on <strong>the</strong> Establishment <strong>of</strong> an<br />

International Criminal Court, Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Security Council’s<br />

<strong>Commission</strong> to Investigate Violations <strong>of</strong> International Humanitarian Law in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Former Yugoslavia and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Commission</strong>’s Special Rapporteur on<br />

Ga<strong>the</strong>ring and Analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Facts.<br />

He served as distinguished Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Law, DePaul University College <strong>of</strong><br />

Law from 1964-2009, and Emeritus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor since 2009, President and<br />

Emeritus President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Human Rights Law Institute,<br />

President and Dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Institute <strong>of</strong> Higher Studies in<br />

Criminal Sciences, <strong>the</strong> President and Honorary President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Penal Law, a Non-resident Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Criminal Law at <strong>the</strong><br />
