<strong>Report</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inquiry</strong><br />

no loss <strong>of</strong> consciousness. An injury to his right elbow caused pain and<br />

swelling for about one week. His knees hit <strong>the</strong> ground during <strong>the</strong> beatings,<br />

causing pain and swelling to his knees. He was beaten with a hose, which<br />

left marks on his back, and kicked in his face, which caused swelling in his<br />

cheeks for four or five days. He was handcuffed with plastic cuffs behind<br />

his back. He was not given medical care for his injuries.<br />

Following his arrest, <strong>the</strong> detainee was held at a police station for 45 days.<br />

He was beaten daily with hoses, belts and wooden sticks, with <strong>the</strong> first 15<br />

days being <strong>the</strong> worst period. He was fed three meals per day and allowed to<br />

use <strong>the</strong> toilet. He was threatened with electric shocks and with <strong>the</strong> raping <strong>of</strong><br />

his sisters. He signed a confession that he was not able to read. He was<br />

woken up at night and forced to chant to <strong>the</strong> King. He was accused <strong>of</strong><br />

“murder” and “unlawful assembly”. Masked investigators beat him and took<br />

photographs <strong>of</strong> him, which were given <strong>the</strong> heading “Charges Rising”. He<br />

also experienced <strong>the</strong> air conditioning turned ei<strong>the</strong>r cold or hot on high. He<br />

was beaten again on <strong>the</strong> way to his trial. During this time, he “lived in fear”<br />

and was “constantly threatened”.<br />

The detainee was transferred to Dry Dock Detention Centre, blindfolded and<br />

handcuffed. Upon arrival, he was kicked out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bus and fell on <strong>the</strong><br />

ground. His clo<strong>the</strong>s were torn and his skin was red and bruised. The<br />

detainees were lined up against <strong>the</strong> wall and every so <strong>of</strong>ten two policemen<br />

would choose a few inmates for beating. The detainee was beaten with<br />

hoses several times. He was also slapped when travelling back and forth<br />

between police stations.<br />

Subsequently, <strong>the</strong> detainee was transferred to Juw Prison where he was<br />

detained at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> this interview. There, he was regularly beaten and<br />

slapped, in particular after family visits, and consequently he told his family<br />

not to visit. The detainee suffered initial pain, bruises and swelling from <strong>the</strong><br />

beatings, as well as dizziness and recurrent bleeding following <strong>the</strong> head<br />

injury. His treatment in Juw Prison improved after <strong>the</strong> <strong>Commission</strong><br />

commenced its investigations.<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 25 August 2011<br />

Statement: On 18 February 2011, <strong>the</strong> detainee was attending a peaceful<br />

protest at <strong>the</strong> GCC Roundabout. The army was present and started shooting<br />

at protesters. A person standing next to <strong>the</strong> detainee was shot and killed, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> detainee was <strong>the</strong>n shot in <strong>the</strong> chest. An ambulance came to take him to<br />

SMC, at which point he lost consciousness. He underwent emergency<br />

surgery and awoke at approximately 21:00. There were tubes coming out <strong>of</strong><br />

his chest and he required blood transfusions and a total <strong>of</strong> three surgeries for<br />

his injuries.<br />
