<strong>Report</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Bahrain</strong> <strong>Independent</strong> <strong>Commission</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Inquiry</strong><br />

overthrow <strong>the</strong> GoB, and on number <strong>of</strong> occasions he was forced to sign<br />

documents during <strong>the</strong> interrogation.<br />

The detainee was <strong>the</strong>n taken along with o<strong>the</strong>r detainees to Building 5 <strong>of</strong> Dry<br />

Dock Detention Centre. He was taken to a place below <strong>the</strong> ground<br />

(probably <strong>the</strong> NSA building at Al-Qalaa) and <strong>the</strong>n to a clinic to examine his<br />

marks. There he was physically assaulted and threatened with sexual<br />

assault. This continued for about two days but he did not sign any fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

documents. He was beaten by a number <strong>of</strong> individuals with a hose. He also<br />

complains about incidents <strong>of</strong> sexual abuse. On 17 or 18 April, he was<br />

returned to Dry Dock where he was interrogated with o<strong>the</strong>r detainees and<br />

photographed and videotaped. He was <strong>the</strong>n taken to interrogations with <strong>the</strong><br />

military in an unknown building where <strong>the</strong> allegations against him were<br />

repeated. His first telephone call to his family was on 1 August.<br />

Date <strong>of</strong> statement: 27 August 2011<br />

Statement: The detainee was arrested by military forces at SMC on his way<br />

out <strong>of</strong> work on 17 March 2011. They transferred him to persons wearing<br />

civilian clothing who were accompanied by police. His CPR, passport,<br />

wallet, glasses and keys were confiscated. He was told that <strong>the</strong>se were<br />

“spoils <strong>of</strong> war” so he would not see <strong>the</strong>m again. Only his glasses were<br />

returned to him. He was placed in solitary confinement in a location near<br />

<strong>the</strong> hospital, and this is where <strong>the</strong> beatings began. On 18 March, he was<br />

interrogated and beaten in what he believes was a military air base by men in<br />

military uniform. He still bears marks on his left leg from <strong>the</strong> strikes. He<br />

stayed at that location for about 10 days with no access to a lawyer or<br />

contact with his family.<br />

The detainee was <strong>the</strong>n transferred to an isolated cell in prison. Masked<br />

military personnel who were all <strong>Bahrain</strong>is interrogated him regularly for two<br />

and half months. They physically abused him. During one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

interrogations, <strong>the</strong>y brought in barking dogs. During ano<strong>the</strong>r session, an<br />

individual began threatening him and insulting his dignity until he signed a<br />

confession to crimes he did not commit.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> March, he was taken to <strong>the</strong> CID and remained <strong>the</strong>re for about<br />

two weeks. There he was tortured and was not allowed to sit except for<br />

short periods. He was deprived <strong>of</strong> sleep and threatened with sexual assault,<br />

and <strong>of</strong>ficials would frequently place <strong>the</strong>ir hands on sensitive areas. He had<br />

four interrogations and was forced to sign documents on each occasion.<br />

They threatened him with torture until he confessed to <strong>the</strong> allegation that he<br />

had been in contact with <strong>the</strong> Iranian authorities and had called for <strong>the</strong><br />

overthrow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GoB. During <strong>the</strong>se sessions, he was repeatedly beaten with<br />

a hose.<br />
